Binomial Determinants for Tiling Problems Yield to the Holonomic Ansatz
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 99, January 2022, 103437 • View PublicationBIB
We present and prove closed form expressions for some families of binomial determinants with signed Kronecker deltas that are located along an arbitrary diagonal in the corresponding matrix. They count cyclically symmetric rhombus tilings of hexagonal regions with triangular holes. We extend a previous systematic study of these families, where the locations of the Kronecker deltas depended on an additional parameter, to families with negative Kronecker deltas. By adapting Zeilberger's holonomic ansatz to make it work for our problems, we can take full advantage of computer algebra tools for symbolic summation. This, together with the combinatorial interpretation, allows us to realize some new determinantal relationships. From there, we are able to resolve all remaining open conjectures related to these determinants, including one from 2005 due to Lascoux and Krattenthaler.

Moment Calculus on Ramsey Graph
When I did my thesis defense presentation eleven years ago, I chose to present the subject of Ramsey theory from the moment calculus perspective. I don't think I did too well there (although I passed). Time has passed and this is the chance to redeem myself. Here we relate Ramsey numbers, $R(k,k)$, with the method of moment calculus by checking the distribution of numbers of monochromatic complete subgraph of $k$ vertices in the random graphs. We also review Delaporte distribution's connection that was mentioned in the paper by Robertson, Cipolli and Dascalu.
A Curious Family of Binomial Determinants That Count Rhombus Tilings of a Holey Hexagon
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, vol. 166, pp. 352-381, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
We evaluate a curious determinant, first mentioned by George Andrews in 1980 in the context of descending plane partitions. Our strategy is to combine the famous Desnanot-Jacobi-Dodgson identity with automated proof techniques. More precisely, we follow the holonomic ansatz that was proposed by Doron Zeilberger in 2007. We derive a compact and nice formula for Andrews's determinant, and use it to solve a challenge problem that we posed in a previous paper. By noting that Andrews's determinant is a special case of a two-parameter family of determinants, we find closed forms for several one-parameter subfamilies. The interest in these determinants arises because they count cyclically symmetric rhombus tilings of a hexagon with several triangular holes inside.

Curious Bounds for Floor Function Sums
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 21 (2018), Article 18.1.8 • Search Publication
The sums of floor functions have been studied by Jacobsthal, Carlitz, Grimson, and Tverberg. More recently, Onphaeng and Pongsriiam proved some sharp upper and lower bounds for the sums of Jacobsthal and Tverberg. In this paper, we devise concise formulas for the sums and then use it to give proofs of the upper and lower bounds that were claimed by Tverberg. Furthermore, we present conjectural lower and upper bounds for these sums.

On the Minimum Number of Monochromatic Generalized Schur Triples
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 24(2), P2.20 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
The solution to the problem of finding the minimum number of monochromatic triples $(x,y,x+ay)$ with $a\geq 2$ being a fixed positive integer over any 2-coloring of $[1,n]$ was conjectured by Butler, Costello, and Graham (2010) and Thanathipanonda (2009). We solve this problem using a method based on Datskovsky's proof (2003) on the minimum number of monochromatic Schur triples $(x,y,x+y)$. We do this by exploiting the combinatorial nature of the original proof and adapting it to the general problem.
Determinants of Rising Powers of Second Order Linear Recurrence Entries by Means of the Desnanot-Jacobi Identity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We apply the Desnanot-Jacobi identity to give an alternative proof of the determinants whose entries are rising powers of the Fibonacci numbers given by Prodinger. We then generalize the determinants to include entries that are rising powers of the terms in a second order linear recurrence.
Determinants Containing Powers of Generalized Fibonacci Numbers
We study determinants of matrices whose entries are powers of Fibonacci numbers. We then extend the results to include entries that are powers of generalized Fibonacci numbers defined as a second-order linear recurrence relation. These studies have led us to discover a fundamental identity of determinant involving powers of linear polynomials. Finally, we discuss the determinants of matrices whose entries are products of the generalized Fibonacci numbers.

How to Beat Capablanca

This paper shows the fastest way to force a win with rook and king against king on an m*n board. In the classical case, this gives a faster win than what Capablanca suggested in his book 'Chess Fundamentals'.
