Three-dimensional symmetric designs of propriety 3
We define symmetric designs of dimension $n$ and propriety $d$, providing a unifying generalization of several classes of higher-dimensional symmetric designs previously studied. We focus on the case $n=d=3$, which leads to the following question: Can we fill the $v^3$ cells of a $v\times v\times v$ cube with $\{0,1\}$ in such a way that each layer parallel to each face contains a fixed number $k$ of ones, and that for every two parallel layers there are exactly $λ$ positions where they have matching ones? We establish necessary conditions on the parameters $(v,k,λ)$, introduce notions of difference sets and multipliers for these objects, and enumerate small examples up to equivalence. Furthermore, we construct infinite families of these objects using difference sets, symmetric designs, doubly regular tournaments, Hadamard matrices, Latin cubes, and association schemes on triples.
Steiner 3-designs as extensions
In this article, we construct a Steiner system with the parameters $S(3,6,42)$, settling one of the smallest open parameter sets of Steiner $3$-designs. Furthermore, we establish the existence of rotational Steiner quadruple systems on $46$ and $92$ points.
Our construction method is based on extending Steiner $2$-designs using prescribed extension groups. We also consider extensions to designs of higher strength. The article includes a table and a discussion of the status of all admissible parameters for Steiner $3$-designs on at most $50$ points.

The Kramer-Mesner method for constructing designs with a prescribed automorphism group $G$ has proven effective many times. In the special case of Steiner designs, the task reduces to solving an exact cover problem, with the advantage that fast backtracking solvers like Donald Knuth's dancing links and dancing cells can be used. We find ways to encode the inherent symmetry of the problem space, induced by the action of the normalizer of $G$, into a single instance of the exact cover problem. This eliminates redundant computations of certain isomorphic search branches, while preventing the overhead caused by repeatedly restarting the solver.
Our improved approach is applied to the parameters $S(2,6,91)$. Previously, only four such Steiner designs were known, all of which had been constructed as cyclic designs over four decades ago. We find $23$ new designs, each with full automorphism group of order $84$.

We study two kinds of generalizations of symmetric block designs to higher dimensions, the so-called $\mathcal{C}$-cubes and $\mathcal{P}$-cubes. For small parameters, all examples up to equivalence are determined by computer calculations. Known properties of automorphisms of symmetric designs are extended to autotopies of $\mathcal{P}$-cubes, while counterexamples are found for $\mathcal{C}$-cubes. An algorithm for the classification of $\mathcal{P}$-cubes with prescribed autotopy groups is developed and used to construct more examples. A bound on the dimension of difference sets for $\mathcal{P}$-cubes is proved and shown to be tight in elementary abelian groups. The construction is generalized to arbitrary groups by introducing regular sets of (anti)automorphisms.
Projection cubes of symmetric designs
We introduce a new type of $n$-dimensional generalization of symmetric $(v,k,λ)$ block designs. We prove upper bounds on the dimension $n$ in terms of $v$ and $k$. We also define the corresponding concept of $n$-dimensional difference sets, and extend some classic families of difference sets to higher dimensions. Complete classifications are performed for small parameters $(v,k,λ)$ and some interesting examples are presented.

We give the first example of a mosaic of three combinatorial designs with distinct parameters $2$-$(13,3,1)$, $2$-$(13,4,2)$, and $2$-$(13,6,5)$. Furthermore, we give examples of mosaics of $2$-$(9,3,2)$ designs that are not resolvable, thereby answering a question posed by M. Wiese and H. Boche. Finally, we give an example of a mosaic of projective planes of order $3$ that cannot be obtained by tiling groups with difference sets.

We describe a construction of three-dimensional Hadamard matrices of even order $v$ such that $v-1$ is a prime power. The construction covers infinitely many orders for which the existence was previously open.

We study $n$-dimensional matrices with $\{0,1\}$-entries ($n$-cubes) such that all their $2$-dimensional slices are incidence matrices of symmetric designs. A known construction of these objects obtained from difference sets is generalized so that the resulting $n$-cubes may have inequivalent slices. For suitable parameters, they can be transformed into $n$-dimensional Hadamard matrices with this property. In contrast, previously known constructions of $n$-dimensional designs all give examples with equivalent slices.

We study combinatorial configurations with the associated point and line graphs being strongly regular. Examples not belonging to known classes such as partial geometries and their generalizations or elliptic semiplanes are constructed. Necessary existence conditions are proved and a table of feasible parameters of such configurations with at most 200 points is presented. Non-existence of some configurations with feasible parameters is proved.

We study sums of the form $\sum_{k=m}^n a_{nk} b_{km}$, where $a_{nk}$ and $b_{km}$ are binomial coefficients or unsigned Stirling numbers. In a few cases they can be written in closed form. Failing that, the sums still share many common features: combinatorial interpretations, Pascal-like recurrences, inverse relations with their signed versions, and interpretations as coefficients of change between polynomial bases.

Computational techniques for the construction of quasi-symmetric block designs are explored and applied to the case with $56$ points. One new $(56,16,18)$ and many new $(56,16,6)$ designs are discovered, and non-existence of $(56,12,9)$ and $(56,20,19)$ designs with certain automorphism groups is proved. The number of known symmetric $(78,22,6)$ designs is also significantly increased.

We establish the existence of simple designs with parameters $2$-$(55,10,4)$, $3$-$(20,5,4)$, $3$-$(21,7,30)$, $4$-$(15,5,2)$, $4$-$(16,8,45)$, $5$-$(16,7,10)$, and $5$-$(17,8,40)$, which have previously been unknown. For the corresponding $t$, $v$, and $k$, we study the set of all $λ$ for which simple $t$-$(v,k,λ)$ designs exist.
