A variant of the Erdos-Renyi random graph process
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a natural variant of the Erdős-Rényi random graph process in which $k$ vertices are special and are never put into the same connected component. The model is natural and interesting on its own, but is actually inspired by the combinatorial data fusion problem that itself is connected to a number of important problems in graph theory. We will show that a phase transition occurs when the number of special vertices is roughly $n^{1/3}$, where $n$ is the number of vertices.
Space proof complexity for random 3-CNFs

We investigate the space complexity of refuting $3$-CNFs in Resolution and algebraic systems. We prove that every Polynomial Calculus with Resolution refutation of a random $3$-CNF $φ$ in $n$ variables requires, with high probability, $Ω(n)$ distinct monomials to be kept simultaneously in memory. The same construction also proves that every Resolution refutation $φ$ requires, with high probability, $Ω(n)$ clauses each of width $Ω(n)$ to be kept at the same time in memory. This gives a $Ω(n^2)$ lower bound for the total space needed in Resolution to refute $φ$. These results are best possible (up to a constant factor). The main technical innovation is a variant of Hall's Lemma. We show that in bipartite graphs $G$ with bipartition $(L,R)$ and left-degree at most 3, $L$ can be covered by certain families of disjoint paths, called VW-matchings, provided that $L$ expands in $R$ by a factor of $(2-ε)$, for $ε< 1/23$.

The stripping process can be slow: part I
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an integer k, we consider the parallel k-stripping process applied to a hypergraph H: removing all vertices with degree less than k in each iteration until reaching the k-core of H. Take H as H_r(n,m): a random r-uniform hypergraph on n vertices and m hyperedges with the uniform distribution. Fixing k,r\ge 2 with (k,r)\neq (2,2), it has previously been proved that there is a constant c_{r,k} such that for all m=cn with constant c\neq c_{r,k}, with high probability, the parallel k-stripping process takes O(\log n) iterations. In this paper we investigate the critical case when c=c_{r,k}+o(1). We show that the number of iterations that the process takes can go up to some power of n, as long as c approaches c_{r,k} sufficiently fast. A second result we show involves the depth of a non-k-core vertex v: the minimum number of steps required to delete v from H_r(n,m) where in each step one vertex with degree less than k is removed. We will prove lower and upper bounds on the maximum depth over all non-k-core vertices.
