Large Deviations for the Empirical Distribution in the General Branching Random Walk
We consider the general branching random walk under minimal assumptions, which in particular guarantee that the empirical particle distribution admits an almost sure central limit theorem. For such a process, we study the large time decay of the probability that the fraction of particles in a typical set deviates from its typical value. We show that such probabilities decay doubly exponentially with speed which is either linear in or the square root of the number of generations, depending on the set and the magnitude of the deviation. We also find the rate of decay in each case.

Exploring an Infinite Space with Finite Memory Scouts
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a small number of scouts exploring the infinite $d$-dimensional grid with the aim of hitting a hidden target point. Each scout is controlled by a probabilistic finite automaton that determines its movement (to a neighboring grid point) based on its current state. The scouts, that operate under a fully synchronous schedule, communicate with each other (in a way that affects their respective states) when they share the same grid point and operate independently otherwise. Our main research question is: How many scouts are required to guarantee that the target admits a finite mean hitting time? Recently, it was shown that $d + 1$ is an upper bound on the answer to this question for any dimension $d \geq 1$ and the main contribution of this paper comes in the form of proving that this bound is tight for $d \in \{ 1, 2 \}$.

Large Deviations for the Empirical Distribution in the Branching Random Walk
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the branching random walk on the real line where the underlying motion is of a simple random walk and branching is at least binary and at most decaying exponentially in law. It is well known that the normalized empirical measure converges to the Gaussian distribution for typical sets A. We therefore analyze the probability that at step n the empirical distribution differs from the Gaussian distribution by a constant ε. We show that the decay is doubly exponential in either n or \sqrt{n}, depending on the set A and ε, and we find the leading coefficient in the top exponent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such large deviation probabilities are treated in this model.
