Foucaud {\it et al.} recently introduced and initiated the study of a new graph-theoretic concept in the area of network monitoring. Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$, $M$ a subset of $V(G)$, and $e$ be an edge in $E(G)$, and let $P(M, e)$ be the set of pairs $(x,y)$ such that $d_G(x, y)\neq d_{G-e}(x, y)$ where $x\in M$ and $y\in V(G)$. $M$ is called a \emph{distance-edge-monitoring set} if every edge $e$ of $G$ is monitored by some vertex of $M$, that is, the set $P(M, e)$ is nonempty. The {\em distance-edge-monitoring number} of $G$, denoted by $\operatorname{dem}(G)$, is defined as the smallest size of distance-edge-monitoring sets of $G$. For two graphs $G,H$ of order $m,n$, respectively, in this paper we prove that $\max\{m\operatorname{dem}(H),n\operatorname{dem}(G)\} \leq\operatorname{dem}(G\,\Box \,H) \leq m\operatorname{dem}(H)+n\operatorname{dem}(G) -\operatorname{dem}(G)\operatorname{dem}(H)$, where $\Box$ is the Cartesian product operation. Moreover, we characterize the graphs attaining the upper and lower bounds and show their applications on some known networks. We also obtain the distance-edge-monitoring numbers of join, corona, cluster, and some specific networks.
Constructions of regular sparse anti-magic squares
Graph labeling is a well-known and intensively investigated problem in graph theory. Sparse anti-magic squares are useful in constructing vertex-magic labeling for graphs. For positive integers $n,d$ and $d<n$, an $n\times n$ array $A$ based on $\{0,1,\cdots,nd\}$ is called \emph{a sparse anti-magic square of order $n$ with density $d$}, denoted by SAMS$(n,d)$, if each element of $\{1,2,\cdots,nd\}$ occurs exactly one entry of $A$, and its row-sums, column-sums and two main diagonal sums constitute a set of $2n+2$ consecutive integers. An SAMS$(n,d)$ is called \emph{regular} if there are exactly $d$ positive entries in each row, each column and each main diagonal. In this paper, we investigate the existence of regular sparse anti-magic squares of order $n\equiv1,5\pmod 6$, and it is proved that for any $n\equiv1,5\pmod 6$, there exists a regular SAMS$(n,d)$ if and only if $2\leq d\leq n-1$.
Magic squares with all subsquares of possible orders based on extended Langford sequences
A magic square of order $n$ with all subsquares of possible orders (ASMS$(n)$) is a magic square which contains a general magic square of each order $k\in\{3, 4, \cdots, n-2\}$. Since the conjecture on the existence of an ASMS was proposed in 1994, much attention has been paid but very little is known except for few sporadic examples. A $k$-extended Langford sequence of defect $d$ and length $m$ is equivalent to a partition of $\{1,2,\cdots,2m+1\}\backslash\{k\}$ into differences $\{d,\cdots,d+m-1\}$. In this paper, a construction of ASMS based on extended Langford sequence is established. As a result, it is shown that there exists an ASMS$(n)$ for $n\equiv\pm3\pmod{18}$, which gives a partial answer to Abe's conjecture on ASMS.
A generalization of product construction of multimagic squares
In this paper, constructions of multimagic squares are investigated. Diagonal Latin squares and Kronecker products are used to get some constructions of multimagic squares. Consequently, some new families of compound multimagic squares are obtained.
