Fractional Factors, Component Factors and Isolated Vertex Conditions in Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G = (V, E)$, a {\em fractional $[a, b]$-factor} is a real valued function $h:E(G)\to [0,1]$ that satisfies $a \le ~ \sum_{e\in E_G(v)} h(e) ~ \le b$ for all $ v\in V(G)$, where $a$ and $b$ are real numbers and $E_G(v)$ denotes the set of edges incident with $v$. In this paper, we prove that the condition $\mathit{iso}(G-S) \le (k+\frac{1}{2})|S|$ is equivalent to the existence of fractional $[1,k+ \frac{1}{2}]$-factors, where ${\mathit{iso}}(G-S)$ denotes the number of isolated vertices in $G-S$. Using fractional factors as a tool, we construct component factors under the given isolated conditions. Namely, (i) a graph $G$ has a $\{P_2,C_3,P_5, \mathcal{T}(3)\}$-factor if and only if $\mathit{iso}(G-S) \le \frac{3}{2}|S|$ for all $S\subset V(G)$; (ii) a graph $G$ has a $\{K_{1,1}, K_{1,2}, \ldots,$ $K_{1,k}, \mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$-factor ($k\ge 2$) if and only if $\mathit{iso}(G-S) \le (k+\frac{1}{2})|S|$ for all $S\subset V(G)$, where $\mathcal{T}(3)$ and $\mathcal{T}(2k+1)$ are two special families of trees.

Binding Number, Toughness and General Matching Extendability in Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 21 no. 3 , Graph Theory (January 17, 2019) dmtcs:4723 • View PublicationBIB
A connected graph $G$ with at least $2m + 2n + 2$ vertices which contains a perfect matching is $E(m, n)$-{\it extendable}, if for any two sets of disjoint independent edges $M$ and $N$ with $|M| = m$ and $|N|= n$, there is a perfect matching $F$ in $G$ such that $M\subseteq F$ and $N\cap F=\emptyset$. Similarly, a connected graph with at least $n+2k+2$ vertices is called $(n,k)$-{\it extendable} if for any vertex set $S$ of size $n$ and any matching $M$ of size $k$ of $G-S$, $G-S-V(M)$ contains a perfect matching. Let $\varepsilon$ be a small positive constant, $b(G)$ and $t(G)$ be the binding number and toughness of a graph $G$. The two main theorems of this paper are: for every graph $G$ with sufficiently large order, 1) if $b(G)\geq 4/3+\varepsilon$, then $G$ is $E(m,n)$-extendable and also $(n,k)$-extendable; 2) if $t(G)\geq 1+\varepsilon$ and $G$ has a high connectivity, then $G$ is $E(m,n)$-extendable and also $(n,k)$-extendable. It is worth to point out that the binding number and toughness conditions for the existence of the general matching extension properties are almost same as that for the existence of perfect matchings.

On Murty-Simon Conjecture II
A graph is diameter two edge-critical if its diameter is two and the deletion of any edge increases the diameter. Murty and Simon conjectured that the number of edges in a diameter two edge-critical graph on $n$ vertices is at most $\lfloor \frac{n^{2}}{4} \rfloor$ and the extremal graph is the complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor, \lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil}$. In the series papers [7-9], the Murty-Simon Conjecture stated by Haynes et al. is not the original conjecture, indeed, it is only for the diameter two edge-critical graphs of even order. In this paper, we completely prove the Murty-Simon Conjecture for the graphs whose complements have vertex connectivity $\ell$, where $\ell = 1, 2, 3$; and for the graphs whose complements have an independent vertex cut of cardinality at least three.

On the Existence of General Factors in Regular Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph, and $H\colon V(G)\to 2^\mathbb{N}$ a set function associated with $G$. A spanning subgraph $F$ of $G$ is called an $H$-factor if the degree of any vertex $v$ in $F$ belongs to the set $H(v)$. This paper contains two results on the existence of $H$-factors in regular graphs. First, we construct an $r$-regular graph without some given $H^*$-factor. In particular, this gives a negative answer to a problem recently posed by Akbari and Kano. Second, by using Lovász's characterization theorem on the existence of $(g, f)$-factors, we find a sharp condition for the existence of general $H$-factors in $\{r, r+1\}$-graphs, in terms of the maximum and minimum of $H$. The result reduces to Thomassen's theorem for the case that $H(v)$ consists of the same two consecutive integers for all vertices $v$, and to Tutte's theorem if the graph is regular in addition.

An Alternative Proof of the $H$-Factor Theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $H: V(G) \rightarrow 2^{\mathbb{N}}$ be a set mapping for a graph $G$. Given a spanning subgraph $F$ of $G$, $F$ is called a {\it general factor} or an $H$-{\it factor} of $G$ if $d_{F}(x)\in H(x)$ for every vertex $x\in V(G)$. $H$-factor problems are, in general, $NP$-complete problems and imply many well-known factor problems (e.g., perfect matchings, $f$-factor problems and $(g, f)$-factor problems) as special cases. Lovász [The factorization of graphs (II), Acta Math. Hungar., 23 (1972), 223--246] gave a structure description and obtained a deficiency formula for $H$-optimal subgraphs. In this note, we use a generalized alternating path method to give a structural characterization and provide an alternative and shorter proof of Lovász's deficiency formula.

Vertex-Coloring 2-Edge-Weighting of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-{\it edge-weighting} $w$ of a graph $G$ is an assignment of an integer weight, $w(e)\in \{1,\dots, k\}$, to each edge $e$. An edge weighting naturally induces a vertex coloring $c$ by defining $c(u)=\sum_{u\sim e} w(e)$ for every $u \in V(G)$. A $k$-edge-weighting of a graph $G$ is \emph{vertex-coloring} if the induced coloring $c$ is proper, i.e., $c(u) \neq c(v)$ for any edge $uv \in E(G)$. Given a graph $G$ and a vertex coloring $c_0$, does there exist an edge-weighting such that the induced vertex coloring is $c_0$? We investigate this problem by considering edge-weightings defined on an abelian group. It was proved that every 3-colorable graph admits a vertex-coloring $3$-edge-weighting \cite{KLT}. Does every 2-colorable graph (i.e., bipartite graphs) admit a vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting? We obtain several simple sufficient conditions for graphs to be vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting. In particular, we show that 3-connected bipartite graphs admit vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting.

L-factors and adjacent vertex-distinguishing edge-weighting
An edge weighting problem of a graph G is an assignment of an integer weight to each edge e. Based on edge weighting problem, several types of vertex-coloring problems are put forward. A simple observation illuminates that edge weighting problem has a close relationship with special factors of graphs. In this paper, we obtain several results on the existence of factors with the pre-specified degrees, which generalizes earlier results in [2, 3]. Using these results, we investigate edge-weighting problem. In particular, we prove that every 4-colorable graph admits a vertex-coloring 4-edge-weighting.

Matching and Factor-Critical Property in 3-Dominating-Critical Graphs
Let $γ(G)$ be the domination number of a graph $G$. A graph $G$ is \emph{domination-vertex-critical}, or \emph{$γ$-vertex-critical}, if $γ(G-v)< γ(G)$ for every vertex $v \in V(G)$. In this paper, we show that: Let $G$ be a $γ$-vertex-critical graph and $γ(G)=3$. (1) If $G$ is of even order and $K_{1,6}$-free, then $G$ has a perfect matching; (2) If $G$ is of odd order and $K_{1,7}$-free, then $G$ has a near perfect matching with only three exceptions. All these results improve the known results.

Uniform Star-factors of Graphs with Girth Three
A {\it star-factor} of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph of $G$ such that each component of which is a star. Recently, Hartnell and Rall studied a family $\mathscr{U}$ of graphs satisfying the property that every star-factor of a member graph has the same number of edges. They determined the family $\mathscr{U}$ when the girth is at least five. In this paper, we investigate the family of graphs with girth three and determine all members of this family.

Star-uniform Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A {\it star-factor} of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph of $G$ such that each of its component is a star. Clearly, every graph without isolated vertices has a star factor. A graph $G$ is called {\it star-uniform} if all star-factors of $G$ have the same number of components. To characterize star-uniform graphs was an open problem posed by Hartnell and Rall, which is motivated by the minimum cost spanning tree and the optimal assignment problems. We use the concepts of factor-criticality and domination number to characterize all star-uniform graphs with the minimum degree at least two. Our proof is heavily relied on Gallai-Edmonds Matching Structure Theorem.

Uniformly Weighted Star-Factors of Graphs
A {\it star-factor} of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph of $G$ such that each component of which is a star. An {\it edge-weighting} of $G$ is a function $w: E(G)\longrightarrow \mathbb{N}^+$, where $\mathbb{N}^+$ is the set of positive integers. Let $Ω$ be the family of all graphs $G$ such that every star-factor of $G$ has the same weights under a fixed edge-weighting $w$. In this paper, we present a simple structural characterization of the graphs in $Ω$ that have girth at least five.

On existence of [a,b]-factors avoiding given subgraphs
For a graph $G = (V(G), E(G))$, let $i(G)$ be the number of isolated vertices in $G$. The {\it isolated toughness} of $G$ is defined as $I(G) = min\{|S|/i(G-S) : S\subseteq V(G), i(G-S)\geq 2\}$ if $G$ is not complete; $I(G)=|V(G)|-1$ otherwise. In this paper, several sufficient conditions in terms of isolated toughness are obtained for the existence of $[a, b]$-factors avoiding given subgraphs, e.g., a set of vertices, a set of edges and a matching, respectively.

On (n, k)-extendable graphs and induced subgraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$. Let $n$ and $k$ be non-negative integers such that $n + 2k \leq |V(G)| - 2$ and $|V(G)| - n$ is even. If when deleting any $n$ vertices of $G$ the remaining subgraph contains a matching of $k$ edges and every $k$-matching can be extended to a 1-factor, then $G$ is called an $(n, k)-extendable graph. In this paper we present several results about $(n, k)$-extendable graphs and its subgraphs. In particular, we proved that if $G - V(e)$ is $(n, k)$-extendable graph for each $e \in F$ (where $F$ is a fixed 1-factor in $G$), then $G$ is $(n, k)$-extendable graph.

Generalization of matching extensions in graphs (II)
Published • View PublicationBIB
Proposed as a general framework, Liu and Yu(Discrete Math. 231 (2001) 311-320) introduced $(n,k,d)$-graphs to unify the concepts of deficiency of matchings, $n$-factor-criticality and $k$-extendability. Let $G$ be a graph and let $n,k$ and $d$ be non-negative integers such that $n+2k+d\leq |V(G)|-2$ and $|V(G)|-n-d$ is even. If when deleting any $n$ vertices from $G$, the remaining subgraph $H$ of $G$ contains a $k$-matching and each such $k$- matching can be extended to a defect-$d$ matching in $H$, then $G$ is called an $(n,k,d)$-graph. In \cite{Liu}, the recursive relations for distinct parameters $n, k$ and $d$ were presented and the impact of adding or deleting an edge also was discussed for the case $d = 0$. In this paper, we continue the study begun in \cite{Liu} and obtain new recursive results for $(n,k,d)$-graphs in the general case $d \geq0$.

A Note on (3,1)-Choosable Toroidal Graphs
An $(L,d)^*$-coloring is a mapping $φ$ that assigns a color $φ(v)\in L(v)$ to each vertex $v\in V(G)$ such that at most $d$ neighbors of $v$ receive colore $φ(v)$. A graph is called $(m,d)^*$-choosable, if $G$ admits an $(L,d)^*$-coloring for every list assignment $L$ with $|L(v)|\geq m$ for all $v\in V(G)$. In this note, it is proved that every toroidal graph, which contains no adjacent triangles and contains no 6-cycles and $l$-cycles for some $l \in \{5,7\}$, is $(3,1)^*$-choosable.

Factor-Critical Property in 3-Dominating-Critical Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 309 (2009) 1079--1083 • View PublicationBIB
A vertex subset $S$ of a graph $G$ is a dominating set if every vertex of $G$ either belongs to $S$ or is adjacent to a vertex of $S$. The cardinality of a smallest dominating set is called the dominating number of $G$ and is denoted by $γ(G)$. A graph $G$ is said to be $γ$- vertex-critical if $γ(G-v)< γ(G)$, for every vertex $v$ in $G$. Let $G$ be a 2-connected $K_{1,5}$-free 3-vertex-critical graph. For any vertex $v \in V(G)$, we show that $G-v$ has a perfect matching (except two graphs), which is a conjecture posed by Ananchuen and Plummer.
