The structure of delta-matroids with width one twists
Published • View PublicationBIB
The width of a delta-matroid is the difference in size between a maximal and minimal feasible set. We give a Rough Structure Theorem for delta-matroids that admit a twist of width one. We apply this theorem to give an excluded minor characterisation of delta-matroids that admit a twist of width at most one.

On zeros of the characteristic polynomial of matroids of bounded tree-width
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 60:10-20. February 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We develop some basic tools to work with representable matroids of bounded tree-width and use them to prove that, for any prime power $q$ and constant $k$, the characteristic polynomial of any loopless, $GF(q)$-representable matroid with tree-width $k$ has no real zero greater than $q^{k-1}$.
On the relative importance of excluded minors

If EE is a set of matroids, then ex(EE) denotes the set of matroids that have no minor isomorphic to a member of EE. If EE' is a subset of EE, we say that EE' is /superfluous/ if ex(EE - EE') - ex(EE) contains only finitely many 3-connected matroids. We characterize the superfluous subsets of six well-known collections of excluded minors.
The excluded minors for near-regular matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
In unpublished work, Geelen proved that a matroid is near-regular if and only if it has no minor isomorphic to: U2,5; U3,5; the Fano plane and its dual; the non-Fano and its dual; the single-element deletion of AG(2,3), its dual, and the matroid obtained from it with a Delta-Y operation; and P8. We provide a proof of this characterization.

On contracting hyperplane elements from a 3-connected matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\tilde{K}_{3,n}$, $n\geq 3$, be the simple graph obtained from $K_{3,n}$ by adding three edges to a vertex part of size three. We prove that if $H$ is a hyperplane of a 3-connected matroid $M$ and $M \not\cong M^*(\tilde{K}_{3,n})$, then there is an element $x$ in $H$ such that the simple matroid associated with $M/x$ is 3-connected.

Contracting an element from a cocircuit
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the situation that M and N are 3-connected matroids such that |E(N)| > 3 and C* is a cocircuit of M with the property that M/y has an N-minor for some y in C*. We show that either there is an element x in C* such that si(M/x) or co(si(M/x)) is 3-connected with an N-minor, or there is a four-element fan of M that contains two elements of C* and an element x such that si(M/x) is 3-connected with an N-minor.
