Morse Theory for the k-NN Distance Function
We study the $k$-th nearest neighbor distance function from a finite point-set in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We provide a Morse theoretic framework to analyze the sub-level set topology. In particular, we present a simple combinatorial-geometric characterization for critical points and their indices, along with detailed information about the possible changes in homology at the critical levels. We conclude by computing the expected number of critical points for a homogeneous Poisson process. Our results deliver significant insights and tools for the analysis of persistent homology in order-$k$ Delaunay mosaics, and random $k$-fold coverage.

Homological Percolation and the Euler Characteristic
Published in Phys. Rev. E 101, 032304 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the connection between the phenomenon of homological percolation (the formation of "giant" cycles in persistent homology), and the zeros of the expected Euler characteristic curve. We perform an experimental study that covers four different models: site-percolation on the cubical and permutahedral lattices, the Poisson-Boolean model, and Gaussian random fields. All the models are generated on the flat torus $T^d$, for $d=2,3,4$. The simulation results strongly indicate that the zeros of the expected Euler characteristic curve approximate the critical values for homological-percolation. Our results also provide some insight about the approximation error. Further study of this connection could have powerful implications both in the study of percolation theory, and in the field of Topological Data Analysis.

Homological Connectivity in Random Čech Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the homology of random Čech complexes generated by a homogeneous Poisson process. We focus on 'homological connectivity' - the stage where the random complex is dense enough, so that its homology "stabilizes" and becomes isomorphic to that of the underlying topological space. Our results form a comprehensive high-dimensional analogue of well-known phenomena related to connectivity in the Erdős-Rényi graph and random geometric graphs. We first prove that there is a sharp phase transition describing homological connectivity. Next, we analyze the behavior of the complex in the critical window. We show that the cycles obstructing homological connectivity have a very unique and simple shape. In addition, we prove that the process counting the last obstructions converges to a Poisson process. We make a heavy use of Morse theory, and its adaptation to distance functions. In particular, our results classify the critical points of random distance functions according to their exact effect on homology.

Random Čech Complexes on Riemannian Manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the homology of a random Cech complex generated by a homogeneous Poisson process in a compact Riemannian manifold M. In particular, we focus on the phase transition for "homological connectivity" where the homology of the complex becomes isomorphic to that of M. The results presented in this paper are an important generalization of [7], from the flat torus to general compact Riemannian manifolds. In addition to proving the statements related to homological connectivity, the methods we develop in this paper can be used as a framework for translating results for random geometric graphs and complexes from the Euclidean setting into the more general Riemannian one.

Maximally Persistent Cycles in Random Geometric Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We initiate the study of persistent homology of random geometric simplicial complexes. Our main interest is in maximally persistent cycles of degree-$k$ in persistent homology, for a either the \cech or the Vietoris--Rips filtration built on a uniform Poisson process of intensity $n$ in the unit cube $[0,1]^d$. This is a natural way of measuring the largest "$k$-dimensional hole" in a random point set. This problem is in the intersection of geometric probability and algebraic topology, and is naturally motivated by a probabilistic view of topological inference. We show that for all $d \ge 2$ and $1 \le k \le d-1$ the maximally persistent cycle has (multiplicative) persistence of order $$ Θ\left(\left(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n} \right)^{1/k} \right),$$ with high probability, characterizing its rate of growth as $n \to \infty$. The implied constants depend on $k$, $d$, and on whether we consider the Vietoris--Rips or \cech filtration.

On the Vanishing of Homology in Random Čech Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We compute the homology of random Čech complexes over a homogeneous Poisson process on the d-dimensional torus, and show that there are, coarsely, two phase transitions. The first transition is analogous to the Erdős-Rényi phase transition, where the Čech complex becomes connected. The second transition is where all the other homology groups are computed correctly (almost simultaneously). Our calculations also suggest a finer measurement of scales, where there is a further refinement to this picture and separation between different homology groups.
