Schur-like numbers and a lemma of Shearer
Suppose that each number $1,2,...,N$ has one of n colours assigned. We show that if there are no monochromatic solutions to the equation $x_1+x_2+x_3=y_1+y_2$, then $N=O((n!)^{1/2})$, improving upon a result of Cwalina and Schoen. Further, a stronger bound of $N=O(((n-k)!)^{1/2})$, where $k\gg\frac{\log n}{\log\log n}$ is shown for colourings avoiding solutions to the equation $x_1+x_2+...+x_{12}=y_1+y_2+...+y_9$. Finally, some remarks on other equations are presented.
Sets with no solutions to some symmetric linear equations
We expand the class of linear symmetric equations for which large sets with no non-trivial solutions are known. Our idea is based on first finding a small set with no solutions and then enlarging it to arbitrary size using a multi-dimensional construction, crucially assuming the equation in primitive. We start by presenting the technique on some new equations. Then we use it to show that a symmetric equation with randomly chosen coefficients has a near-optimal set with no non-trivial solutions. We also show a construction for a wide class of symmetric equation in 6 variables. In the final section we present a couple of remarks on non-symmetric equations.
New bounds in the Bogolyubov-Ruzsa lemma
We establish new bounds in the Bogolyubov-Ruzsa lemma, demonstrating that if A is a subset of a finite abelian group with density alpha, then 3A-3A contains a Bohr set of rank O(log^2 (2/alpha)) and radius Omega(log^{-2} (2/alpha)). The Bogolyubov-Ruzsa lemma is one of the deepest results in additive combinatorics, with a plethora of important consequences. In particular, we obtain new results toward the Polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa conjecture and improved bounds in Freiman's theorem.
Counting solutions to invariant equations in dense sets
We prove a lower bound of exp(-C (log(2/alpha))^7)N^{k-1} to the number of solutions of an invariant equation in k variables, contained in a set of density alpha. Moreover, we give a Behrend-type construction for the same problem with the number of solutions of a convex equation bounded above by exp(-c (log(2/alpha))^2)N^{k-1}. Furthermore, improving the result of Schoen and Sisask, we show that if a set does not contain any non-trivial solutions to an equation of length at least 2(3^{m+1})+2 for some positive integer m, then its size is at most exp(-c(log N)^{1/(6+gamma)})N, where gamma = 2^{1-m}.
