Maximal right smooth extension chains
If $w=uα$ for $α\in Σ=\{1,2\}$ and $u\in Σ^*$, then $w$ is said to be a \textit{simple right extension}of $u$ and denoted by $u\prec w$. Let $k$ be a positive integer and $P^k(ε)$ denote the set of all $C^\infty$-words of height $k$. Set $u_{1},\,u_{2},..., u_{m}\in P^{k}(ε)$, if $u_{1}\prec u_{2}\prec ...\prec u_{m}$ and there is no element $v$ of $P^{k}(ε)$ such that $v\prec u_{1}\text{or} u_{m}\prec v$, then $u_{1}\prec u_{2}\prec...\prec u_{m}$ is said to be a \textit{maximal right smooth extension (MRSE) chains}of height $k$. In this paper, we show that \textit{MRSE} chains of height $k$ constitutes a partition of smooth words of height $k$ and give the formula of the number of \textit{MRSE} chains of height $k$ for each positive integer $k$. Moreover, since there exist the minimal height $h_1$ and maximal height $h_2$ of smooth words of length $n$ for each positive integer $n$, we find that \textit{MRSE} chains of heights $h_1-1$ and $h_2+1$ are good candidates to be used to establish the lower and upper bounds of the number of smooth words of length $n$ respectively, which is simpler and more intuitionistic than the previous methods.

Let $γ_{a,b}(n)$ be the number of smooth words of length $n$ over the alphabet $\{a,b\}$ with $a<b$. Say that a smooth word $w$ is \emph{left fully extendable} (LFE) if both $aw$ and $bw$ are smooth. In this paper, we prove that for any positive number $ξ$ and positive integer $n_{0}$ such that the proportion of $b$'s is larger than $ξ$ for each LFE word of length exceeding $n_0$, there are two constants $c_{1}\,\textrm{and}\, c_{2}$ such that for each positive integer $n$, one has {eqnarray} c_{1}\cdot n^{\frac{\log (2b-1)}{\log (1+(a+b-2)(1-ξ))}}<γ_{a,b}(n)< c_2\cdot n^{\frac{\log (2b-1)}{\log (1+(a+b-2)ξ)}}. {eqnarray} In particular, taking $a=1\text{and}b=2$ in the above inequalities arrives at Huang and Weakley's result. Moreover, for 2-letter even alphabet $\{a,b\}$, there are two suitable constants $c_1,\,c_2$ such that \{eqnarray} c_{1}\cdot n^{\frac{\log (2b-1)}{\log ((a+b)/2)}}<γ_{a,b}(n)< c_2\cdot n^{\frac{\log (2b-1)}{\log ((a+b)/2)}}\textit{for each positive integer $n$}.\{eqnarray}
Smooth infinite words over $n$-letter alphabets having same remainder when divided by $n$
Brlek et al. (2008) studied smooth infinite words and established some results on letter frequency, recurrence, reversal and complementation for 2-letter alphabets having same parity. In this paper, we explore smooth infinite words over $n$-letter alphabet $\{a_1,a_2,...,a_n\}$, where $a_1<a_2<...<a_n$ are positive integers and have same remainder when divided by $n$. And let $a_i=n\cdot q_i+r,\;q_i\in N$ for $i=1,2,...,n$, where $r=0,1,2,...,n-1$. We use distinct methods to prove that (1) if $r=0$, the letters frequency of two times differentiable well-proportioned infinite words is $1/n$, which suggests that the letter frequency of the generalized Kolakoski sequences is $1/2$ for 2-letter even alphabets; (2) the smooth infinite words are recurrent; (3) if $r=0$ or $r>0 \text{ and }n$ is an even number, the generalized Kolakoski words are uniformly recurrent for the alphabet $Σ_n$ with the cyclic order; (4) the factor set of three times differentiable infinite words is not closed under any nonidentical permutation. Brlek et al.'s results are only the special cases of our corresponding results.
