A characterization of graphs with small palette index
Published in Symmetry, 2023, 15, 154 • View PublicationBIB
Given an edge-coloring of a graph $G$, we associate to every vertex $v$ of $G$ the set of colors appearing on the edges incident with $v$. The palette index of $G$ is defined as the minimum number of such distinct sets, taken over all possible edge-colorings of $G$. A graph with a small palette index admits an edge-coloring which can be locally considered to be almost symmetric, since few different sets of colors appear around its vertices. Graphs with palette index $1$ are $r$-regular graphs admitting an $r$-edge-coloring, while regular graphs with palette index $2$ do not exist. Here, we characterize all graphs with palette index either $2$ or $3$ in terms of the existence of suitable decompositions in regular subgraphs. As a corollary, we obtain a complete characterization of regular graphs with palette index $3$.
Perfect matchings, Hamiltonian cycles and edge-colourings in a class of cubic graphs

A graph $G$ has the Perfect-Matching-Hamiltonian property (PMH-property) if for each one of its perfect matchings, there is another perfect matching of $G$ such that the union of the two perfect matchings yields a Hamiltonian cycle of $G$. The study of graphs that have the PMH-property, initiated in the 1970s by Las Vergnas and Häggkvist, combines three well-studied properties of graphs, namely matchings, Hamiltonicity and edge-colourings. In this work, we study these concepts for cubic graphs in an attempt to characterise those cubic graphs for which every perfect matching corresponds to one of the colours of a proper 3-edge-colouring of the graph. We discuss that this is equivalent to saying that such graphs are even-2-factorable (E2F), that is, all 2-factors of the graph contain only even cycles. The case for bipartite cubic graphs is trivial, since if $G$ is bipartite then it is E2F. Thus, we restrict our attention to non-bipartite cubic graphs. A sufficient, but not necessary, condition for a cubic graph to be E2F is that it has the PMH-property. The aim of this work is to introduce an infinite family of E2F non-bipartite cubic graphs on two parameters, which we coin papillon graphs, and determine the values of the respective parameters for which these graphs have the PMH-property or are just E2F. We also show that no two papillon graphs with different parameters are isomorphic.
Strongly regular configurations
Published in Designs Codes and Cryptography 90 (2022) 1881-1897 • View PublicationBIB
We study combinatorial configurations with the associated point and line graphs being strongly regular. Examples not belonging to known classes such as partial geometries and their generalizations or elliptic semiplanes are constructed. Necessary existence conditions are proved and a table of feasible parameters of such configurations with at most 200 points is presented. Non-existence of some configurations with feasible parameters is proved.
Extending perfect matchings to Hamiltonian cycles in line graphs
Published in Electron. J. Comb. 28, No. 1, Research Paper P1.7, 13 pgs. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
A graph admitting a perfect matching has the Perfect-Matching-Hamiltonian property (for short the PMH-property) if each of its perfect matchings can be extended to a Hamiltonian cycle. In this paper we establish some sufficient conditions for a graph $G$ in order to guarantee that its line graph $L(G)$ has the PMH-property. In particular, we prove that this happens when $G$ is (i) a Hamiltonian graph with maximum degree at most $3$, (ii) a complete graph, or (iii) an arbitrarily traceable graph. Further related questions and open problems are proposed along the paper.
Colourings of cubic graphs inducing isomorphic monochromatic subgraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-bisection of a bridgeless cubic graph $G$ is a $2$-colouring of its vertex set such that the colour classes have the same cardinality and all connected components in the two subgraphs induced by the colour classes (monochromatic components in what follows) have order at most $k$. Ban and Linial conjectured that every bridgeless cubic graph admits a $2$-bisection except for the Petersen graph. A similar problem for the edge set of cubic graphs has been studied: Wormald conjectured that every cubic graph $G$ with $|E(G)| \equiv 0 \pmod 2$ has a $2$-edge colouring such that the two monochromatic subgraphs are isomorphic linear forests (i.e. a forest whose components are paths). Finally, Ando conjectured that every cubic graph admits a bisection such that the two induced monochromatic subgraphs are isomorphic. In this paper, we give a detailed insight into the conjectures of Ban-Linial and Wormald and provide evidence of a strong relation of both of them with Ando's conjecture. Furthermore, we also give computational and theoretical evidence in their support. As a result, we pose some open problems stronger than the above mentioned conjectures. Moreover, we prove Ban-Linial's conjecture for cubic cycle permutation graphs. As a by-product of studying $2$-edge colourings of cubic graphs having linear forests as monochromatic components, we also give a negative answer to a problem posed by Jackson and Wormald about certain decompositions of cubic graphs into linear forests.
Treelike snarks

We study snarks whose edges cannot be covered by fewer than five perfect matchings. Esperet and Mazzuoccolo found an infinite family of such snarks, generalising an example provided by Hagglund. We construct another infinite family, arising from a generalisation in a different direction. The proof that this family has the requested property is computer-assisted. In addition, we prove that the snarks from this family (we call them treelike snarks) have circular flow number five and admit a 5-cycle double cover.
Even Orientations and Pfaffian graphs
We give a characterization of Pfaffian graphs in terms of even orientations, extending the characterization of near bipartite non--pfaffian graphs by Fischer and Little \cite{FL}. Our graph theoretical characterization is equivalent to the one proved by Little in \cite{L73} (cf. \cite{LR}) using linear algebra arguments.
