Decomposing Determinantal Varieties from Statistics via Matroid Theory
We study determinantal varieties from conditional independence models with hidden variables, focusing on their irreducible decompositions, dimensions, degrees, and Gröbner bases. Each variety encodes a collection of matroids, whose flats capture algebraic dependencies among variables. Using this approach, we provide a systematic description of the components, their dimensions, and defining equations, and introduce a combinatorial framework for computing the degree of the determinantal variety. Our approach highlights the central role of matroidal structures in the study of determinantal varieties and extends beyond the reach of current computational techniques.

Characteristic Imsets for Cyclic Linear Causal Models and the Chickering Ideal
Two directed graphs are called covariance equivalent if they induce the same set of covariance matrices, up to a Lebesgue measure zero set, on the random variables of their associated linear structural equation models. For acyclic graphs, covariance equivalence is characterized both structurally, via essential graphs and characteristic imsets, and transformationally, through sequences of covered edge flips. However, when cycles are allowed, only a transformational characterization of covariance equivalence has been discovered. We consider a linear map whose fibers correspond to the sets of graphs with identical characteristic imset vectors, and study the toric ideal associated to its integer matrix. Using properties of this ideal we show that directed graphs with the same characteristic imset vectors are covariance equivalent. In applications, imsets form a smaller search space for solving causal discovery via greedy search.
Decomposing conditional independence ideals with hidden variables
We study a family of determinantal ideals whose decompositions encode the structural zeros in conditional independence models with hidden variables. We provide explicit decompositions of these ideals and, for certain subclasses of models, we show that this is a decomposition into radical ideals by displaying Gröbner bases for the components. We identify conditions under which the components are prime, and establish formulas for the dimensions of these prime ideals. Moreover, we show that the components in the decomposition can be grouped into equivalence classes defined by their combinatorial structure, and we derive a closed formula for the number of such classes.

Homaloidal Polynomials and Gaussian Models of Maximum Likelihood Degree One
Published in Alg. Stat. 15 (2024) 167-198 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Gaussian statistical models whose log-likelihood function has a unique complex critical point, i.e., has maximum likelihood degree one. We exploit the connection developed by Améndola et. al. between the models having maximum likelihood degree one and homaloidal polynomials. We study the spanning tree generating function of a graph and show this polynomial is homaloidal when the graph is chordal. When the graph is a cycle on $n$ vertices, $n \geq 4$, we prove the polynomial is not homaloidal, and show that the maximum likelihood degree of the resulting model is the $n$th Eulerian number. These results support our conjecture that the spanning tree generating function is a homaloidal polynomial if and only if the graph is chordal. We also provide an algebraic formulation for the defining equations of these models. Using existing results, we provide a computational study on constructing new families of homaloidal polynomials. In the end, we analyze the symmetric determinantal representation of such polynomials and provide an upper bound on the size of the matrices involved.

An exponential bound for simultaneous embeddings of planar graphs
Published in Graphs Combin. 39 (2023), no. 5, Paper No. 100, 9 pp • View PublicationBIB
We show that there are $O(n \cdot 4^{n/11})$ planar graphs on $n$ vertices which do not admit a simultaneous straight-line embedding on any $n$-point set in the plane. In particular, this improves the best known bound $O(n!)$ significantly.

Causal Structure Learning in Directed, Possibly Cyclic, Graphical Models
We consider the problem of learning a directed graph $G^\star$ from observational data. We assume that the distribution which gives rise to the samples is Markov and faithful to the graph $G^\star$ and that there are no unobserved variables. We do not rely on any further assumptions regarding the graph or the distribution of the variables. Particularly, we allow for directed cycles in $G^\star$ and work in the fully non-parametric setting. Given the set of conditional independence statements satisfied by the distribution, we aim to find a directed graph which satisfies the same $d$-separation statements as $G^\star$. We propose a hybrid approach consisting of two steps. We first find a partially ordered partition of the vertices of $G^\star$ by optimizing a certain score in a greedy fashion. We prove that any optimal partition uniquely characterizes the Markov equivalence class of $G^\star$. Given an optimal partition, we propose an algorithm for constructing a graph in the Markov equivalence class of $G^\star$ whose strongly connected components correspond to the elements of the partition, and which are partially ordered according to the partial order of the partition. Our algorithm comes in two versions -- one which is provably correct and another one which performs fast in practice.
