Matrices of forests, analysis of networks, and ranking problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
The matrices of spanning rooted forests are studied as a tool for analysing the structure of networks and measuring their properties. The problems of revealing the basic bicomponents, measuring vertex proximity, and ranking from preference relations / sports competitions are considered. It is shown that the vertex accessibility measure based on spanning forests has a number of desirable properties. An interpretation for the stochastic matrix of out-forests in terms of information dissemination is given.

The forest consensus theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the limiting state vector in the differential model of consensus seeking with an arbitrary communication digraph is obtained by multiplying the eigenprojection of the Laplacian matrix of the model by the vector of initial states. Furthermore, the eigenprojection coincides with the stochastic matrix of maximum out-forests of the weighted communication digraph. These statements make the forests consensus theorem. A similar result for DeGroot's iterative pooling model requires the Cesaro (time-average) limit in the general case. The forests consensus theorem is useful for the analysis of consensus protocols.

Which Digraphs with Ring Structure are Essentially Cyclic?
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 45 (2010), pp. 232-251 • View PublicationBIB
We say that a digraph is essentially cyclic if its Laplacian spectrum is not completely real. The essential cyclicity implies the presence of directed cycles, but not vice versa. The problem of characterizing essential cyclicity in terms of graph topology is difficult and yet unsolved. Its solution is important for some applications of graph theory, including that in decentralized control. In the present paper, this problem is solved with respect to the class of digraphs with ring structure, which models some typical communication networks. It is shown that the digraphs in this class are essentially cyclic, except for certain specified digraphs. The main technical tool we employ is the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. A by-product of this study is a theorem on the zeros of polynomials that differ by one from the products of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. We also consider the problem of essential cyclicity for weighted digraphs and enumerate the spanning trees in some digraphs with ring structure.

Coordination in multiagent systems and Laplacian spectra of digraphs
Published in Automation and Remote Control, Vol.70 (2009), No.3, P. 469-483 • View PublicationBIB
Constructing and studying distributed control systems requires the analysis of the Laplacian spectra and the forest structure of directed graphs. In this paper, we present some basic results of this analysis partially obtained by the present authors. We also discuss the application of these results to decentralized control and touch upon some problems of spectral graph theory.

The Matrix of Maximum Out Forests of a Digraph and Its Applications
Published in Automation and Remote Control 61 (2000) 1424--1450 • Search Publication
We study the maximum out forests of a (weighted) digraph and the matrix of maximum out forests. A maximum out forest of a digraph G is a spanning subgraph of G that consists of disjoint diverging trees and has the maximum possible number of arcs. If a digraph contains any out arborescences, then maximum out forests coincide with them. We provide a new proof to the Markov chain tree theorem saying that the matrix of Ces`aro limiting probabilities of an arbitrary stationary finite Markov chain coincides with the normalized matrix of maximum out forests of the weighted digraph that corresponds to the Markov chain. We discuss the applications of the matrix of maximum out forests and its transposition, the matrix of limiting accessibilities of a digraph, to the problems of preference aggregation, measuring the vertex proximity, and uncovering the structure of a digraph.

Spanning Forests of a Digraph and Their Applications
Published in Automation and Remote Control 62 (2001) No.3 443-466 • View PublicationBIB
We study spanning diverging forests of a digraph and related matrices. It is shown that the normalized matrix of out forests of a digraph coincides with the transition matrix in a specific observation model for Markov chains related to the digraph. Expression are given for the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse and the group inverse of the Kirchhoff (Laplacian) matrix. These expressions involve the matrix of maximum out forest of the digraph. Every matrix of out forests with a fixed number of arcs and the normalized matrix of out forests are represented as polynomials in the Kirchhoff matrix; with the help of these identities new proofs are given for the matrix-forest theorem and some other statements. A connection is specified between the forest dimension of a digraph and the degree of an annihilating polynomial for the Kirchhoff (Laplacian) matrix. Some accessibility measures for digraph vertices are considered. These are based on the enumeration of spanning forests.

On the spectra of nonsymmetric Laplacian matrices
Published in Linear Algebra and Its Applications. 2005. V. 399. 157--168 • View PublicationBIB
A Laplacian matrix is a square real matrix with nonpositive off-diagonal entries and zero row sums. As a matrix associated with a weighted directed graph, it generalizes the Laplacian matrix of an ordinary graph. A standardized Laplacian matrix is a Laplacian matrix with the absolute values of the off-diagonal entries not exceeding 1/n, where n is the order of the matrix. We study the spectra of Laplacian matrices and relations between Laplacian matrices and stochastic matrices. We prove that the standardized Laplacian matrices are semiconvergent. The multiplicities of 0 and 1 as the eigenvalues of a standardized Laplacian matrix are equal to the in-forest dimension of the corresponding digraph and one less than the in-forest dimension of the complementary digraph, respectively. These eigenvalues are semisimple. The spectrum of a standardized Laplacian matrix belongs to the meet of two closed disks, one centered at 1/n, another at 1-1/n, each having radius 1-1/n, and two closed angles, one bounded with two half-lines drawn from 1, another with two half-lines drawn from 0 through certain points. The imaginary parts of the eigenvalues are bounded from above by 1/(2n) cot(pi/2n); this maximum converges to 1/pi as n goes to infinity. Forest matrices around the Laplacian matrix
Published in Linear Algebra and Its Applications. 2002. V. 356. 253--274 • View PublicationBIB
We study the matrices Q_k of in-forests of a weighted digraph G and their connections with the Laplacian matrix L of G. The (i,j) entry of Q_k is the total weight of spanning converging forests (in-forests) with k arcs such that i belongs to a tree rooted at j. The forest matrices, Q_k, can be calculated recursively and expressed by polynomials in the Laplacian matrix; they provide representations for the generalized inverses, the powers, and some eigenvectors of L. The normalized in-forest matrices are row stochastic; the normalized matrix of maximum in-forests is the eigenprojection of the Laplacian matrix, which provides an immediate proof of the Markov chain tree theorem. A source of these results is the fact that matrices Q_k are the matrix coefficients in the polynomial expansion of adj(a*I+L). Thereby they are precisely Faddeev's matrices for -L.
