A spectral condition for odd cycles in graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a sharp spectral condition for the existence of odd cycles in a graph of given order. We also prove a related stability result.

Turan's theorem inverted
Published • View PublicationBIB
Turan's theorem implies that every graph of order n with more edges than the r-partite Turan graph contains a complete graph of order r+1. We show that the same premise implies the existence of much larger graphs. We also prove corresponding stability theorems. These results complete work started by Erdos in 1963.

Stability for large forbidden subgraphs

We extend the classical stability theorem of Erdos and Simonovits for forbidden graphs of logarithmic order.

A spectral Erdos-Stone-Bollobas theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a bound on the spectral radius of a graph implying a quantitative version of the Erdos-Stone theorem.

More spectral bounds on the clique and independence numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give some new bounds for the clique and independence numbers of a graph in terms of its eigenvalues.

The spectral radius of subgraphs of regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a bound on the spectral radius of subgraphs of regular graphs with given order and diameter. We give a lower bound on the smallest eigenvalue of a nonbipartite regular graph of given order and diameter.

An Abstract Regularity Lemma
We extend Szemeredi's Regularity Lemma (SRL) to abstract measure spaces. Our main aim is to find general conditions under which the original proof of Szemeredi still works. To illustrate that our approach has some merit, we outline several applications. Some of these applications seem to be tailored to our approach: in particular, we are not aware of any alternative proofs.

Ramsey Goodness and Beyond
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a seminal paper from 1983, Burr and Erdos started the systematic study of Ramsey numbers of cliques vs. large sparse graphs, raising a number of problems. In this paper we develop a new approach to such Ramsey problems using a mix of the Szemeredi regularity lemma, embedding of sparse graphs, Turan type stability, and other structural results. We give exact Ramsey numbers for various classes of graphs, solving all but one of the Burr-Erdos problems.

Graphs with many r-cliques have large complete r-partite subgraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that for all $r\geq2$ and c>0, every graph of order n with at least cn^{r} cliques of order r contains a complete r-partite graph with each part of size $\lfloor c^{r}\log n \rfloor.$ This result implies a concise form of the Erdős-Stone theorem.

Regular, pseudo-regular, and almost regular matrices
We give lower bounds on the largest singular value of arbitrary matrices, some of which are asymptotically tight for almost all matrices. To study when these bounds are exact, we introduce several combinatorial concepts. In particular, we introduce regular, pseudo-regular, and almost regular matrices. Nonnegative, symmetric, almost regular matrices were studied earlier by Hoffman, Wolfe, and Hoffmeister.

Numerical radius and zero pattern of matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give tight upper bounds on the numerical range of square matrices in terms of their Frobenius (Euclidian) norm and a combinatorial parameter similar to the clique number of graphs. Our results imply a concise form of the fundamental theorem of Turan in extremal graph theory.

Chromatic number and spectral radius
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a graph, H be its chromatic number, L be the largest eigenvalue of its Laplacian, and M be the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. Then, complementing a well-known result of Hoffman, we show that L>=(H/(H-1))M

The Moore bound for Spectral Radius
We give an upper bound on the largest eigenvalue of a graph of given order, size, and girth.

Bounds on graph eigenvalues II
Published • View PublicationBIB
Some recent results on graph eigenvalues are improved. In particular, among all graphs of given order with no cliques of order $(r+1)$ the $r$-partite Turan graph has maximal spectral radius.

Graphs and Hermitian matrices: exact interlacing
We prove conditions for equality between the extreme eigenvalues of a matrix and its quotient. In particular, we give a lower bound on the largest singular value of a matrix and generalize a result of Finck and Grohmann about the largest eigenvalue of a graph.

Revisiting two classical results on graph spectra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let mu(G) and mu_min(G) be the largest and smallest eigenvalues of the adjacency matricx of a graph G. We refine quantitatively the following two results on graph spectra. (i) if H is a proper subgraph of a connected graph G, then mu(G)>mu(H). (ii) if G is a connected nonbipartite graph, then mu(G)>-mu_min(G).

The sum of the squares of degrees: an overdue assignement
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let f(n,m) be the maximum of the sum of the squares of degrees of a graph with n vertices and m edges. Summarizing earlier research, we present a concise, asymptotically sharp upper bound on f(n,m), better than the bound of de Caen for almost all n and m.

Cliques and the Spectral Radius
We present a number of relations involving the number of cliques in a graph and its spectral radius.

Linear combinations of graph eigenvalues
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let F(G) be a fixed linear combination of the k extremal eigenvalues of a graph G and of its complement. The problem of finding max{F(G):v(G)=n} generalizes a number of problems raised previously in the literature. We show that the limit max{F(G):v(G)=n}/n exists when n tends to infinity. We also answer a question of Gernert about the sum of the two maximal eigenvalues of a graph.
