Characterization of Trees with Maximum Security
The rank (also known as protection number or leaf-height) of a vertex in a rooted tree is the minimum distance between the vertex and any of its leaf descendants. We consider the sum of ranks over all vertices (known as the security) in binary trees, and produce a classification of families of binary trees for which the security is maximized. In addition, extremal results relating to maximum rank among all vertices in families of trees is discussed.
The distribution of the maximum protection number in simply generated trees
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 33 (2024) 518-553 • View PublicationBIB
The protection number of a vertex $v$ in a tree is the length of the shortest path from $v$ to any leaf contained in the maximal subtree where $v$ is the root. In this paper, we determine the distribution of the maximum protection number of a vertex in simply generated trees, thereby refining a recent result of Devroye, Goh and Zhao. Two different cases can be observed: if the given family of trees allows vertices of outdegree $1$, then the maximum protection number is on average logarithmic in the tree size, with a discrete double-exponential limiting distribution. If no such vertices are allowed, the maximum protection number is doubly logarithmic in the tree size and concentrated on at most two values. These results are obtained by studying the singular behaviour of the generating functions of trees with bounded protection number. While a general distributional result by Prodinger and Wagner can be used in the first case, we prove a variant of that result in the second case.
Enumeration of Generalized Dyck Paths Based on the Height of Down-Steps Modulo $k$
Published in Electron. J. Combin.30(2023), no.1, Paper No. 1.26, 18 pp • View PublicationBIB
For fixed non-negative integers $k$, $t$, and $n$, with $t < k$, a $k_t$-Dyck path of length $(k+1)n$ is a lattice path that starts at $(0, 0)$, ends at $((k+1)n, 0)$, stays weakly above the line $y = -t$, and consists of steps from the step-set $\{(1, 1), (1, -k)\}$. We enumerate the family of $k_t$-Dyck paths by considering the number of down-steps at a height of $i$ modulo $k$. Given a tuple $(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_k)$ we find an exact enumeration formula for the number of $k_t$-Dyck paths of length $(k+1)n$ with $a_i$ down-steps at a height of $i$ modulo $k$, $1 \leq i \leq k$. The proofs given are done via bijective means or with generating functions.

Down-step statistics in generalized Dyck paths
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 24, no. 1, Combinatorics (May 24, 2022) dmtcs:7163 • View PublicationBIB
The number of down-steps between pairs of up-steps in $k_t$-Dyck paths, a generalization of Dyck paths consisting of steps $\{(1, k), (1, -1)\}$ such that the path stays (weakly) above the line $y=-t$, is studied. Results are proved bijectively and by means of generating functions, and lead to several interesting identities as well as links to other combinatorial structures. In particular, there is a connection between $k_t$-Dyck paths and perforation patterns for punctured convolutional codes (binary matrices) used in coding theory. Surprisingly, upon restriction to usual Dyck paths this yields a new combinatorial interpretation of Catalan numbers.

Sums of squares of Tetranacci numbers: A generating function approach
Published in Fibonacci Quarterly, 57:4 (2019) 313-317 • View PublicationBIB
It is demonstrated how an explicit expression of the (partial) sum of Tetranacci numbers can be found and proved using generating functions and the Hadamard product. We also provide a Binet-type formula for generalized Fibonacci numbers, by explicitly factoring the denominator of their generating functions.
On two subclasses of Motzkin paths and their relation to ternary trees
Two subclasses of Motzkin paths, S-Motzkin and T-Motzkin paths, are introduced. We provide bijections between S-Motzkin paths and ternary trees, S-Motzkin paths and non-crossing trees, and T-Motzkin paths and ordered pairs of ternary trees. Symbolic equations for both paths, and thus generating functions for the paths, are provided. Using these, various parameters involving the two paths are analyzed.

A bijection between ternary trees and a subclass of Motzkin paths
A bijection between ternary trees with $n$ nodes and a subclass of Motzkin paths of length $3n$ is given. This bijection can then be generalized to $t$-ary trees.

A closed formula for the generating function of $p$-Bernoulli numbers: An elementary proof
For a two parameter family of Bernoulli numbers $B_{n, p}$ the exponential generating function is derived by elementary methods.
