The quadric flat torus theorem
We prove a flat torus theorem for quadric complexes. In particular, we show that if a non-cyclic free abelian group $G$ acts metrically properly on a quadric complex $X$, then $G \cong \mathbb{Z}^2$ and $X$ contains a $G$-invariant isometric copy of the regular square tiling of the plane. Along the way, we also give a complete proof of the fact that any closed surface subgroup in the fundamental group of a combinatorial 2-complex is represented by a combinatorial map from a cellulation of the surface that is locally injective away from vertices.

7-location, weak systolicity and isoperimetry
$m$-location is a local combinatorial condition for flag simplicial complexes introduced by Osajda. Osajda showed that simply connected 8-located locally 5-large complexes are hyperbolic. We treat the nonpositive curvature case of 7-located locally 5-large complexes. We show that any minimal area disc diagram in a 7-located locally 5-large complex is itself 7-located and locally 5-large. We define a natural CAT(0) metric for 7-located disc diagrams and use this to prove that simply connected 7-located locally 5-large complexes have quadratic isoperimetric function. Along the way, we prove that locally weakly systolic complexes are 7-located locally 5-large.

Shortcut Graphs and Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce shortcut graphs and groups. Shortcut graphs are graphs in which cycles cannot embed without metric distortion. Shortcut groups are groups which act properly and cocompactly on shortcut graphs. These notions unify a surprisingly broad family of graphs and groups of interest in geometric group theory and metric graph theory, including: the 1-skeletons of systolic and quadric complexes (in particular finitely presented C(6) and C(4)-T(4) small cancellation groups), 1-skeletons of finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes, hyperbolic graphs, standard Cayley graphs of finitely generated Coxeter groups and the standard Cayley graph of the Baumslag-Solitar group BS(1,2). Most of these examples satisfy a strong form of the shortcut property. The shortcut properties also have important geometric group theoretic consequences. We show that shortcut groups are finitely presented and have exponential isoperimetric and isodiametric functions. We show that groups satisfying the strong form of the shortcut property have polynomial isoperimetric and isodiametric functions.

Bisimplicial complexes and asphericity
We present a discrete Morse-theoretic method for proving that a regular CW complex is homeomorphic to a sphere. We use this method to define bisimplices, the cells of a class of regular CW complexes we call bisimplicial complexes. The 1-skeleta of bisimplices are complete bipartite graphs making them suitable in constructing higher dimensional skeleta for bipartite graphs. We show that the flag bisimplicial completion of a finite bipartite bi-dismantlable graph is collapsible. We use this to show that the flag bisimplicial completion of a quadric complex is contractible and to construct a compact K(G,1) for G a torsion-free quadric group.
