Extensions of Erdős's 1962 theorem on non-Hamiltonian graphs
For a positive integer $k$, a graph property $\mathcal{H}$, and a graph parameter $\mathcal{P}$, let $\operatorname{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n, \mathcal{H}; δ\geq k)$ denote the maximum value of $\mathcal{P}$ over all $n$-vertex graphs with minimum degree at least $k$ that do not possess the property $\mathcal{H}$. The corresponding extremal families are denoted by $\operatorname{EX}_{\mathcal{P}}(n, \mathcal{H}; δ\geq k)$. For two disjoint graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, let $H_1 \cup H_2$ denote their (disjoint) union, i.e., the graph with vertex set $V(H_1) \cup V(H_2)$ and edge set $E(H_1) \cup E(H_2)$; and let $H_1 \vee H_2$ denote their join. In 1962, Erdős established a classical theorem on the maximum number of edges in a non-Hamiltonian graph of given order and minimum degree. Motivated by recent work on feasible graph parameters in \cite{Ai2023}, we prove several extensions of Erdős's 1962 theorem on non-Hamiltonian graphs. The first result gives a common generalization of the extremal theorem due to Erdős and its spectral analogs. As direct applications, we obtain complete solutions to open problems raised in the literature since 2016, thereby improving nearly all related prior results in this direction. Our proof technique differs somewhat from those in \cite{MR3539577,MR3556876}. We also prove an analog theorem for the Hamiltonian-connected property and obtain a result which extends the theorem of Füredi, Kostochka, and Luo \cite{MR3843180} on Hamilton cycles.

On spectral conditions for fractional $k$-extendable graphs
A fractional matching of a graph $G$ is a function $h: E(G) \to [0,1]$ such that $\sum_{e \in E_G(v)} h(e) \leq 1$ for every vertex $v \in V(G)$, where $E_G(v)$ is the set of edges incident to $v$. If $\sum_{e \in E_G(v)} h(e) = 1$ for all $v$, then $h$ is a fractional perfect matching. A graph $G$ is fractional $k$-extendable if it has a matching of size $k$ and every $k$-matching $M$ in $G$ is contained in a fractional perfect matching $h$ such that $h(e)=1$ for every $e \in M$. In this paper, we establish new sufficient conditions for a graph with minimum degree $δ$ to be fractional $k$-extendable. Our main results provide spectral guarantees for this property based on the distance spectral radius and the signless Laplacian spectral radius.

Planar graphs without 4-, 7-, 9-cycles and 5-cycles normally adjacent to 3-cycles

A graph is \emph{$(\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{F})$-partitionable} if its vertex set can be partitioned into two parts such that one part $\mathcal{I}$ is an independent set, and the other $\mathcal{F}$ induces a forest. A graph is \emph{$k$-degenerate} if every subgraph $H$ contains a vertex of degree at most $k$ in $H$. Bernshteyn and Lee defined a generalization of $k$-degenerate graphs, which is called \emph{weakly $k$-degenerate}. In this paper, we show that planar graphs without $4$-, $7$-, $9$-cycles, and $5$-cycles normally adjacent to $3$-cycles are both $(\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{F})$-partitionable and weakly $2$-degenerate.

Decomposition of toroidal graphs without some subgraphs
Published in Bulletin of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society, 47 (2024) article number 39 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a family of toroidal graphs, denoted by $\mathcal{T}_{i, j}$, which contain neither $i$-cycles nor $j$-cycles. A graph $G$ is $(d, h)$-decomposable if it contains a subgraph $H$ with $Δ(H) \leq h$ such that $G - E(H)$ is a $d$-degenerate graph. For each pair $(i, j) \in \{(3, 4), (3, 6), (4, 6), (4, 7)\}$, Lu and Li proved that every graph in $\mathcal{T}_{i, j}$ is $(2, 1)$-decomposable. In this short note, we present a unified approach to prove that a common superclass of $\mathcal{T}_{i, j}$ is also $(2, 1)$-decomposable.

Variable degeneracy of planar graphs without chorded 6-cycles

A cover of a graph $G$ is a graph $H$ with vertex set $V(H) = \bigcup_{v \in V(G)} L_{v}$, where $L_{v} = \{v\} \times [s]$, and the edge set $M = \bigcup_{uv \in E(G)} M_{uv}$, where $M_{uv}$ is a matching between $L_{u}$ and $L_{v}$. A vertex set $T \subseteq V(H)$ is a transversal of $H$ if $|T \cap L_{v}| = 1$ for each $v \in V(G)$. Let $f$ be a nonnegative integer valued function on the vertex-set of $H$. If for any nonempty subgraph $Γ$ of $H[T]$, there exists a vertex $x \in V(H)$ such that $d(x) < f(x)$, then $T$ is called a strictly $f$-degenerate transversal. In this paper, we give a sufficient condition for the existence of strictly $f$-degenerate transversal for planar graphs without chorded $6$-cycles. As a consequence, every planar graph without subgraphs isomorphic to the configurations in Fig. 4 is DP-$4$-colorable.

Planar graphs with distance of 3-cycles at least 2 and no cycles of lengths 5, 6, 7

Weak degeneracy of a graph is a variation of degeneracy that has a close relationship to many graph coloring parameters. In this article, we prove that planar graphs with distance of $3$-cycles at least 2 and no cycles of lengths $5, 6, 7$ are weakly $2$-degenerate. Furthermore, such graphs can be vertex-partitioned into two subgraphs, one of which has no edges, and the other is a forest.

Claw-free cubic graphs are (1, 1, 1, 3)-packing edge-colorable
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 379 (2026) 332-338 • View PublicationBIB
For a non-decreasing positive integer sequence $S = (s_{1}, \dots, s_{k})$, an $S$-packing edge-coloring of a graph $G$ is a partition of the edge set of $G$ into subsets $E_{1}, \dots, E_{k}$ such that for each $1 \leq i \leq k$, the distance between any two distinct edges $e_{1}, e_{2} \in E_{i}$ is at least $s_{i} + 1$. Gastineau and Togni conjectured that cubic graphs, except the Petersen and Tietze graphs, admit $(1, 1, 1, 3)$-packing edge-colorings. In this paper, we prove that every claw-free cubic graph admits such a coloring.

Toroidal graphs without $K_{5}^{-}$ and 6-cycles
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 347 (2024) 114076 • View PublicationBIB
Cai et al.\ proved that a toroidal graph $G$ without $6$-cycles is $5$-choosable, and proposed the conjecture that $\textsf{ch}(G) = 5$ if and only if $G$ contains a $K_{5}$ [J. Graph Theory 65 (2010) 1--15], where $\textsf{ch}(G)$ is the choice number of $G$. However, Choi later disproved this conjecture, and proved that toroidal graphs without $K_{5}^{-}$ (a $K_{5}$ missing one edge) and $6$-cycles are $4$-choosable [J. Graph Theory 85 (2017) 172--186]. In this paper, we provide a structural description, for toroidal graphs without $K_{5}^{-}$ and $6$-cycles. Using this structural description, we strengthen Choi's result in two ways: (I) we prove that such graphs have weak degeneracy at most three (nearly $3$-degenerate), and hence their DP-paint numbers and DP-chromatic numbers are at most four; (II) we prove that such graphs have Alon-Tarsi numbers at most $4$. Furthermore, all of our results are sharp in some sense.

Planar graphs without $5^{-}$-cycles at distance less than $3$ are $(\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{F})$-colorable
A graph is $(\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{F})$-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into two subsets, one of which is an independent set, and the other induces a forest. In this paper, we prove that every planar graph without $5^{-}$-cycles at distance less than $3$ is $(\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{F})$-colorable.

Weak degeneracy of planar graphs without 4- and 6-cycles

A graph is $k$-degenerate if every subgraph $H$ has a vertex $v$ with $d_{H}(v) \leq k$. The class of degenerate graphs plays an important role in the graph coloring theory. Observed that every $k$-degenerate graph is $(k + 1)$-choosable and $(k + 1)$-DP-colorable. Bernshteyn and Lee defined a generalization of $k$-degenerate graphs, which is called \emph{weakly $k$-degenerate}. The weak degeneracy plus one is an upper bound for many graph coloring parameters, such as choice number, DP-chromatic number and DP-paint number. In this paper, we give two sufficient conditions for a plane graph without $4$- and $6$-cycles to be weakly $2$-degenerate, which implies that every such graph is $3$-DP-colorable and near-bipartite, where a graph is near-bipartite if its vertex set can be partitioned into an independent set and an acyclic set.

Weak degeneracy of planar graphs and locally planar graphs
Weak degeneracy is a variation of degeneracy which shares many nice properties of degeneracy. In particular, if a graph $G$ is weakly $d$-degenerate, then for any $(d + 1)$-list assignment $L$ of $G$, one can construct an $L$-coloring of $G$ by a modified greedy coloring algorithm. It is known that planar graphs of girth 5 are 3-choosable and locally planar graphs are 5-choosable. This paper strengthens these results and proves that planar graphs of girth 5 are weakly 2-degenerate and locally planar graphs are weakly 4-degenerate.

On odd colorings of sparse graphs

An \emph{odd $c$-coloring} of a graph is a proper $c$-coloring such that each non-isolated vertex has a color appearing an odd number of times within its open neighborhood. A \emph{proper conflict-free $c$-coloring} of a graph is a proper $c$-coloring such that each non-isolated vertex has a color appearing exactly once within its neighborhood. Clearly, every proper conflict-free $c$-coloring is also an odd $c$-coloring. Cranston conjectured that every graph $G$ with maximum average degree $\text{mad}(G) < \frac{4c}{c+2}$ (where $c \geq 4$) has an odd $c$-coloring, and he proved this conjecture for $c \in \{5, 6\}$. Note that the bound $\frac{4c}{c+2}$ is best possible. Cho et al. solved Cranston's conjecture for $c \geq 5$, strengthening the result by transitioning from odd $c$-coloring to proper conflict-free $c$-coloring. However, they did not provide all the extremal non-colorable graphs $G$ with $\text{mad}(G) = \frac{4c}{c+2}$, which remains an open question of interest. In this paper, we tackle this intriguing extremal problem. We aim to characterize all non-proper conflict-free $c$-colorable graphs $G$ with $\text{mad}(G) = \frac{4c}{c+2}$. For the case of $c=4$, Cranston's conjecture is not true, as evidenced by the existence of a counterexample: a graph whose every block is a $5$-cycle. Cho et al.\ proved that a graph $G$ with $\text{mad}(G) < \frac{22}{9}$ and no induced $5$-cycles has an odd $4$-coloring. We improve this result by proving that a graph $G$ with $\text{mad}(G) \leq \frac{22}{9}$ (with equality allowed) is not odd $4$-colorable if and only if $G$ belongs to a specific class of graphs. On the other hand, Cho et al.\ established that a planar graph with girth at least $5$ has an odd $6$-coloring; we improve it by proving that a planar graph without $4^{-}$-cycles adjacent to $7^{-}$-cycles also has an odd $6$-coloring.

Maximum odd induced subgraph of a graph concerning its chromatic number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $f_{o}(G)$ be the maximum order of an odd induced subgraph of $G$. In 1992, Scott proposed a conjecture that $f_{o}(G)\geq \frac {n} {2χ(G)}$ for a graph $G$ of order $n$ without isolated vertices, where $χ(G)$ is the chromatic number of $G$. In this paper, we show that the conjecture is not true for bipartite graphs, but is true for all line graphs. In addition, we also disprove a conjecture of Berman, Wang and Wargo in 1997, which states that $f_{o}(G)\geq 2\lfloor\frac {n} {4}\rfloor$ for a connected graph $G$ of order $n$. Scott's conjecture is open for a graph with chromatic number at least 3.

Variable degeneracy of graphs with restricted structures
Bernshteyn and Lee defined a new notion, weak degeneracy, which is slightly weaker than the ordinary degeneracy. It is proved that strictly $f$-degenerate transversal is a common generalization of list coloring, $L$-forested-coloring and DP-coloring. In this paper, we consider three classes of graphs, including planar graphs without any configuration in Fig. 2, toroidal graphs without any configuration in Fig. 5, and planar graphs without intersecting $5$-cycles. We give structural results for each class of graphs, and prove each structure is reducible for weakly $3$-degenerate and the existence of strictly $f$-degenerate transversals. As consequences, these three classes of graphs are weakly $3$-degenerate, and have a strictly $f$-degenerate transversal. Then these three classes of graph have DP-paint number at most four, and have list vertex arboricity at most two. This greatly improve all the results in [2-4, 11-13, 16-18, 22, 25, 32, 34]. Furthermore, the first and the third classes of graphs have Alon-Tarsi number at most four.

An extension of Thomassen's result on choosability
Published in Applied Mathematics and Computation, 425 (2022) 127100 • View PublicationBIB
Thomassen proved that all planar graphs are $5$-choosable. Škrekovski strengthened the result by showing that all $K_{5}$-minor-free graphs are $5$-choosable. Dvořák and Postle pointed out that all planar graphs are DP-$5$-colorable. In this note, we first improve these results by showing that every $K_{5}$-minor-free or $K_{3, 3}$-minor-free graph is DP-$5$-colorable. In the final section, we further improve these results under the term strictly $f$-degenerate transversal.

Decomposition of planar graphs with forbidden configurations

A $(d,h)$-decomposition of a graph $G$ is an ordered pair $(D, H)$ such that $H$ is a subgraph of $G$ of maximum degree at most $h$ and $D$ is an acyclic orientation of $G-E(H)$ with maximum out-degree at most $d$. In this paper, we prove that for $l \in \{5, 6, 7, 8, 9\}$, every planar graph without $4$- and $l$-cycles is $(2,1)$-decomposable. As a consequence, for every planar graph $G$ without $4$- and $l$-cycles, there exists a matching $M$, such that $G - M$ is $3$-DP-colorable and has Alon-Tarsi number at most $3$. In particular, $G$ is $1$-defective $3$-DP-colorable, $1$-defective $3$-paintable and 1-defective 3-choosable. These strengthen the results in [Discrete Appl. Math. 157~(2) (2009) 433--436] and [Discrete Math. 343 (2020) 111797].

Relaxed DP-3-coloring of planar graphs without some cycles
Published in Bulletin of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society, 45 (2022) 2681--2690 • View PublicationBIB
Dvořák and Postle introduced the concept of DP-coloring to overcome some difficulties in list coloring. Sittitrai and Nakprasit combined DP-coloring and defective list coloring to define a new coloring -- relaxed DP-coloring. For relaxed DP-coloring, Sribunhung et al. proved that planar graphs without 4- and 7-cycles are DP-(0, 2, 2)-colorable. Li et al. proved that planar graphs without 4, 8-cycles or 4, 9-cycles are DP-(1, 1, 1)-colorable. Lu and Zhu proved that planar graphs without 4, 5-cycles, or 4, 6-cycles, or 4, 7-cycles are DP-(1, 1, 1)-colorable. In this paper, we show that planar graphs without 4, 6-cycles or 4, 8-cycles are DP-(0, 2, 2)-colorable.

A duality of scaffolds for translation association schemes
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 638 (2022) 110-124 • View PublicationBIB
Scaffolds are certain tensors arising in the study of association schemes, and have been (implicitly) understood diagrammatically as digraphs with distinguished "root" nodes and with matrix edge weights, often taken from Bose-Mesner algebras. In this paper, we first present a slight modification of Martin's conjecture (2021) concerning a duality of scaffolds whose digraphs are embedded in a closed disk in the plane with root nodes all lying on the boundary circle, and then show that this modified conjecture holds true if we restrict ourselves to the class of translation association schemes, i.e., those association schemes that admit abelian regular automorphism groups.

List star edge coloring of generalized Halin graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A star $k$-edge coloring is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic paths or cycles of length four. The smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ admits a star $k$-edge coloring is the star chromatic index of $G$. Deng \etal \cite{MR2933839}, and Bezegov{á} \etal \cite{MR3431294} independently proved that the star chromatic index of a tree is at most $\lfloor \frac{3Δ}{2} \rfloor$, and the bound is sharp. Han \etal \cite{MR3924408} strengthened the result to list version of star chromatic index, and proved that $\lfloor \frac{3Δ}{2} \rfloor$ is also the sharp upper bound for the list star chromatic index of trees. A generalized Halin graph is a plane graph that consists of a plane embedding of a tree $T$ with $Δ(T) \geq 3$, and a cycle $C$ connecting all the leaves of the tree such that $C$ is the boundary of the exterior face. In this paper, we prove that if $H := T \cup C$ is a generalized Halin graph with $|C| \neq 5$, then its list star chromatic index is at most \[ \max\left\{\left\lfloor\frac{θ(T) + Δ(T)}{2}\right\rfloor, 2 \left\lfloor\frac{Δ(T)}{2}\right\rfloor + 7\right\}, \] where $θ(T) = \max_{xy \in E(T)}\{d_{T}(x) + d_{T}(y)\}$. As a consequence, if $H$ is a (generalized) Halin graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 13$, then the list star chromatic index is at most $\lfloor \frac{3Δ}{2} \rfloor$. Moreover, the upper bound for the list star chromatic index is sharp.
