Uniqueness of Optimal Point Sets Determining Two Distinct Triangles
Published in Integers 21 (2021) A43 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show that the maximum number of points in $d\geq3$ dimensions determining exactly 2 distinct triangles is $2d$. We further show that this maximum is uniquely achieved by the vertices of the $d$-orthoplex. We build upon the work of Hirasaka and Shinohara who determined that the $d$-orthoplex is such an optimal configuration, but did not prove its uniqueness. Further, we present a more elementary argument for its optimality.
On the Number of Discrete Chains
We study a generalization of Erd\H os's unit distances problem to chains of $k$ distances. Given $\mathcal P,$ a set of $n$ points, and a sequence of distances $(δ_1,\ldots,δ_k)$, we study the maximum possible number of tuples of distinct points $(p_1,\ldots,p_{k+1})\in \mathcal P^{k+1}$ satisfying $|p_j p_{j+1}|=δ_j$ for every $1\leq j \leq k$. We study the problem in $\mathbb R^2$ and in $\mathbb R^3$, and derive upper and lower bounds for this family of problems.

Rainbow triangles
We seek conditions under which colorings of various vector spaces are guaranteed to have a copy of a unit equilateral triangle, having each vertex in a different color class. In particular, we explore the analogous question in the setting of vector spaces finite fields, with an appropriate notion of distance.

Pairs of dot products in finite fields and rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain bounds on the number of triples that determine a given pair of dot products arising in a vector space over a finite field or a module over the set of integers modulo a power of a prime. More precisely, given $E\subset \mathbb F_q^d$ or $\mathbb Z_q^d$, we provide bounds on the size of the set \[\left\{(u,v,w)\in E \times E \times E : u\cdot v = α, u \cdot w = β\right\}\] for units $α$ and $β$.

Upper bounds on pairs of dot products
Given a large finite point set, $P\subset \mathbb R^2$, we obtain upper bounds on the number of triples of points that determine a given pair of dot products. That is, for any pair of positive real numbers, $(α, β)$, we bound the size of the set $$\left\{(p,q,r)\in P \times P \times P : p \cdot q = α, p \cdot r = β\right\}.$$

On the number of distinct values of a class of functions with finite domain
Published • View PublicationBIB
By relating the number of images of a function with finite domain to a certain parameter, we obtain both an upper and lower bound for the image set. Even though the arguments are elementary, the bounds are, in some sense, best possible. The upper bound is also connected to triangular numbers, and a slight improvement to this bound could be obtained by resolving a problem on them. In the final section, we consider implications of our bounds in various settings, including finite fields, coding theory and additive combinatorics. In particular, we obtain the first non-trivial upper bound for the image set of a planar function over a finite field; this bound is better than the bound implied by the Dembowski-Ostrom conjecture.

A note on the multiplicative structure of an additively shifted product set, AA+1
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the multiplicative structure of sets of the form AA+1, where where A is a large, finite set of real numbers. In particular, we show that the additively shifted product set, AA+1 must have a large part outside of any generalized geometric progression of comparable length. We prove an analogous result in finite fields as well.
A Furstenberg-Katznelson-Weiss type theorem on (d + 1)-point configurations in sets of positive density in finite field geometries

We show that if $E \subset \mathbb{F}_q^d$, the $d$-dimensional vector space over the finite field with $q$ elements, and $|E| \geq ρq^d$, where $ q^{-\frac{1}{2}}\ll ρ\leq 1$, then $E$ contains an isometric copy of at least $c ρ^{d-1} q^{d+1 \choose 2}$ distinct $(d+1)$-point configurations.

On sets of directions determined by subsets of ${\Bbb R}^d$

Given $E \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \ge 2$, define ${\mathcal D}(E) \equiv {(x-y)/|x-y|: x,y \in E} \subset S^{d-1},$ the set of directions determined by $E$. We prove that if the Hausdorff dimension of $E$ is greater than $d-1$, then $σ({\mathcal D}(E))>0$, where $σ$ denotes the surface measure on $S^{d-1}$. This result is sharp since the conclusion fails to hold if $E$ is a $(d-1)$-dimensional hyper-plane. This result can be viewed as a continuous analog of a recent result of Pach, Pinchasi, and Sharir (\cite{PPS04}, \cite{PPS07}) on angles determined by finite subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Also define ${\mathcal A}(E)=\{θ(x,y,z): x,y,z \in E\},$ where $θ(x,y,z)$ is the angle between $x-y$ and $y-z$. We use the techniques developed to handle the problem of directions and results on distance sets previously obtained by Wolff and Erdogan to prove that if the Hasudorff dimension of $E$ is greater than $(d-1)/2+1/3$, then the Lebesgue measure of ${\mathcal A}(E)$ is positive. This result can be viewed as a continuous analog of a recent result of Apfelbaum and Sharir (\cite{AS05}). At the end of this paper we show that our continuous results can be used to recover and in some case improve the exponents for the corresponding results in the discrete setting for large classes of finite point sets. In particular, we prove that a finite point set $P \subset {\Bbb R}^d$, $d \ge 3$, satisfying a certain discrete energy condition (Definition \ref{adaptablemama}), determines $\gtrapprox # P$ distinct directions and $\gtrapprox {(# P)}^{6/(3d-1)}$ distinct angles. In two dimensions, the lower bound on the number of angles is $\gtrapprox # P$.

Sharpness of Falconer's estimate in continuous and arithmetic settings, geometric incidence theorems and distribution of lattice points in convex domains
In this paper we prove, for all $d \ge 2$, that for no $s<\frac{d+1}{2}$ does $I_s(μ)<\infty$ imply the canonical Falconer distance problem incidence bound, or the analogous estimate where the Euclidean norm is replaced by the norm generated by a particular convex body $B$ with a smooth boundary and everywhere non-vanishing curvature. Our construction, based on a combinatorial construction due to Pavel Valtr naturally leads us to some interesting connections between the problem under consideration, geometric incidence theorem in the discrete setting and distribution of lattice points in convex domains. We also prove that an example by Mattila can be discretized to produce a set of points and annuli for which the number of incidences is much greater than in the case of the lattice. In particular, we use the known results on the Gauss Circle Problem and a discretized version of Mattila's example to produce a non-lattice set of points and annuli where the number of incidences is much greater than in the case of the standard lattice. Finally, we extend Valtr's example into the setting of vector spaces over finite fields and show that a finite field analog of the key incidence bound is also sharp.
