Many odd zeta values are irrational
Published in Compositio Math. 155 (2019) 938-952 • View PublicationBIB
Building upon ideas of the second and third authors, we prove that at least $2^{(1-\varepsilon)\frac{\log s}{\log\log s}}$ values of the Riemann zeta function at odd integers between 3 and $s$ are irrational, where $\varepsilon$ is any positive real number and $s$ is large enough in terms of $\varepsilon$. This lower bound is asymptotically larger than any power of $\log s$; it improves on the bound $\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\log2}\log s$ that follows from the Ball--Rivoal theorem. The proof is based on construction of several linear forms in odd zeta values with related coefficients.

Palindromic Prefixes and Diophantine Approximation
Published in Monatshefte Math. 151 (2007), 11-37 • View PublicationBIB
This text is devoted to simultaneous approximation to $ξ$ and $ξ^2$ by rational numbers with the same denominator, where $ξ$ is a non-quadratic real number. We focus on an exponent $β_0(ξ)$ that measures the quality of such approximations (when they are exceptionally good). We prove that $β_0$ takes the same set of values as a combinatorial quantity that measures the abundance of palindrome prefixes in an infinite word $w$. This allows us to give a precise exposition of Roy's palindrome prefix method. The main tools we use are Davenport-Schmidt's sequence of minimal points and Roy's bracket operation.

Palindromic Prefixes and Episturmian Words
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 113.7 (2006), 1281-1304 • View PublicationBIB
Let $w$ be an infinite word on an alphabet $A$. We denote by $(n_i)_{i \geq 1}$ the increasing sequence (assumed to be infinite) of all lengths of palindrome prefixes of $w$. In this text, we give an explicit construction of all words $w$ such that $n_{i+1} \leq 2 n_i + 1$ for any $i$, and study these words. Special examples include characteristic Sturmian words, and more generally standard episturmian words. As an application, we study the values taken by the quantity $\limsup n_{i+1}/n_i$, and prove that it is minimal (among all non-periodic words) for the Fibonacci word.

Irrationalité de valeurs de zêta (d'après Apéry, Rivoal, ...)
Published in Séminaire Bourbaki 2002-2003 exposé no. 910 (Nov. 2002); Astérisque 294 (2004), 27-62 • Search Publication
This survey text deals with irrationality, and linear independence over the rationals, of values at positive odd integers of Riemann zeta function. The first section gives all known proofs (and connections between them) of Apéry's Theorem (1978) : $ζ(3)$ is irrational. The second section is devoted to a variant of the proof, published by Rivoal and Ball-Rivoal, that infinitely many $ζ(2n+1)$ are irrational. The end of this text deals with more quantitative statements.
