In the present paper, we revisit the geometry of smooth plane quartics and their bitangents from several perspectives. First, we study in detail the weak combinatorics of arrangements of bitangents associated with highly symmetric quartic curves. We consider quartic curves from the point of view of the order of their automorphism groups, in order to establish a lower bound on the number of quadruple intersection points for arrangements of bitangents associated with smooth plane quartics, which are smooth members of Ciani's pencil. We then construct new examples of $3$-syzygy reduced plane curves using smooth plane quartics and their bitangents.
On the Alexander polynomials of conic-line arrangements
In the present paper we compute Alexander polynomials for certain classes of conic-line arrangements in the complex projective plane which are related to pencils. We prove two general results for curve arrangements coming from Halphen pencils of index $k\geq 2$. Then we apply them to the Hesse arrangement of conics and to some of its degenerations. The results are completed by computations using computer algebra. In particular, we construct conic-line arrangements which are non-reduced pencil-type arrangements and have as roots of their Alexander polynomials roots of unity of order 7. Such roots are not known and are conjectured not to exist in the class of line arrangements.

The aim of this paper is to provide a direct link between maximizing curves that occur in the construction of smooth algebraic surfaces having the maximal possible Picard numbers and reduced free plane curves with simple singularities. We also investigate odd degree plane curves with simple singularities having maximal total Tjurina number.

We study the geometry of $\mathcal{Q}$-conic arrangements in the complex projective plane. These are arrangements consisting of smooth conics and they admit certain quasi-homogeneous singularities. We show that such $\mathcal{Q}$-conic arrangements are never free. Moreover, we provide combinatorial constraints of the weak combinatorics of such arrangements.

In the present paper we study algebraic properties of edge ideals associated with plane curve arrangements via their Levi graphs. Using combinatorial properties of such Levi graphs we are able to describe those monomial algebras being Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum, and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We also condsider the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for these edge ideals. We provide effective lower and upper bounds on them. As a byproduct of our study we connect, in general, various Buchsbaum properties of squarefree modules.

In the present paper, we study arrangements of smooth plane conics having only nodes and tacnodes as the singularities. We provide an interesting estimation on the number of nodes and tacnodes that depends only on a linear function of the number of conics. Based on that result, we obtain a new upper bound on the number of tacnodes which turns out to be better than Miyaoka's bound for a large enough number of conics. We also study the freeness and nearly freeness of such arrangements providing a detailed description.
Unexpected properties of the Klein configuration of $60$ points in ${\mathbb P}^3$

Felix Klein in course of his study of the regular icosahedron and its symmetries encountered a highly symmetric configuration of $60$ points in ${\mathbb P}^3$. This configuration has appeared in various guises, perhaps post notably as the configuration of points dual to the $60$ reflection planes in the group $G_{31}$ in the Shephard-Todd list.
In the present note we show that the $60$ points exhibit interesting properties relevant from the point of view of two paths of research initiated recently. Firstly, they give rise to two completely different unexpected surfaces of degree $6$. Unexpected hypersurfaces have been introduced by Cook II, Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel in 2018. One of unexpected surfaces associated to the configuration of $60$ points is a cone with a single singularity of multiplicity $6$ and the other has three singular points of multiplicities $4,2$ and $2$. Secondly, Chiantini and Migliore observed in 2020 that there are non-trivial sets of points in ${\mathbb P}^3$ with the surprising property that their general projection to ${\mathbb P}^2$ is a complete intersection. They found a family of such sets, which they called grids. An appendix to their paper describes an exotic configuration of $24$ points in ${\mathbb P}^3$ which is not a grid but has the remarkable property that its general projection is a complete intersection. We show that the Klein configuration is also not a grid and it projects to a complete intersections. We identify also its proper subsets, which enjoy the same property. \

The main goal of this note is to begin a systematic study on conic-line arrangements in the complex projective plane. We show a de Bruijn-Erdős-type inequality and Hirzebruch-type inequality for a certain class of conic-line arrangements having ordinary singularities. We will also study, in detail, certain conic-line arrangements in the context of the geography of log-surfaces and free divisors in the sense of Saito.

The main purpose of this survey is to provide an introduction, algebro-topological in nature, to Hirzebuch-type inequalities for plane curve arrangements in the complex projective plane. These inequalities gain more and more interest due to their utility in many combinatorial problems related to point or line arrangements in the plane. We would like to present a summary of the technicalities and also some recent applications, for instance in the context of the Weak Dirac Conjecture. We also advertise some open problems and questions.

In the present note, we focus on certain properties of special curves that might be used in the theory of multi-point Seshadri constants for ample line bundles on the complex projective plane. In particular, we provide three Ein-Lazarsfeld-Xu-type lemmas for plane curves and a lower bound on the multi-point Seshadri constant of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{2}}(1)$ under the assumption that the chosen points are not very general. In the second part, we focus on certain arrangements of points in the plane which are given by line arrangements. We show that in some cases the multi-point Seshadri constants of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{2}}(1)$ centered at singular loci of line arrangements are computed by lines from the arrangement having some extremal properties.

In this paper we come back to a problem proposed by F. Hirzebruch in the 1980's, namely whether there exists a configuration of smooth conics in the complex projective plane such that the associated desingularization of the Kummer extension is a ball quotient. We extend our considerations to the so-called $d$-configurations of curves on the projective plane and we show that in most cases for a given configuration the associated desingularization of the Kummer extension is not a ball quotient. Moreover, we provide improved versions of Hirzebruch-type inequality for $d$-configurations. Finally, we show that the so-called characteristic numbers (or $γ$ numbers) for $d$-configurations are bounded from above by $8/3$. At the end of the paper we give some examples of surfaces constructed via Kummer extensions branched along conic configurations.
On the Sylvester-Gallai and the orchard problem for pseudoline arrangements

We study a non-trivial extreme case of the orchard problem for $12$ pseudolines and we provide a complete classification of pseudoline arrangements having $19$ triple points and $9$ double points. We have also classified those that can be realized with straight lines. They include new examples different from the known example of Böröczky. Since Melchior's inequality also holds for arrangements of pseudolines, we are able to deduce that some combinatorial point-line configurations cannot be realized using pseudolines. In particular, this gives a negative answer to one of Grünbaum's problems. We formulate some open problems which involve our new examples of line arrangements.

In this note we show that there are no real configurations of $d\geq 4$ lines in the projective plane such that the associated Kummer covers of order $3^{d-1}$ are ball-quotients and there are no configurations of $d\geq 4$ lines such that the Kummer covers of order $4^{d-1}$ are ball-quotients. Moreover, we show that there exists only one configuration of real lines such that the associated Kummer cover of order $5^{d-1}$ is a ball-quotient. In the second part we consider the so-called topological $(n_{k})$-configurations and we show, using Shnurnikov's inequality, that for $n < 27$ there do not exist $(n_{5})$-configurations and and for $n < 41$ there do not exist $(n_{6})$-configurations.

In this paper we study the concept of characteristic numbers and Chern slopes in the context of curve configurations in the real and complex projective plane. We show that some extremal line configurations inherit the same asymptotic invariants, namely asymptotic Chern slopes and asymptotic Harbourne constants which sheds some light on relations between the bounded negativity conjecture and the geography problem for surfaces of general type. We discuss some properties of Kummer extensions, especially in the context of ball-quotients. Moreover, we prove that for a certain class of smooth curve configurations in the projective plane their characterstic numbers are bounded by $8/3$.
Bounded Negativity and Arrangements of Lines

The Bounded Negativity Conjecture predicts that for any smooth complex surface $X$ there exists a lower bound for the selfintersection of reduced divisors on $X$. This conjecture is open. It is also not known if the existence of such a lower bound is invariant in the birational equivalence class of $X$. In the present note we introduce certain constants $H(X)$ which measure in effect the variance of the lower bounds in the birational equivalence class of $X$. We focus on rational surfaces and relate the value of $H({\mathbb P}^2)$ to certain line arrangements. Our main result is Theorem 3.3 and the main open challenge is Problem 3.10.
