Clique Number of Tournaments II
The directed clique number $\vecω(T)$ of a tournament $T$ is the minimum, over all orderings of the vertices of $T$, of the clique number of the graph whose edges are the arcs that point backward with respect to the ordering. In this paper, we prove that, for every integer $k \geq 3$, deciding whether $\vecω(T) \leq k$ is NP-complete. This answers a question of Nguyen, Scott, and Seymour, and contrasts with the classical undirected setting, where deciding whether $ω(G) \leq k$ is polynomial-time solvable for every fixed integer $k$. On the other hand, we give a polynomial-time algorithm distinguishing tournaments with $\vecω(T) \leq 2$ from those with $\vecω(T) > 100$.
We also study the tournament analogue of the Gyárfás--Sumner conjecture. We construct new $\vecχ$-bounding tournaments and thereby prove a conjecture of Aboulker, Aubian, Charbit, and Lopes stating that every class of tournaments with bounded twin-width is $\vecχ$-bounded. We then exhibit new tournaments that are not $\vecχ$-bounding, disproving another conjecture of Aboulker, Aubian, Charbit, and Lopes, as well as two conjectures of Kim. Finally, we present infinite families of 3-$\vecω$-critical and 4-$\vecω$-critical tournaments.
Acyclic Dichromatic Number of Tournaments: these are the Champions
The acyclic dichromatic number of an oriented graph is the minimum size of a vertex-partition such that the digraphs induced by any single part are acyclic, and the oriented bipartite graphs between any two parts are acyclic too. We characterize the subtournaments that must appear in every tournament with sufficiently large acyclic dichromatic number, thereby confirming a conjecture of Bang-Jensen, Picasarri-Arrieta, and Yeo and prove that acyclic dichromatic number satisfies a local to global property.
On the Modular Chromatic Index of Random Hypergraphs
Let $k,r \geq 2$ be two integers. We consider the problem of partitioning the hyperedge set of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ into the minimum number $χ_k'(H)$ of edge-disjoint subhypergraphs in which every vertex has either degree $0$ or degree congruent to $1$ modulo $k$. For a random hypergraph $H$ drawn from the binomial model $\mathbf{H}(n,p,r)$, with edge probability $p \in (C\log(n)/n,1)$ for a large enough constant $C>0$ independent of $n$ and satisfying $n^{r-1}p(1-p)\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$, we show that asymptotically almost surely $χ_k'(H) = k$ if $n$ is divisible by $\gcd(k,r)$, and $\max(k,r) \le χ_k'(H) \le k+r+1$ otherwise. A key ingredient in our approach is a sufficient condition ensuring the existence of a $k$-factor, a $k$-regular spanning subhypergraph, within subhypergraphs of a random hypergraph from $\mathbf{H}(n,p,r)$, a result that may be of independent interest. Our main result extends a theorem of Botler, Colucci, and Kohayakawa (2023), who proved an analogous statement for graphs, and provides a partial answer to a question posed by Goetze, Klute, Knauer, Parada, Peña, and Ueckerdt (2025) regarding whether $χ_2'(H)$ can be bounded by a constant for every hypergraph $H$.
