Efficient space reduction techniques by optimized majority rules for the Kemeny aggregation problem
The Kemeny aggregation problem consists of computing the consensus rankings of an election with respect to the Kemeny-Young voting method. These aggregated rankings are the geometric medians as well as the maximum likelihood estimators in the Mallows model of the rankings in the election under the Kendall-tau distance which counts the number of pairwise disagreements. The problem admits fundamental applications in various domains such as computational social choice, machine learning, operations research, and biology but its computational complexity is unfortunately expensive. In this paper, we establish optimized quantitative extensions of the well-known 3/4-majority rule of Betzler et al. and the Major Order Theorem of Hamel and Milosz for the Kemeny aggregation problem. By taking into account the extra information available in the problem such as the number of candidates and by considering an additional optimization of certain piecewise linear functions in one variable, our results achieve significantly more refined space reduction techniques as illustrated by experimental results on real and synthetic data without increasing the time complexity of the algorithms.
On images of subshifts under injective morphisms of symbolic varieties

We show that the image of a subshift $X$ under various injective morphisms of symbolic algebraic varieties over monoid universes with algebraic variety alphabets is a subshift of finite type, resp. a sofic subshift, if and only if so is $X$. Similarly, let $G$ be a countable monoid and let $A$, $B$ be Artinian modules over a ring. We prove that for every closed subshift submodule $Σ\subset A^G$ and every injective $G$-equivariant uniformly continuous module homomorphism $τ\colon Σ\to B^G$, a subshift $Δ\subset Σ$ is of finite type, resp. sofic, if and only if so is the image $τ(Δ)$. Generalizations for admissible group cellular automata over admissible Artinian group structure alphabets are also obtained.

In this paper, we introduce the classes of weakly surjunctive and linearly surjunctive groups which include all sofic groups and more generally all surjunctive groups. We investigate various properties of such groups and establish in particular a reversibility and invertibility theorem for injective endomorphisms of symbolic group varieties over weakly surjunctive group universes with algebraic group alphabets in arbitrary characteristic. We also obtain novel evidence related to Kaplansky's stable finiteness conjecture.

Let $G$ be a group. Let $X$ be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$. Denote by $A=X(K)$ the set of rational points of $X$. We study algebraic group cellular automata $τ\colon A^G \to A^G$ whose local defining map is induced by a homomorphism of algebraic groups $X^M \to X$ where $M$ is a finite memory. When $G$ is sofic and $K$ is uncountable, we show that if $τ$ is post-surjective then it is weakly pre-injective. Our result extends the dual version of Gottschalk's Conjecture for finite alphabets proposed by Capobianco, Kari, and Taati. When $G$ is amenable, we prove that if $τ$ is surjective then it is weakly pre-injective, and conversely, if $τ$ is pre-injective then it is surjective. Hence, we obtain a complete answer to a question of Gromov on the Garden of Eden theorem in the case of algebraic group cellular automata.

Let $G$ be a countable monoid and let $A$ be an Artinian group (resp. an Artinian module). Let $Σ\subset A^G$ be a closed subshift which is also a subgroup (resp. a submodule) of $A^G$. Suppose that $Γ$ is a finitely generated monoid consisting of pairwise commuting cellular automata $Σ\to Σ$ that are also homomorphisms of groups (resp. homomorphisms of modules) with monoid binary operation given by composition of maps. We show that the valuation action of $Γ$ on $Σ$ satisfies a natural intrinsic shadowing property. Generalizations are also established for families of endomorphisms of admissible group subshifts.
