Obstructions to return preservation for episturmian morphisms
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies obstructions to preservation of return sets by episturmian morphisms. We show, by way of an explicit construction, that infinitely many obstructions exist. This generalizes and improves an earlier result about Sturmian morphisms.
The carry propagation of the successor function
Given any numeration system, we call carry propagation at a number $N$ the number of digits that are changed when going from the representation of $N$ to the one of $N+1$, and amortized carry propagation the limit of the mean of the carry propagations at the first $N$ integers, when $N$ tends to infinity, if this limit exists. In the case of the usual base $p$ numeration system, it can be shown that the limit indeed exists and is equal to $p/(p-1)$. We recover a similar value for those numeration systems we consider and for which the limit exists. We address the problem of the existence of the amortized carry propagation in non-standard numeration systems of various kinds: abstract numeration systems, rational base numeration systems, greedy numeration systems and beta-numeration. We tackle the problem by three different types of techniques: combinatorial, algebraic, and ergodic. For each kind of numeration systems that we consider, the relevant method allows for establishing sufficient conditions for the existence of the carry propagation and examples show that these conditions are close to being necessary conditions.
Bifix codes and interval exchanges
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra, 19 (2015) 2781-2798 • Search Publication
We investigate the relation between bifix codes and interval exchange transformations. We prove that the class of natural codings of regular interval echange transformations is closed under maximal bifix decoding.
Return words of linear involutions and fundamental groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the natural codings of linear involutions. We deduce from the geometric representation of linear involutions as Poincaré maps of measured foliations a suitable definition of return words which yields that the set of first return words to a given word is a symmetric basis of the free group on the underlying alphabet $A$. The set of first return words with respect to a subgroup of finite index $G$ of the free group on $A$ is also proved to be a symmetric basis of $G$.
A combinatorial approach to products of Pisot substitutions
Published in Ergod. Th. Dynam. Sys. 36 (2016) 1757-1794 • View PublicationBIB
We define a generic algorithmic framework to prove pure discrete spectrum for the substitutive symbolic dynamical systems associated with some infinite families of Pisot substitutions. We focus on the families obtained as finite products of the three-letter substitutions associated with the multidimensional continued fraction algorithms of Brun and Jacobi-Perron. Our tools consist in a reformulation of some combinatorial criteria (coincidence conditions), in terms of properties of discrete plane generation using multidimensional (dual) substitutions. We also deduce some topological and dynamical properties of the Rauzy fractals, of the underlying symbolic dynamical systems, as well as some number-theoretical properties of the associated Pisot numbers.
Critical connectedness of thin arithmetical discrete planes
Published in DGCI 2013, conference proceedings LNCS 7749, 107-118 • Search Publication
An arithmetical discrete plane is said to have critical connecting thickness if its thickness is equal to the infimum of the set of values that preserve its $2$-connectedness. This infimum thickness can be computed thanks to the fully subtractive algorithm. This multidimensional continued fraction algorithm consists, in its linear form, in subtracting the smallest entry to the other ones. We provide a characterization of the discrete planes with critical thickness that have zero intercept and that are $2$-connected. Our tools rely on the notion of dual substitution which is a geometric version of the usual notion of substitution acting on words. We associate with the fully subtractive algorithm a set of substitutions whose incidence matrix is provided by the matrices of the algorithm, and prove that their geometric counterparts generate arithmetic discrete planes.

Beyond substitutive dynamical systems: S-adic expansions
Published in RIMS Kôkyûroku Bessatsu B46 (2014) p. 81-123 • Search Publication
An S-adic expansion of an infinite word is a way of writing it as the limit of an infinite product of substitutions (i.e., morphisms of a free monoid). Such a description is related to continued fraction expansions of numbers and vectors. A fundamental example of this relation is between Sturmian sequences and regular continued fractions. We study S-adic words from different perspectives, namely word combinatorics, ergodic theory, and Diophantine approximation, by stressing the parallel with continued fraction expansions.
Notes on sets of first return
We prove in this note that, for an alphabet with three letters, the set of first return to a given word in a set satisfying the tree condition is a basis of the free group.
Maximal bifix decoding
Published in Discrete Math. 338 (2015)725-742 • Search Publication
We introduce a class of sets of words which is a natural common generalization of Sturmian sets and of interval exchange sets. This class of sets consists of the uniformly recurrent tree sets, where the tree sets are defined by a condition on the possible extensions of bispecial factors. We prove that this class is closed under maximal bifix decoding. The proof uses the fact that the class is also closed under decoding with respect to return words.
Acyclic, connected and tree sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a set $F$ of words, one associates to each word $w$ in $F$ an undirected graph, called its extension graph, and which describes the possible extensions of $w$ on the left and on the right. We investigate the family of sets of words defined by the property of the extension graph of each word in the set to be acyclic or connected or a tree. We prove that in a uniformly recurrent tree set, the sets of first return words are bases of the free group on the alphabet. Concerning acyclic sets, we prove as a main result that a set $F$ is acyclic if and only if any bifix code included in $F$ is a basis of the subgroup that it generates.
The finite index basis property
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra, 219 (2015) 2521-2537 • Search Publication
We describe in this paper a connection between bifix codes, symbolic dynamical systems and free groups. This is in the spirit of the connection established previously for the symbolic systems corresponding to Sturmian words. We introduce a class of sets of factors of an infinite word with linear factor complexity containing Sturmian sets and regular interval exchange sets, namemly the class of tree sets. We prove as a main result that for a uniformly recurrent tree set $F$, a finite bifix code $X$ on the alphabet $A$ is $F$-maximal of $F$-degree $d$ if and only if it is the basis of a subgroup of index $d$ of the free group on $A$.
Balance properties of Arnoux-Rauzy words
Published in International Journal of Algebra and Computation 23, 4 (2013) 689-704 • View PublicationBIB
The paper deals with balances and imbalances in Arnoux-Rauzy words. We provide sufficient conditions for $C$-balancedness, but our results indicate that even a characterization of 2-balanced Arnoux-Rauzy words on a 3-letter alphabet is not immediate.

Substitutive Arnoux-Rauzy sequences have pure discrete spectrum
Published in Uniform Distribution Theory 7 (2012), no. 1, 173-197 • Search Publication
We prove that the symbolic dynamical system generated by a purely substitutive Arnoux-Rauzy sequence is measurably conjugate to a toral translation. The proof is based on an explicit construction of a fundamental domain with fractal boundary (a Rauzy fractal) for this toral translation.

Selfdual Substitutions in Dimension One
There are several notions of the 'dual' of a word/tile substitution. We show that the most common ones are equivalent for substitutions in dimension one, where we restrict ourselves to the case of two letters/tiles. Furthermore, we obtain necessary and sufficient arithmetic conditions for substitutions being selfdual in this case. Since many connections between the different notions of word/tile substitution are discussed, this paper may also serve as a survey paper on this topic.

Connectedness of fractals associated with Arnoux-Rauzy substitutions
Published in RAIRO-Theor. Inf. Appl. 48 (2014) 249-266 • View PublicationBIB
Rauzy fractals are compact sets with fractal boundary that can be associated with any unimodular Pisot irreducible substitution. These fractals can be defined as the Hausdorff limit of a sequence of compact sets, where each set is a renormalized projection of a finite union of faces of unit cubes. We exploit this combinatorial definition to prove the connectedness of the Rauzy fractal associated with any finite product of three-letter Arnoux-Rauzy substitutions.
Sturm numbers and substitution invariance of 3iet words
In this paper, we give a necessary condition for an infinite word defined by a non-degenerate interval exchange on three intervals (3iet word) to be invariant by a substitution: a natural parameter associated to this word must be a Sturm number. We deduce some algebraic consequences from this condition concerning the incidence matrix of the associated substitution. As a by-product of our proof, we give a combinatorial characterization of 3iet words.
