Intersecting hypergraphs with large cover number
In their famous 1974 paper introducing the local lemma, Erdős and Lovász posed a question-later referred by Erdős as one of his three favorite open problems: What is the minimum number of edges in an $r$-uniform, intersecting hypergraph with cover number $r$? This question was solved up to a constant factor in Kahn's remarkable 1994 paper. More recently, motivated by applications to Bollobás' ''power of many colours'' problem, Alon, Bucić, Christoph, and Krivelevich introduced a natural generalization by imposing a space constraint that limits the hypergraph to use only $n$ vertices. In this note we settle this question asymptotically, up to a logarithmic factor in $n/r$ in the exponent, for the entire range.

Relative Lonely Runner spectra
For a subtorus $T \subseteq (\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})^n$, let $D(T)$ denote the $L^\infty$-distance from $T$ to the point $(1/2, \ldots, 1/2)$. For a subtorus $U \subseteq (\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})^n$, define $\mathcal{S}_1(U)$, the Lonely Runner spectrum relative to $U$, to be the set of all values of $D(T)$ as $T$ ranges over the $1$-dimensional subtori of $U$ not contained in the union of the coordinate hyperplanes of $(\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})^n$. The relative spectrum $\mathcal{S}_1((\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})^n)$ is the ordinary Lonely Runner spectrum that has been studied previously. Giri and the second author recently showed that the relative spectra $\mathcal{S}_1(U)$ for $2$-dimensional subtori $U \subseteq (\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})^n$ essentially govern the accumulation points of the Lonely Runner spectrum $\mathcal{S}_1((\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})^n)$. In the present work, we prove that such relative spectra $\mathcal{S}_1(U)$ have a very rigid arithmetic structure, and that one can explicitly find a complete characterization of each such relative spectrum with a finite calculation; carrying out this calculation for a few specific examples sheds light on previous constructions in the literature on the Lonely Runner Problem.

Exact Formulae for the Fractional Partition Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partition function $p(n)$ has been a testing ground for applications of analytic number theory to combinatorics. In particular, Hardy and Ramanujan invented the "circle method" to estimate the size of $p(n)$, which was later perfected by Rademacher who obtained an exact formula. Recently, Chan and Wang considered the fractional partition functions, defined by $\sum_{n = 0}^\infty p_α(n)x^n := \prod_{k=1}^\infty (1-x^k)^{-α}$. In this paper we use the Rademacher circle method to find an exact formula for $p_α(n)$ and study its implications, including log-concavity and the higher-order generalizations (i.e., the Turán inequalities) that $p_α(n)$ satisfies.
