Reconfiguration of vertex colouring and forbidden induced subgraphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 118, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
The reconfiguration graph of the $k$-colourings, denoted $\mathcal{R}_k(G)$, is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-colourings of $G$ and two colourings are adjacent in $\mathcal{R}_k(G)$ if they differ in colour on exactly one vertex. In this paper, we investigate the connectivity and diameter of $\mathcal{R}_{k+1}(G)$ for a $k$-colourable graph $G$ restricted by forbidden induced subgraphs. We show that $\mathcal{R}_{k+1}(G)$ is connected for every $k$-colourable $H$-free graph $G$ if and only if $H$ is an induced subgraph of $P_4$ or $P_3+P_1$. We also start an investigation into this problem for classes of graphs defined by two forbidden induced subgraphs. We show that if $G$ is a $k$-colourable ($2K_2$, $C_4$)-free graph, then $\mathcal{R}_{k+1}(G)$ is connected with diameter at most $4n$. Furthermore, we show that $\mathcal{R}_{k+1}(G)$ is connected for every $k$-colourable ($P_5$, $C_4$)-free graph $G$.

Mixing colourings in $2K_2$-free graphs

The reconfiguration graph for the $k$-colourings of a graph $G$, denoted $R_{k}(G)$, is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-colourings of $G$ and two colourings are joined by an edge if they differ in colour on exactly one vertex. For any $k$-colourable $P_4$-free graph $G$, Bonamy and Bousquet proved that $R_{k+1}(G)$ is connected. In this short note, we complete the classification of the connectedness of $R_{k+1}(G)$ for a $k$-colourable graph $G$ excluding a fixed path, by constructing a $7$-chromatic $2K_2$-free (and hence $P_5$-free) graph admitting a frozen $8$-colouring. This settles a question of the second author.

Recolouring weakly chordal graphs and the complement of triangle-free graphs

For a graph $G$, the $k$-recolouring graph $\mathcal{R}_k(G)$ is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-colourings of $G$ and two colourings are joined by an edge if they differ in colour on exactly one vertex. We prove that for all $n \ge 1$, there exists a $k$-colourable weakly chordal graph $G$ where $\mathcal{R}_{k+n}(G)$ is disconnected, answering an open question of Feghali and Fiala. We also show that for every $k$-colourable $3K_1$-free graph $G$, $\mathcal{R}_{k+1}(G)$ is connected with diameter at most $4|V(G)|$.

Colouring graphs with no induced six-vertex path or diamond

The diamond is the graph obtained by removing an edge from the complete graph on 4 vertices. A graph is ($P_6$, diamond)-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to a six-vertex path or a diamond. In this paper we show that the chromatic number of a ($P_6$, diamond)-free graph $G$ is no larger than the maximum of 6 and the clique number of $G$. We do this by reducing the problem to imperfect ($P_6$, diamond)-free graphs via the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem, dividing the imperfect graphs into several cases, and giving a proper colouring for each case. We also show that there is exactly one 6-vertex-critical ($P_6$, diamond, $K_6$)-free graph. Together with the Lovász theta function, this gives a polynomial time algorithm to compute the chromatic number of ($P_6$, diamond)-free graphs.

An Optimal $χ$-Bound for ($P_6$, diamond)-Free Graphs

Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph $G$ is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ or $H_2$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices and $K_t$ be the complete graph on $t$ vertices. The diamond is the graph obtained from $K_4$ by removing an edge. In this paper we show that every ($P_6$, diamond)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\le ω(G)+3$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the chromatic number and clique number of $G$, respectively. Our bound is attained by the complement of the famous 27-vertex Schläfli graph. Our result unifies previously known results on the existence of linear $χ$-binding functions for several graph classes. Our proof is based on a reduction via the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem to imperfect ($P_6$, diamond)-free graphs, a careful analysis of the structure of those graphs, and a computer search that relies on a well-known characterization of 3-colourable $(P_6,K_3)$-free graphs.
