Given a class of graphs F, we say that a graph G is universal for F, or F-universal, if every H in F is contained in G as a subgraph. The construction of sparse universal graphs for various families F has received a considerable amount of attention. One is particularly interested in tight F-universal graphs, i.e., graphs whose number of vertices is equal to the largest number of vertices in a graph from F. Arguably, the most studied case is that when F is some class of trees.
Given integers n and Δ, we denote by T(n,Δ) the class of all n-vertex trees with maximum degree at most Δ. In this work, we show that every n-vertex graph satisfying certain natural expansion properties is T(n,Δ)-universal or, in other words, contains every spanning tree of maximum degree at most Δ. Our methods also apply to the case when Δis some function of n. The result has a few very interesting implications. Most importantly, we obtain that the random graph G(n,p) is asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) universal for the class of all bounded degree spanning (i.e., n-vertex) trees provided that p \geq c n^{-1/3} \log^2n where c > 0 is a constant. Moreover, a corresponding result holds for the random regular graph of degree pn. In fact, we show that if Δsatisfies \log n \leq Δ\leq n^{1/3}, then the random graph G(n,p) with p \geq c Δn^{-1/3} \log n and the random r-regular n-vertex graph with r \geq cΔn^{2/3} \log n are a.a.s. T(n,Δ)-universal. Another interesting consequence is the existence of locally sparse n-vertex T(n,Δ)-universal graphs. For constant Δ, we show that one can (randomly) construct n-vertex T(n,Δ)-universal graphs with clique number at most five. Finally, we show robustness of random graphs with respect to being universal for T(n,Δ) in the context of the Maker-Breaker tree-universality game.

We consider the hard-core lattice gas model on Z^d and investigate its phase structure in high dimensions. We prove that when the intensity parameter exceeds Cd^{-1/3}(log d)^2, the model exhibits multiple hard-core measures, thus improving the previous bound of Cd^{-1/4}(log d)^{3/4} given by Galvin and Kahn. At the heart of our approach lies the study of a certain class of edge cutsets in Z^d, the so-called odd cutsets, that appear naturally as the boundary between different phases in the hard-core model. We provide a refined combinatorial analysis of the structure of these cutsets yielding a quantitative form of concentration for their possible shapes as the dimension d tends to infinity. This analysis relies upon and improves previous results obtained by the first author.

We characterize the structure of maximum-size sum-free subsets of a random subset of an Abelian group $G$. In particular, we determine the threshold $p_c \approx \sqrt{\log n / n}$ above which, with high probability as $|G| \to \infty$, each such subset is contained in a maximum-size sum-free subset of $G$, whenever $q$ divides $|G|$ for some (fixed) prime $q$ with $q \equiv 2 \pmod 3$. Moreover, in the special case $G = \ZZ_{2n}$, we determine a sharp threshold for the above property. The proof uses recent 'transference' theorems of Conlon and Gowers, together with stability theorems for sum-free subsets of Abelian groups.
Corrádi and Hajnal's theorem for sparse random graphs

In this paper we extend a classical theorem of Corrádi and Hajnal into the setting of sparse random graphs. We show that if $p(n) \gg (\log n / n)^{1/2}$, then asymptotically almost surely every subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree at least $(2/3 + o(1))np$ contains a triangle packing that covers all but at most $O(p^{-2})$ vertices. Moreover, the assumption on $p$ is optimal up to the $(\log n)^{1/2}$ factor and the presence of the set of $O(p^{-2})$ uncovered vertices is indispensable. The main ingredient in the proof, which might be of independent interest, is an embedding theorem which says that if one imposes certain natural regularity conditions on all three pairs in a balanced 3-partite graph, then this graph contains a perfect triangle packing.
Pancyclic subgraphs of random graphs

An $n$-vertex graph is called pancyclic if it contains a cycle of length $t$ for all $3 \leq t \leq n$. In this paper, we study pancyclicity of random graphs in the context of resilience, and prove that if $p \gg n^{-1/2}$, then the random graph $G(n,p)$ a.a.s. satisfies the following property: Every Hamiltonian subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with more than $(1/2 + o(1)){n \choose 2}p$ edges is pancyclic. This result is best possible in two ways. First, the range of $p$ is asymptotically tight; second, the proportion 1/2 of edges cannot be reduced. Our theorem extends a classical theorem of Bondy, and is closely related to a recent work of Krivelevich, Lee, and Sudakov. The proof uses a recent result of Schacht (also independently obtained by Conlon and Gowers).
