Counterexamples to a conjecture of Hoa on maximal non-Hamiltonian graphs
A graph G is said to be maximal non-Hamiltonian if G is non-Hamiltonian, but $G+e$ is Hamiltonian for every nonedge $e$ of $G.$ In 1994, Vu Dinh Hoa conjectured that if $C$ is a longest cycle of a maximal non-Hamiltonian graph $G,$ then $G-V(C)$ is a complete graph. We disprove this conjecture by constructing a counterexample of every order $n\ge 56.$
On the hamiltonicity problem of bicirculants: a reduction to cyclic Haar graphs
A bicirculant is a regular graph that admits an automorphism having two vertex-orbits of the same size. A bicirculant can be described as follows. Given an integer $m \ge 1$ and sets $R, S, T \subseteq \mathbb Z_m$ such that $R=-R$, $T=-T$, $0 \not\in R \cup T$ and $0 \in S$, the graph $B(m;R,S,T)$ has vertex set $V=\{u_0,\dots,u_{m-1},v_0,\dots,v_m-1\}$ and edge set $E=\{u_iu_{i+j}| \ i \in\mathbb Z_m, j \in R\} \cup \{v_iv_{i+j}| \ i \in\mathbb Z_m, j \in T\} \cup\{u_iv_{i+j}| \ i \in\mathbb Z_m, j \in S\}.$ Bicirculant graphs with $R=T=\emptyset$ are known as cyclic Haar graphs. In 2025 we conjectured that the only non-hamiltonian graphs among regular connected bicirculants of degree more than one are the generalized Petersen graphs $G(m,2)$ with $m \equiv 5 \pmod 6$. Recently we have verified the conjecture for bicirculants with $|S|\le 2$ and for bicirculants with $|R|=|T|$ odd. In this paper we show that the conjecture holds for all bicirculants with $|S| \le 3$ and for all bicirculants with $|S| \ge 4$ and $m/\gcd(m, S)$ even. As a byproduct of our results, we prove that every connected bicirculant graph on $2m$ vertices with $|S| \ge 4$ is hamiltonian for even $m< 9\, 240$, and for odd $m< 3\,465$. Finally, we show that the existence of a hamilton cycle in every connected cyclic Haar graph of valence at least $4$ implies that every connected bicirculant graph of valence at least $4$ is hamiltonian.

Extensions of Erdős's 1962 theorem on non-Hamiltonian graphs
For a positive integer $k$, a graph property $\mathcal{H}$, and a graph parameter $\mathcal{P}$, let $\operatorname{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n, \mathcal{H}; δ\geq k)$ denote the maximum value of $\mathcal{P}$ over all $n$-vertex graphs with minimum degree at least $k$ that do not possess the property $\mathcal{H}$. The corresponding extremal families are denoted by $\operatorname{EX}_{\mathcal{P}}(n, \mathcal{H}; δ\geq k)$. For two disjoint graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, let $H_1 \cup H_2$ denote their (disjoint) union, i.e., the graph with vertex set $V(H_1) \cup V(H_2)$ and edge set $E(H_1) \cup E(H_2)$; and let $H_1 \vee H_2$ denote their join. In 1962, Erdős established a classical theorem on the maximum number of edges in a non-Hamiltonian graph of given order and minimum degree. Motivated by recent work on feasible graph parameters in \cite{Ai2023}, we prove several extensions of Erdős's 1962 theorem on non-Hamiltonian graphs. The first result gives a common generalization of the extremal theorem due to Erdős and its spectral analogs. As direct applications, we obtain complete solutions to open problems raised in the literature since 2016, thereby improving nearly all related prior results in this direction. Our proof technique differs somewhat from those in \cite{MR3539577,MR3556876}. We also prove an analog theorem for the Hamiltonian-connected property and obtain a result which extends the theorem of Füredi, Kostochka, and Luo \cite{MR3843180} on Hamilton cycles.

The circumference of a graph with given minimum degree and clique number
The circumference denoted by $c(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the length of its longest cycle. Let $δ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ denote the minimum degree and the clique number of a graph $G$, respectively. In [\emph{Electron. J. Combin.} 31(4)(2024) $\#$P4.65], Yuan proved that if $G$ is a 2-connected graph of order $n$, then $c(G)\geq \min\{n,ω(G)+δ(G)\}$ unless $G$ is one of two specific graphs. In this paper, we prove a stability result for the theorem of Erd\H os and Gallai, thereby helping us to characterize all $2$-connected non-hamiltonian graphs whose circumference equals the sum of their clique number and minimum degree. Combining this with Yuan's result, one can deduce that if $G$ is a $2$-connected graph of order $n$, then $c(G)\geq \min\{n,ω(G)+δ(G)+1\}$, unless $G$ belongs to certain specified graph classes.
Putting Tutte's counterexample to Tait's conjecture in perspective to hamiltonicity and non-hamiltonicity in certain planar cubic graphs
Using the graphs of prisms and Tutte Fragments, we construct an infinite family of hamiltonian and non-hamiltonian graphs in which Tutte's counterexample to Tait's conjecture appears in a certain sense as a minimal element. We observe that generalizations of the minimum-cardinality counterexamples of Holton and McKay to Tait's conjecture are as well contained in this family.

On minors of non-hamiltonian graphs
A theorem of Tutte states that every 4-connected non-hamiltonian graph contains $K_{3,3}$ as a minor. We strengthen this result by proving that such a graph must contain $K_{3,4}$ as a minor, thereby confirming a special case of a conjecture posed by Chen, Yu, and Zang in a strong form. This result may be viewed as a step toward characterizing the minor-minimal 4-connected non-hamiltonian graphs. As a 3-connected analog, Ding and Marshall conjectured that every 3-connected non-hamiltonian graph has a minor of $K_{3,4}$, $\mathfrak{Q}^+$, or the Herschel graph, where $\mathfrak{Q}^+$ is obtained from the cube by adding a new vertex adjacent to three independent vertices. We confirm this conjecture.
Maximizing the number of stars in graphs with forbidden properties
Erdős proved an upper bound on the number of edges in an $n$-vertex non-Hamiltonian graph with given minimum degree and showed sharpness via two members of a particular graph family. Füredi, Kostochka and Luo showed that these two graphs play the same role when ``number of edges'' is replaced by ``number of t-stars,'' and that two members of a more general graph family maximize the number of edges among non-$k$-edge-Hamiltonian graphs. In this paper we generalize their former result from Hamiltonicity to related properties (traceability, Hamiltonian-connectedness, $k$-edge Hamiltonicity, $k$-Hamiltonicity) and their latter result from edges to $t$-stars. We identify a family of extremal graphs for each property that is forbidden. This problem without the minimum degree condition was also open; here we conjecture a complete description of the extremal family for each property, and prove the characterization in some cases. Finally, using a different family of extremal graphs, we find the maximum number of $t$-stars in non-$k$-connected graphs.

Longest cycles and longest chordless cycles in $2$-connected graphs
Published in Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 112 (2025) 401-409 • View PublicationBIB
Thomassen's chord conjecture from 1976 states that every longest cycle in a $3$-connected graph has a chord. The circumference $c(G)$ and induced circumference $c'(G)$ of a graph $G$ are the length of its longest cycles and the length of its longest chordless cycles, respectively. In $2017$, Harvey proposed a stronger conjecture: Every $2$-connected graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $3$ has $c(G)\geq c'(G)+2$. This conjecture implies Thomassen's chord conjecture. We observe that wheels are the unique hamiltonian graphs for which the circumference and the induced circumference differ by exactly one. Thus we need only consider non-hamiltonian graphs for Harvey's conjecture. In this paper, we propose a conjecture involving wheels that is equivalent to Harvey's conjecture on non-hamiltonian graphs. A graph is $\ell$-holed if its all holes have length exactly $\ell$. Furthermore, we prove that Harvey's conjecture holds for $\ell$-holed graphs and graphs with a small induced circumference. Consequently, Thomassen's conjecture also holds for this two classes of graphs.

Families of Harris Graphs
A Harris Graph is a tough, Eulerian, non-Hamiltonian graph. Several approaches to creating new Harris graphs from existing ones are explored, including creating families of Harris graphs and combining Harris graphs. Pictures of all Harris Graphs through order 9 and the number of Harris graphs through order 12 are included. We also prove a result about barnacle-free Harris graphs.

Generation and New Infinite Families of $K_2$-hypohamiltonian Graphs
We present an algorithm which can generate all pairwise non-isomorphic $K_2$-hypohamiltonian graphs, i.e. non-hamiltonian graphs in which the removal of any pair of adjacent vertices yields a hamiltonian graph, of a given order. We introduce new bounding criteria specifically designed for $K_2$-hypohamiltonian graphs, allowing us to improve upon earlier computational results. Specifically, we characterise the orders for which $K_2$-hypohamiltonian graphs exist and improve existing lower bounds on the orders of the smallest planar and the smallest bipartite $K_2$-hypohamiltonian graphs. Furthermore, we describe a new operation for creating $K_2$-hypohamiltonian graphs that preserves planarity under certain conditions and use it to prove the existence of a planar $K_2$-hypohamiltonian graph of order $n$ for every integer $n\geq 134$. Additionally, motivated by a theorem of Thomassen on hypohamiltonian graphs, we show the existence $K_2$-hypohamiltonian graphs with large maximum degree and size.

Ore plus Turán
Ore in 1961 determined the maximum number of edges in graphs not containing a Hamiltonian cycle, and Turán in 1941 found the maximum number of edges in graphs not containing a $K_{r+1}$. Motivated by the work of Adamus in 2009 and Ferrero and Lesniak in 2018 on the maximum number of edges in $r$-partite non-Hamiltonian graphs, we find the maximum number of edges in $K_{r+1}$-free non-Hamiltonian graphs. Then we extend this result from Hamiltonicity to traceability, chorded pancyclicity, Hamiltonian-connectedness, $k$-path Hamiltonicity, $k$-Hamiltonicity, $k$-Hamiltonian-connectedness, and $k$-connectedness. Finally we introduce a method for translating results on the maximum number of edges to results on the maximum number of $t$-cliques using the fact that colex Turán graphs are extremal, and thus determine the maximum number of $t$-cliques in each of these classes of graphs.
Hamiltonian Complete Number of Some Variants of Caterpillar Graphs
A graph $G$ is said to be Hamiltonian if it contains a spanning cycle. In this work, we investigate the Hamiltonian completeness of certain classes of caterpillar graphs, which are trees with a central path to which all other vertices are adjacent. For a non-Hamiltonian graph $G$, the Hamiltonian complete number $λ_H(G)$ is the minimum number of edges that must be added to $G$ to make it Hamiltonian. We focus on both regular and irregular caterpillar graphs, deriving explicit formulas for $λ_H(G)$ in various cases. Specifically, we show that for a regular caterpillar graph $G_{n(k)}$ where each vertex on the central path is adjacent to $k$ leaves, $λ_H(G_{n(k)}) = n(k-1)$. We also explore irregular caterpillar graphs, where the number of leaves adjacent to each vertex on the central path varies, and provide bounds for $λ_H(G)$ in these cases. Our results contribute to the understanding of Hamiltonian properties in tree-like structures and have potential applications in network design and optimization.

Stability in Bondy's theorem on paths and cycles
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 175 (2025), 213--239 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the stability result of a well-known theorem of Bondy. We prove that for any 2-connected non-hamiltonian graph, if every vertex except for at most one vertex has degree at least $k$, then it contains a cycle of length at least $2k+2$ except for some special families of graphs. Our results imply several previous classical theorems including a deep and old result by Voss. We point out our result on stability in Bondy's theorem can directly imply a positive solution (in a slight stronger form) to the following problem: Is there a polynomial time algorithm to decide whether a 2-connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices has a cycle of length at least $\min\{2δ(G)+2,n\}$. This problem originally motivates the recent study on algorithmic aspects of Dirac's theorem by Fomin, Golovach, Sagunov and Simonov, although a stronger problem was solved by them by completely different methods. Our theorem can also help us to determine all extremal graphs for wheels on odd number of vertices. We also discuss the relationship between our results and some previous problems and theorems in spectral graph theory and generalized Turán problem.

Minimal induced subgraphs of the class of 2-connected non-Hamiltonian wheel-free graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 346, Issue 3, March 2023, 113289 • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$ and a graph property $P$ we say that $G$ is minimal with respect to $P$ if no proper induced subgraph of $G$ has the property $P$. An HC-obstruction is a minimal 2-connected non-Hamiltonian graph. Given a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-free if $G$ has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The main motivation for this paper originates from a theorem of Duffus, Gould, and Jacobson (1981), which characterizes all the minimal connected graphs with no Hamiltonian path. In 1998, Brousek characterized all the claw-free HC-obstructions. On a similar note, Chiba and Furuya (2021), characterized all (not only the minimal) 2-connected non-Hamiltonian $\{K_{1,3}, N_{3,1,1}\}$-free graphs. Recently, Cheriyan, Hajebi, and two of us (2022), characterized all triangle-free HC-obstructions and all the HC-obstructions which are split graphs. A wheel is a graph obtained from a cycle by adding a new vertex with at least three neighbors in the cycle. In this paper we characterize all the HC-obstructions which are wheel-free graphs.
Minimal induced subgraphs of two classes of 2-connected non-Hamiltonian graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 345, Issue 7, July 2022, 112869 • View PublicationBIB
In 1981, Duffus, Gould, and Jacobson showed that every connected graph either has a Hamiltonian path, or contains a claw ($K_{1,3}$) or a net (a fixed six-vertex graph) as an induced subgraph. This implies that subject to being connected, these two are the only minimal (under taking induced subgraphs) graphs with no Hamiltonian path. Brousek (1998) characterized the minimal graphs that are $2$-connected, non-Hamiltonian and do not contain the claw as an induced subgraph. We characterize the minimal graphs that are $2$-connected and non-Hamiltonian for two classes of graphs: (1) split graphs, (2) triangle-free graphs. We remark that testing for Hamiltonicity is NP-hard in both of these classes.
Hamiltonicity of the Complete Double Vertex Graph of some Join Graphs

The complete double vertex graph $M_2(G)$ of $G$ is defined as the graph whose vertices are the $2$-multisubsets of $V(G)$, and two of such vertices are adjacent in $M_2(G)$ if their symmetric difference (as multisets) is a pair of adjacent vertices in $G$. In this paper we exhibit an infinite family of graphs $G$ (containing Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian graphs) for which $M_2(G)$ are Hamiltonian.
Graphs with Many Hamiltonian Paths

A graph is \emph{hamiltonian-connected} if every pair of vertices can be connected by a hamiltonian path, and it is \emph{hamiltonian} if it contains a hamiltonian cycle. We construct families of non-hamiltonian graphs for which the ratio of pairs of vertices connected by hamiltonian paths to all pairs of vertices approaches 1. We then consider minimal graphs that are hamiltonian-connected. It is known that any order-$n$ graph that is hamiltonian-connected must have $\geq 3n/2$ edges. We construct an infinite family of graphs realizing this minimum.
Hamiltonicity of Token Graphs of some Join Graphs

Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ and let $k$ be an integer such that $1\leq k\leq n-1$. The $k$-token graph $G^{\{k\}}$ of $G$ is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-subsets of $V(G)$, where two vertices are adjacent in $G^{\{k\}}$ whenever their symmetric difference is a pair of adjacent vertices in $G$. In this paper we study the Hamiltonicity of the $k$-token graphs of some join graphs. As a consequence, we provide an infinite family of graphs (containing Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian graphs) for which their $k$-token graphs are Hamiltonian. Our result provides, to our knowledge, the first family of non-Hamiltonian graphs for which their $k$-token graphs are Hamiltonian, for $2<k<n-2$.
Hamiltonicity of the Double Vertex Graph and the Complete Double Vertex Graph of some Join Graphs
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. The double vertex graph $F_2(G)$ of $G$ is the graph whose vertices are the $2$-subsets of $V(G)$, where two vertices are adjacent in $F_2(G)$ if their symmetric difference is a pair of adjacent vertices in $G$. A generalization of this graph is the complete double vertex graph $M_2(G)$ of $G$, defined as the graph whose vertices are the $2$-multisubsets of $V(G)$, and two of such vertices are adjacent in $M_2(G)$ if their symmetric difference (as multisets) is a pair of adjacent vertices in $G$. In this paper we exhibit an infinite family of graphs (containing Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian graphs) for which $F_2(G)$ and $M_2(G)$ are Hamiltonian. This family of graphs is the set of join graphs $G=G_1 + G_2$, where $G_1$ and $G_2$ are of order $m\geq 1$ and $n\geq 2$, respectively, and $G_2$ has a Hamiltonian path. For this family of graphs, we show that if $m\leq 2n$ then $F_2(G)$ is Hamiltonian, and if $m\leq 2(n-1)$ then $M_2(G)$ is Hamiltonian.
