Grounded L-graphs are polynomially $χ$-bounded

A grounded L-graph is the intersection graph of a collection of "L" shapes whose topmost points belong to a common horizontal line. We prove that every grounded L-graph with clique number $ω$ has chromatic number at most $17ω^4$. This improves the doubly-exponential bound of McGuinness and generalizes the recent result that the class of circle graphs is polynomially $χ$-bounded. We also survey $χ$-boundedness problems for grounded geometric intersection graphs and give a high-level overview of recent techniques to obtain polynomial bounds.

Curve pseudo-visibility graphs generalize polygon and pseudo-polygon visibility graphs and form a hereditary class of graphs. We prove that every curve pseudo-visibility graph with clique number $ω$ has chromatic number at most $3\cdot 4^{ω-1}$. The proof is carried through in the setting of ordered graphs; we identify two conditions satisfied by every curve pseudo-visibility graph (considered as an ordered graph) and prove that they are sufficient for the claimed bound. The proof is algorithmic: both the clique number and a colouring with the claimed number of colours can be computed in polynomial time.

We prove that every bipartite graph of sufficiently large average degree has either a $K_{t,t}$-subgraph or an induced subgraph of average degree at least $t$ and girth at least $6$. We conjecture that "$6$" can be replaced by "$k$", which strengthens a conjecture of Thomassen. In support of this conjecture, we show that it holds for regular graphs.
Sublinear separators in intersection graphs of convex shapes
We give a natural sufficient condition for an intersection graph of compact convex sets in R^d to have a balanced separator of sublinear size. This condition generalizes several previous results on sublinear separators in intersection graphs. Furthermore, the argument used to prove the existence of sublinear separators is based on a connection with generalized coloring numbers which has not been previously explored in geometric settings.

Shrub-depth and rank-depth are dense analogues of the tree-depth of a graph. It is well known that a graph has large tree-depth if and only if it has a long path as a subgraph. We prove an analogous statement for shrub-depth and rank-depth, which was conjectured by Hliněný, Kwon, Obdržálek, and Ordyniak [Tree-depth and vertex-minors, European J.~Combin. 2016]. Namely, we prove that a graph has large rank-depth if and only if it has a vertex-minor isomorphic to a long path. This implies that for every integer $t$, the class of graphs with no vertex-minor isomorphic to the path on $t$ vertices has bounded shrub-depth.

We prove that, for each circle graph $H$, every graph with sufficiently large rank-width contains a vertex-minor isomorphic to $H$.

A graph $G$ is $k$-ordered if for any distinct vertices $v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_k \in V(G)$, it has a cycle through $v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_k$ in order. Let $f(k)$ denote the minimum integer so that every $f(k)$-connected graph is $k$-ordered. The first non-trivial case of determining $f(k)$ is when $k=4$, where the previously best known bounds are $7 \leq f(4) \leq 40$. We prove that in fact $f(4)=7$.

An embedding of a graph in $3$-space is linkless if for every two disjoint cycles there exists an embedded ball that contains one of the cycles and is disjoint from the other. We prove that every bipartite linklessly embeddable (simple) graph on $n\ge5$ vertices has at most $3n-10$ edges, unless it is isomorphic to the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,n-3}$.

We study the maximum number of edges in an $n$ vertex graph with Colin de Verdière parameter no more than $t$. We conjecture that for every integer $t$, if $G$ is a graph with at least $t$ vertices and Colin de Verdière parameter at most $t$, then $|E(G)| \leq t|V(G)|-\binom{t+1}{2}$. We observe a relation to the graph complement conjecture for the Colin de Verdière parameter and prove the conjectured edge upper bound for graphs $G$ such that either $μ(G) \leq 7$, or $μ(G) \geq |V(G)|-6$, or the complement of $G$ is chordal, or $G$ is chordal.
