Lattice-point generating functions for free sums of convex sets
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 120 (2013), 1246-1262 • View PublicationBIB
Let $\J$ and $\K$ be convex sets in $\R^{n}$ whose affine spans intersect at a single rational point in $\J \cap \K$, and let $\J \oplus \K = \conv(\J \cup \K)$. We give formulas for the generating function {equation*} σ_{\cone(\J \oplus \K)}(z_1,..., z_n, z_{n+1}) = \sum_{(m_1,..., m_n) \in t(\J \oplus \K) \cap \Z^{n}} z_1^{m_1}... z_n^{m_n} z_{n+1}^{t} {equation*} of lattice points in all integer dilates of $\J \oplus \K$ in terms of $σ_{\cone \J}$ and $σ_{\cone \K}$, under various conditions on $\J$ and $\K$. This work is motivated by (and recovers) a product formula of B.\ Braun for the Ehrhart series of $¶\oplus \Q$ in the case where $¶$ and $\Q$ are lattice polytopes containing the origin, one of which is reflexive. In particular, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for Braun's formula and its multivariate analogue.

Multilinear generating functions for Charlier polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Charlier configurations provide a combinatorial model for Charlier polynomials. We use this model to give a combinatorial proof of a multilinear generating function for Charlier polynomials. As special cases of the multilinear generating function, we obtain the bilinear generating function for Charlier polynomials and formulas for derangements.

A Combinatorial Analog of a Theorem of F.J.Dyson
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tucker's Lemma is a combinatorial analog of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem and the case n=2 was proposed by Tucker in 1945. Numerous generalizations and applications of the Lemma have appeared since then. In 2006 Meunier proved the Lemma in its full generality in his Ph.D. thesis. There are generalizations and extensions of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem that do not yet have combinatorial analogs. In this note, we give a combinatorial analog of a result of Freeman J. Dyson and show that our result is equivalent to Dyson's theorem. As with Tucker's Lemma, we hope that this will lead to generalizations and applications and ultimately a combinatorial analog of Yang's theorem of which both Borsuk-Ulam and Dyson are special cases.

A triple lacunary generating function for Hermite polynomials
Published in Elect. J. of Combinatorics 12(1) (2005) • View PublicationBIB
Some of the classical orthogonal polynomials such as Hermite, Laguerre, Charlier, etc. have been shown to be the generating polynomials for certain combinatorial objects. These combinatorial interpretations are used to prove new identities and generating functions involving these polynomials. In this paper we apply Foata's combinatorial interpretation of the Hermite polynomials as counting matchings of a set to obtain a triple lacunary generating function for the Hermite polynomials. We also give an umbral proof of this generating function.
