Hausdorff dimension of Graphs of Limit Functions Generated by Quasi-Linear Functions
The limit functions generated by quasi-linear functions or sequences (including the sum of the Rudin-Shapiro sequence as an example) are continuous but almost everywhere non-differentiable functions. Their graphs are fractal curves. In 2017 and 2020, Chen, Lü, Wen and the first author studied the box dimension of the graphs of the limit functions. In this paper, we focus on the Hausdorff dimension of the graphs of such limit functions. We first prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of the limit function generated by the abelian complexity of the Rudin-Shapiro sequence is $\frac{3}{2}$. Then we extend the result to the graphs of limit functions generated by quasi-linear functions.

$N$-factor complexity of the infinite Fibonacci sequence and digital sequences
In this paper, we introduce a variation of the factor complexity, called the $N$-factor complexity, which allows us to characterize the complexity of sequences on an infinite alphabet. We evaluate precisely the $N$-factor complexity for the infinite Fibonacci sequence $\mathbf{f}$ given by Zhang, Wen and Wu [Electron. J. Comb., 24 (2017)]. The $N$-factor complexity of a class of digit sequences, whose $n$th term is defined to be the number of occurrences of a given block in the base-$k$ representation of $n$, is also discussed.

On the 2-binomial complexity of the generalized Thue-Morse words
In this paper, we study the $2$-binomial complexity $b_{\mathbf{t}_{m},2}(n)$ of the generalized Thue-Morse words $\mathbf{t}_{m}$ for every integer $m\geq 3$. We obtain the exact value of $b_{\mathbf{t}_{m},2}(n)$ for every integer $n\geq m^{2}$. As a consequence, $b_{\mathbf{t}_{m},2}(n)$ is ultimately periodic with period $m^{2}$. This result partially answers a question of M. Lejeune, J. Leroy and M. Rigo [Computing the $k$-binomial complexity of the Thue-Morse word, J. Comb. Theory Ser. A, {\bf 176} (2020) 105284].

Self-similarity of $\mathcal{P}$-positions of $(2n+1)$-dimensional Wythoff's game
Published • View PublicationBIB
Wythoff's game as a classic combinatorial game has been well studied. In this paper, we focus on $(2n+1)$-dimensional Wythoff's game; that is the Wythoff's game with $(2n+1)$ heaps. We characterize their $\mathcal{P}$-positions explicitly and show that they have self-similar structures. In particular, the set of all $\mathcal{P}$-positions of $3$-dimensional Wythoff's game generates the well-known fractal set---the Sierpinski sponge.

Hankel determinants of a Sturmian sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $τ$ be the substitution $1\to 101$ and $0\to 1$ on the alphabet $\{0,1\}$. The fixed point of $τ$ leading by 1, denoted by $\mathbf{s}$, is a Sturmian sequence. We first give a characterization of $\mathbf{s}$ using $f$-representation. Then we show that the distribution of zeros in the determinants induces a partition of integer lattices in the first quadrant. Combining those properties, we give the explicit values of the Hankel determinants $H_{m,n}$ of $\mathbf{s}$ for all $m\ge 0$ and $n\ge 1$.

Criteria for apwenian sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1998, Allouche, Peyrière, Wen and Wen showed that the Hankel determinant $H_n$ of the Thue-Morse sequence over $\{-1,1\}$ satisfies $H_n/2^{n-1}\equiv 1~(\mathrm{mod}~2)$ for all $n\geq 1$. Inspired by this result, Fu and Han introduced \emph{apwenian} sequences over $\{-1,1\}$, namely, $\pm 1$ sequences whose Hankel determinants satisfy $H_n/2^{n-1}\equiv 1~(\mathrm{mod}~2)$ for all $n\geq 1$, and proved with computer assistance that a few sequences are apwenian. In this paper, we obtain an easy to check criterion for apwenian sequences, which allows us to determine all apwenian sequences that are fixed points of substitutions of constant length. Let $f(z)$ be the generating functions of such apwenian sequences. We show that for all integer $b\ge 2$ with $f(1/b)\neq 0$, the real number $f(1/b)$ is transcendental and its irrationality exponent is equal to $2$. Besides, we also derive a criterion for zero-one apwenian sequences whose Hankel determinants satisfy $H_n\equiv 1~(\mathrm{mod}~2)$ for all $n\geq 1$. We find that the only zero-one apwenian sequence, among all fixed points of substitutions of constant length, is the period-doubling sequence. Various examples of apwenian sequences given by substitutions with projection are also given. Furthermore, we prove that all Sturmian sequences over $\{-1,1\}$ or $\{0,1\}$ are not apwenian. And we conjecture that fixed points of substitution of non-constant length over $\{-1,1\}$ or $\{0,1\}$ can not be apwenian.
Sum-free sets generated by the period-k-folding sequences and some Sturmian sequences

First, we show that the sum-free set generated by the period-doubling sequence is not $κ$-regular for any $κ\geq 2$. Next, we introduce a generalization of the period-doubling sequence, which we call the period-$k$-folding sequences. We show that the sum-free sets generated by the period-$k$-folding sequences also fail to be $κ$-regular for all $κ\geq 2$. Finally, we study the sum-free sets generated by Sturmian sequences that begin with `11', and their difference sequences.

On the additive complexity of a Thue-Morse like sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the additive complexity $ρ^{+}_{\mathbf{t}}(n)$ of a Thue-Morse like sequence $\mathbf{t}=σ^{\infty}(0)$ with the morphism $σ: 0\to 01, 1\to 12, 2\to 20$. We show that $ρ^{+}_{\mathbf{t}}(n)=2\lfloor\log_2(n)\rfloor+3$ for all integers $n\geq 1$. Consequently, $(ρ_{\mathbf{t}}(n))_{n\geq 1}$ is a $2$-regular sequence.

On the abelian complexity of the Rudin-Shapiro sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the abelian complexity of the Rudin-Shapiro sequence and a related sequence. We show that these two sequences share the same complexity function $ρ(n)$ which satisfies certain recurrence relations. As a consequence, the abelian complexity function is $2$-regular. Further, we prove that the box dimension of the graph of the asymptotic function $λ(x)$ is $3/2$ where $λ(x)=\lim_{k\to\infty}ρ(4^{k}x)/\sqrt{4^{k}x}$ and $ρ(x)=ρ(\lfloor x\rfloor)$ for any $x> 0$.

Hankel determinants of the Cantor sequence

In the paper, we give the recurrent equations of the Hankel determinants of the Cantor sequence, and show that the Hankel determinants as a double sequence is 3-automatic. With the help of the Hankel determinants, we prove that the irrationality exponent of the Cantor number, i.e. the transcendental number with Cantor sequence as its b-ary expansion, equals 2.

On the regular sum-free sets
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 49, October 2015, Pages 42-56 • View PublicationBIB
Cameron introduced a bijection between the set of sum-free sets and the set of all zero-one sequences. In this paper, we study the sum-free sets of natural numbers corresponding to certain zero-one sequences which contain the Cantor-like sequences and some substitution sequences, etc. Those sum- free sets considered as integer sequences are 2-regular. We also prove that sequences corresponding to certain sum-free sets are automatic.
