An extension of Maclaurin's inequalities
We give a combinatorial extension of the classical inequalities of Maclaurin about symmetric functions of several variables. We discuss two problems - one analytical and another combinatorial - and show that they are in some sense equaivalent. These results complete and extend earlier results of Motzkin and Straus, Khadzhiivanov, Sos and Straus, Fisher and Ryan, and Petingi and Rodriguez.
Eigenvalues and extremal degrees in graphs

We give inequalities relating the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix and the Laplacian of a graph, and its minimum and maximum degrees. The results are applied to derive new conditions for quasi-randomness of graphs.
Graphs and matrices of maximal energy

Call the sum of the singular values of a matrix A the energy of A. We investigate graphs and matrices of energy close to the maximal one. We prove a conjecture of Koolen and Moulten and give a stability theorem characterizing all square nonnegative matrices and all graphs with energy close to the maximal one. In particular, such graphs are quasi-random.

We improve recent results relating graph eigenvalues to other graph parameters like girth, domination number, and minimum degree.
Spectral Radius and maximum degree of connected graphs
We give an upper bound on the maximal eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a connected graph in terms of its maximum degree, diameter and order. This bound is best possible up to a constant factor and improves prevoius results of Stevanovic, Zhang, and Alon and Sudakov.

Given a graph G of order n and size m, let s(G)= sum|d(u)-2m/n|, where the sum is taken over all vertices u of G. We investigate upper and lower bounds on eigenvalues of G in terms of s(G).

We give upper and lower bounds on the spectral radius of a graph in terms of the number of walks. We generalize a number of known results.

In 1970 Nosal gave upper and lower bounds on the sum of the spectral radii of a graph and its complement. We generalize this problem to other eigenvalues and give a number of bounds. We essentially solve the corresponding problem for the second eigenvalues.
The minimum number of 4-cliques in graphs with triangle-free complement
Write f(n) for the minimum number of 4-cliques in graphs of order n with triangle-free complement. Finding f(n) is a particular case of a problem raised by Erdos in 1962. We give an upper bound of f(n) and a matching lower bound when the graph is close to regular.

A book of size N is the union of N triangles sharing a common edge. We show that the Ramsey number of a book of size N vs. a book of size M equals 2N+3 for all N>(10^6)M. Our proof is based on counting.

An r-book of size q is a union of q (r+1)-cliques sharing a common r-clique. We find exactly the Ramsey number of a p-clique versus r-books of sufficiently large size. Furthermore, we find asymptotically the Ramsey number of any fixed p-chromatic graph versus r-books of sufficiently large size. The key element in our proofs is Szemeredi's Regularity Lemma.

A book of size q is the union of q triangles sharing a common edge. We find the exact Ramsey number of books of size q versus books of size p when p<q/6-o(q).
Books in graphs
A book of size $q$ is a set of $q$ triangles sharing a common edge. We study the size of the maximal book in a graph as a function of the number of its edges. In particular, we answer two questions of Erdos about graphs that are union of triangles.
Graphs and Hermitian matrices: discrepancy and singular values
We introduce a measure of discrepancy of Hermitian matrices and establish an inequality between the second singular value of a Hermitian matrix and its discrepancy. These results are applied to answer two questions of Fan Chung about graph eigenvalues.
Degree powers in graphs with forbidden subgraphs
Yuster and Caro initiated the study of the sum of powers of the degrees of graphs with forbidden subgraphs. We settle two of their conjectures.
The Cycle-Complete graph Ramsey numbers

We find the Ramsey number of a cycle vs. a complete graph when the order of the cycle is at least 4 times as large as the order of the complete graph. This partially confirms a conjecture of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp made in 1978.

We show that if a graph contains few induced copies of a given graph then its edges are distribited unevenly.
The asymptotics of strongly regular graphs
A strongly regular graph is called trivial if it or its complement is a union of disjoint cliques. We prove that every infinite family of nontrivial strongly regular graphs is quasi-random in the sense of Chung, Graham and Wilson.
