A characterisation of all vertex-transitive finite graphs of connectivity < 5
We characterise all vertex-transitive finite connected graphs as essentially 5-connected or on a short list of explicit graph-classes. Our proof heavily uses Tutte-type canonical decompositions.
A Structural Linear-Time Algorithm for Computing the Tutte Decomposition
The block-cut tree decomposes a connected graph along its cutvertices, displaying its 2-connected components. The Tutte-decomposition extends this idea to 2-separators in 2-connected graphs, yielding a canonical tree-decomposition that decomposes the graph into its triconnected components. In 1973, Hopcroft and Tarjan introduced a linear-time algorithm to compute the Tutte-decomposition. Cunningham and Edmonds later established a structural characterization of the Tutte-decomposition via totally-nested 2-separations. We present a conceptually simple algorithm based on this characterization, which computes the Tutte-decomposition in linear time. Our algorithm first computes all totally-nested 2-separations and then builds the Tutte-decomposition from them.
Along the way, we derive new structural results on the structure of totally-nested 2-separations in 2-connected graphs using a novel notion of stability, which may be of independent interest.

We provide a unique decomposition of every 4-connected graph into parts that are either quasi-5-connected, cycles of triangle-torsos and 3-connected torsos on $\leq 5$ vertices, generalised double-wheels, or thickened $K_{4,m}$'s. The decomposition can be described in terms of a tree-decomposition but with edges allowed in the adhesion-sets. Our construction is explicit, canonical, and exhibits a defining property of the Tutte-decomposition.
As a corollary, we obtain a new Tutte-type canonical decomposition of 3-connected graphs into parts that are either quasi-4-connected, generalised wheels or thickened $K_{3,m}$'s. This decomposition is similar yet different from the tri-separation decomposition.
As an application of the decomposition for 4-connectivity, in a follow-up paper we obtain a new theorem characterising all vertex-transitive finite connected graphs as essentially quasi-5-connected or on a short explicit list of graphs.
A Recolouring Version of a Conjecture of Reed
Reed conjectured that the chromatic number of any graph is closer to its clique number than to its maximum degree plus one. We consider a recolouring version of this conjecture, with respect to Kempe changes. Namely, we investigate the largest $\varepsilon$ such that all graphs $G$ are $k$-recolourable for all $k \ge \lceil \varepsilon ω(G) + (1 -\varepsilon)(Δ(G)+1) \rceil$. For general graphs, an existing construction of a frozen colouring shows that $\varepsilon \le 1/3$. We show that this construction is optimal in the sense that there are no frozen colourings below that threshold. For this reason, we conjecture that $\varepsilon = 1/3$. For triangle-free graphs, we give a construction of frozen colourings that shows that $\varepsilon \le 4/9$, and prove that it is also optimal. In the special case of odd-hole-free graphs, we show that $\varepsilon = 1/2$, and that this is tight up to one colour.
Colouring the 1-skeleton of $d$-dimensional triangulations
While every plane triangulation is colourable with three or four colours, Heawood showed that a plane triangulation is 3-colourable if and only if every vertex has even degree. In $d \geq 3$ dimensions, however, every $k \geq d+1$ may occur as the chromatic number of some triangulation of ${\mathbb S}^d$. As a first step, Joswig structurally characterised which triangulations of ${\mathbb S}^d$ have a $(d+1)$-colourable 1-skeleton. In the 20 years since Joswig's result, no characterisations have been found for any $k>d+1$.
In this paper, we structurally characterise which triangulations of ${\mathbb S}^d$ have a $(d+2)$-colourable 1-skeleton: they are precisely the triangulations that have a subdivision such that for every $(d-2)$-cell, the number of incident $(d-1)$-cells is divisible by three.
Polychromatic Colorings of Geometric Hypergraphs via Shallow Hitting Sets
A range family $\mathcal{R}$ is a family of subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$, like all halfplanes, or all unit disks. Given a range family $\mathcal{R}$, we consider the $m$-uniform range capturing hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}(V,\mathcal{R},m)$ whose vertex-sets $V$ are finite sets of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with any $m$ vertices forming a hyperedge $e$ whenever $e = V \cap R$ for some $R \in \mathcal{R}$. Given additionally an integer $k \geq 2$, we seek to find the minimum $m = m_{\mathcal{R}}(k)$ such that every $\mathcal{H}(V,\mathcal{R},m)$ admits a polychromatic $k$-coloring of its vertices, that is, where every hyperedge contains at least one point of each color. Clearly, $m_{\mathcal{R}}(k) \geq k$ and the gold standard is an upper bound $m_{\mathcal{R}}(k) = O(k)$ that is linear in $k$.
A $t$-shallow hitting set in $\mathcal{H}(V,\mathcal{R},m)$ is a subset $S \subseteq V$ such that $1 \leq |e \cap S| \leq t$ for each hyperedge $e$; i.e., every hyperedge is hit at least once but at most $t$ times by $S$. We show for several range families $\mathcal{R}$ the existence of $t$-shallow hitting sets in every $\mathcal{H}(V,\mathcal{R},m)$ with $t$ being a constant only depending on $\mathcal{R}$. This in particular proves that $m_{\mathcal{R}}(k) \leq tk = O(k)$ in such cases, improving previous polynomial bounds in $k$. Particularly, we prove this for the range families of all axis-aligned strips in $\mathbb{R}^d$, all bottomless and topless rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$, and for all unit-height axis-aligned rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
Shallow Hitting Edge Sets in Uniform Hypergraphs
A subset $M$ of the edges of a graph or hypergraph is hitting if $M$ covers each vertex of $H$ at least once, and $M$ is $t$-shallow if it covers each vertex of $H$ at most $t$ times. We consider the existence of shallow hitting edge sets and the maximum size of shallow edge sets in $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ that are regular or have a large minimum degree. Specifically, we show the following. Every $r$-uniform regular hypergraph has a $t$-shallow hitting edge set with $t = O(r)$. Every $r$-uniform regular hypergraph with $n$ vertices has a $t$-shallow edge set of size $Ω(nt/r^{1+1/t})$. Every $r$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and minimum degree $δ_{r-1}(H) \geq n/((r-1)t+1)$ has a $t$-shallow hitting edge set. Every $r$-uniform $r$-partite hypergraph with $n$ vertices in each part and minimum degree $δ'_{r-1}(H) \geq n/((r-1)t+1) +1$ has a $t$-shallow hitting edge set. We complement our results with constructions of $r$-uniform hypergraphs that show that most of our obtained bounds are best-possible.
