Nonhamiltonian regular sublinear expanders
Letzter, Methuku and Sudakov proved that sufficiently regular sublinear expanders contain nearly spanning cycles and paths. Montgomery subsequently conjectured that every regular sublinear expander of sufficiently large degree is hamiltonian. Recently, Chen, Liu, Wei and Yang disproved this conjecture by constructing $d$-regular sublinear expanders of order $n$ with $d=(1/2+o(1))\log^2 n$ and small circumference. They further posed the problem of determining whether, for every fixed $\varepsilon>0$, there exists a constant $C=C(\varepsilon)$ such that every sufficiently large $n$-vertex $d$-regular $(\varepsilon,d)$-expander with $d\ge C\log^2 n$ is hamiltonian. We answer this problem negatively by constructing, for every sufficiently small fixed $\varepsilon>0$, infinitely many nonhamiltonian $d$-regular $(\varepsilon,d)$-expanders with degrees far above the $\log^2 n$ scale.
Characterizing forbidden induced subgraphs that force top vertices to be Gallai vertices
A vertex of a graph is called a top vertex if it has maximum degree in the graph. A vertex of a graph is called a Gallai vertex if it belongs to every longest path of the graph. Golan and Shan proved that every top vertex of any connected induced-$2P_2$ free graph is a Gallai vertex. Long, Milans, and Munaro subsequently showed that if every connected induced-$H$ free graph has a Gallai vertex, then $H$ must be a linear forest of order at most nine. They also proved that, for every linear forest $H$ of order at most four, every top vertex of any connected induced-$H$ free graph is a Gallai vertex.
In this paper, we determine the graphs $H$ for which every top vertex of any connected induced-$H$ free graph is a Gallai vertex. Our result shows that this holds precisely when $H$ is a linear forest of order at most four or $H=P_3+2P_1$.
Weakly pancyclic vertices in dense nonbipartite graphs
Let $G$ be a graph of girth $g$ and circumference $c.$ A vertex $v$ of $G$ is called weakly pancyclic if $v$ lies on an $\ell$-cycle for every integer $\ell$ with $g\le \ell\le c.$ We prove that if $G$ is a nonbipartite graph of order $n\ge 5$ and size at least $\left\lfloor(n-1)^2/4\right\rfloor+2,$ then $G$ contains three weakly pancyclic vertices, with one exception. This strengthens a result of Brandt from 1997. We also pose a related problem.
Extending two results on hamiltonian graphs involving the bipartite-hole-number
The bipartite-hole-number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\widetildeα(G)$, is the minimum number $k$ such that there exist positive integers $s$ and $t$ with $s+t=k+1$ with the property that for any two disjoint sets $A,B\subseteq V(G)$ with $|A|=s$ and $|B|=t$, there is an edge between $A$ and $B$. In this paper, we first prove that any $2$-connected graph $G$ satisfying $d_G(x)+d_G(y)\ge 2\widetildeα(G)-2$ for every pair of non-adjacent vertices $x,y$ is hamiltonian except for a special family of graphs, thereby extending results of Li and Liu (2025), and Ellingham, Huang and Wei (2025). We then establish a stability version of a theorem by McDiarmid and Yolov (2017): every graph whose minimum degree is at least its bipartite-hole-number minus one is hamiltonian except for a special family of graphs.
The circumference of a graph with given minimum degree and clique number
The circumference denoted by $c(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the length of its longest cycle. Let $δ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ denote the minimum degree and the clique number of a graph $G$, respectively. In [\emph{Electron. J. Combin.} 31(4)(2024) $\#$P4.65], Yuan proved that if $G$ is a 2-connected graph of order $n$, then $c(G)\geq \min\{n,ω(G)+δ(G)\}$ unless $G$ is one of two specific graphs. In this paper, we prove a stability result for the theorem of Erd\H os and Gallai, thereby helping us to characterize all $2$-connected non-hamiltonian graphs whose circumference equals the sum of their clique number and minimum degree. Combining this with Yuan's result, one can deduce that if $G$ is a $2$-connected graph of order $n$, then $c(G)\geq \min\{n,ω(G)+δ(G)+1\}$, unless $G$ belongs to certain specified graph classes.
Cycles and paths through vertices whose degrees are at least the bipartite-hole-number
The bipartite-hole-number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\widetildeα(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that there exist positive integers $s$ and $t$ with $s + t = k + 1$, satisfying the property that for any two disjoint sets $A, B \subseteq V(G)$ with $|A| = s$ and $|B| = t$, there is at least one edge between $A$ and $B$. In 1992, Bollobás and Brightwell, and independently Shi, proved that every $2$-connected graph of order $n$ contains a cycle passing through all vertices whose degrees are at least $\frac{n}{2}$. Motivated by their result, we show that in any $2$-connected graph of order $n$, there exists a cycle containing all vertices whose degrees are at least $\widetildeα(G)$. Moreover, we prove that for any pair of vertices in a connected graph $G$, if their degrees are at least $\widetildeα(G) + 1$, then there exists a path joining them that contains all vertices whose degrees are at least $\widetildeα(G) + 1$. The results extend two existing ones.
The minimum size of a $k$-connected locally nonforesty graph
A local subgraph of a graph is the subgraph induced by the neighborhood of a vertex. Thus a graph of order $n$ has $n$ local subgraphs. A graph $G$ is called locally nonforesty if every local subgraph of $G$ contains a cycle. Clearly, a graph is locally nonforesty if and only if every vertex of the graph is the hub of a wheel. We determine the minimum size of a $k$-connected locally nonforesty graph of order $n.$
Sparse graphs with an independent or foresty minimum vertex cut
A connected graph is called fragile if it contains an independent vertex cut. In 2002 Chen and Yu proved that every connected graph of order $n$ and size at most $2n-4$ is fragile, and in 2013 Le and Pfender characterized the non-fragile graphs of order $n$ and size $2n-3.$ It is natural to consider minimum vertex cuts. We prove two results. (1) Every connected graph of order $n$ with $n\ge 7$ and size at most $\lfloor 3n/2\rfloor$ has an independent minimum vertex cut; (2) every connected graph of order $n$ with $n\ge 7$ and size at most $2n$ has a foresty minimum vertex cut. Both results are best possible.
The minimum size of a $3$-connected locally nonforesty graph
A local subgraph of a graph is the subgraph induced by the neighborhood of a vertex. Thus a graph of order $n$ has $n$ local subgraphs. A graph $G$ is called locally nonforesty if every local subgraph of $G$ contains a cycle. Recently, in studying forest cuts of a graph, Chernyshev, Rauch and Rautenbach posed the conjecture that if $n$ and $m$ are the order and size of a $3$-connected locally nonforesty graph respectively, then $m\ge 7(n-1)/3.$ We solve this problem by determining the minimum size of a $3$-connected locally nonforesty graph of order $n.$ It turns out that the conjecture does not hold.
The maximum number of cliques in graphs with given fractional matching number and minimum degree
Recently, Ma, Qian and Shi determined the maximum size of an $n$-vertex graph with given fractional matching number $s$ and maximum degree at most $d$. Motivated by this result, we determine the maximum number of $\ell$-cliques in a graph with given fractional matching number and minimum degree, which generalizes Shi and Ma's result about the maximum size of a graph with given fractional matching number and minimum degree at least one. We also determine the maximum number of complete bipartite graphs in a graph with prescribed fractional matching number and minimum degree.
