Monadic dependence from reducts, and applications to twin-width of oriented graphs
We study monadic dependence of binary relational structures including at least one antisymmetric relation.
Our cornerstone result gives sufficient conditions for proving that a structure is monadically dependent by only considering some of its reducts, assuming they are structurally well-behaved and compatible enough. As an application, we consider some reorientation rules preserving monadic dependence of binary structures, as well as replacement of one antisymmetric relation with bounded independence number by another. Then, we apply our main (technical) result to the study of twin-width in two ways.
First, generalizing the fact that twin-width boundedness is equivalent to being expandable by a linear order into a monadically dependent class, we prove that it is also equivalent to being expandable by an oriented graph with bounded independence number (for instance by a poset with bounded width or by a tournament), and that FO-model checking is fixed-parameter tractable on such an expansion.
Second, we show delineation by twin-width for some new classes of oriented graphs, including oriented split graphs and local tournaments. In all these cases, we also obtain fixed-parameter tractability of FO-model checking.
On merge-models
Tree-ordered weakly sparse models have recently emerged as a robust framework for representing structures in an ``almost sparse'' way, while allowing the structure to be reconstructed through a simple first-order interpretation. A prominent example is given by twin-models, which are bounded twin-width tree-ordered weakly sparse representations of structures with bounded twin-width derived from contraction sequences. In this paper, we develop this perspective further. First, we show that twin-models can be chosen such that they preserve linear clique-width or clique-width up to a constant factor. Then, we introduce \emph{merge-models}, a natural analog of twin-models for merge-width. Merge-models represent binary relational structures by tree-ordered weakly sparse structures. The original structures can then be recovered by a fixed first-order interpretation. A merge-model can be constructed from a merge sequence. Then, its radius-$r$ merge-width will be, up to a constant factor, bounded by the radius-$r$ width of the merge sequence from which it is derived. Finally, we show that twin-models arise naturally as special cases of merge-models, and that binary structures with bounded twin-width are exactly those having a loopless merge-model with bounded radius-$r_0$ merge-width (for some sufficiently large constant $r_0$).
Characterizations of monadically dependent tree-ordered weakly sparse structures
A class of structures is monadically dependent if one cannot interpret all graphs in colored expansions from the class using a fixed first-order formula. A tree-ordered $σ$-structure is the expansion of a $σ$-structure with a tree-order. A tree-ordered $σ$-structure is weakly sparse if the Gaifman graph of its $σ$-reduct excludes some biclique (of a given fixed size) as a subgraph. Tree-ordered weakly sparse graphs are commonly used as tree-models (for example for classes with bounded shrubdepth, structurally bounded expansion, bounded cliquewidth, or bounded twin-width), motivating their study on their own. In this paper, we consider several constructions on tree-ordered structures, such as tree-ordered variants of the Gaifman graph and of the incidence graph, induced and non-induced tree-ordered minors, and generalized fundamental graphs. We provide characterizations of monadically dependent classes of tree-ordered weakly sparse $σ$-structures based on each of these constructions, some of them establishing unexpected bridges with sparsity theory. As an application, we prove that a class of tree-ordered weakly sparse structures is monadically dependent if and only if its sparsification is nowhere-dense. Moreover, the sparsification transduction translates boundedness of clique-width and linear clique-width into boundedness of tree-width and path-width. We also prove that first-order model checking is not fixed parameter tractable on independent hereditary classes of tree-ordered weakly sparse graphs (assuming $\mathsf{AW}[*]\neq \mathsf{FPT}$) and give what we believe is the first model-theoretical characterization of classes of graphs excluding a minor, thus opening a new perspective of structural graph theory.
Computational results on semistrong edge coloring of graphs
The semistrong edge coloring, as a relaxation of the well-known strong edge coloring, can be used to model efficient communication scheduling in wireless networks. An edge coloring of a graph $G$ is called \emph{semistrong} if every color class $M$ is a matching such that every edge of $M$ is incident with a vertex of degree 1 in the subgraph of $G$ induced by the endvertices of edges in $M$. The \emph{semistrong chromatic index} $χ_{ss}'(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of colors required for a semistrong edge coloring. In this paper, we prove that the problem of determining whether a graph $G$ has a semistrong edge coloring with $k$ colors is polynomial-time solvable for $k\le2$ and is NP-complete for $k\ge3$. For trees, we develop a polynomial-time algorithm to determine the semistrong chromatic index exactly.

Strengthened notions of a matching $M$ of a graph $G$ have been considered, requiring that the matching $M$ has some properties with respect to the subgraph $G_M$ of $G$ induced by the vertices covered by $M$: If $M$ is the unique perfect matching of $G_M$, then $M$ is a \emph{uniquely restricted matching} of $G$; if all the edges of $M$ are pendant edges of $G_M$, then $M$ is a \emph{semistrong matching} of $G$; if all the vertices of $G_M$ are pendant, then $M$ is an \emph{induced matching} of $G$. Strengthened notions of edge coloring and of the chromatic index follow.
In this paper, we consider the maximum semistrong chromatic index of planar graphs with given maximum degree $Δ$. We prove that graphs with maximum average degree less than ${14}/{5}$ have semistrong chromatic index (hence uniquely restricted chromatic index) at most $2Δ+4$, and we reduce the bound to $2Δ+2$ if the maximum average degree is less than ${8}/{3}$. These cases cover, in particular, the cases of planar graphs with girth at least 7 (resp. at least 8).
Our result makes some progress on the conjecture of Lu{ž}ar, Mockov{č}iakov{á} and Sot{á}k [J.~Graph Theory 105 (2024) 612--632], which asserts that every planar graph $G$ has a semistrong edge coloring with $2Δ+C$ colors, for some universal constant $C$. (Note that such a conjecture would fail for strong edge coloring as there exist graphs with arbitrarily large maximum degree that are not strongly $(4Δ-5)$-edge-colorable.) We provide an example of a planar graph showing that the maximum semistrong chromatic index of planar graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ is at least $2Δ+4$.
Proving a conjecture on the upper bound of semistrong chromatic indices of graphs
Let $G=(V(G), E(G))$ be a graph with maximum degree $Δ$. For a subset $M$ of $E(G)$, we denote by $G[V(M)]$ the subgraph of $G$ induced by the endvertices of edges in $M$. We call $M$ a semistrong matching if each edge of $M$ is incident with a vertex that is of degree 1 in $G[V(M)]$. Given a positive integer $k$, a semistrong $k$-edge-coloring of $G$ is an edge coloring using at most $k$ colors in which each color class is a semistrong matching of $G$. The semistrong chromatic index of $G$, denoted by $χ'_{ss}(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ has a semistrong $k$-edge-coloring. Recently, Lužar, Mockovčiaková and Soták conjectured that $χ'_{ss}(G)\le Δ^{2}-1$ for any connected graph $G$ except the complete bipartite graph $K_{Δ,Δ}$. In this paper, we settle this conjecture by proving that each such graph $G$ other than a cycle on $7$ vertices has a semistrong edge coloring using at most $Δ^{2}-1$ colors.

Let $G$ be a graph and $k$ a positive integer. A strong $k$-edge-coloring of $G$ is a mapping $φ: E(G)\to \{1,2,\dots,k\}$ such that for any two edges $e$ and $e'$ that are either adjacent to each other or adjacent to a common edge, $φ(e)\neq φ(e')$. The strong chromatic index of $G$, denoted as $χ'_{s}(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ has a strong $k$-edge-coloring. Lv, Li and Zhang [Graphs and Combinatorics 38 (3) (2022) 63] proved that if $G$ is a claw-free subcubic graph other than the triangular prism then $χ_s'(G)\le 8$. In addition, they asked if the upper bound $8$ can be improved to $7$. In this paper, we answer this question in the affirmative. Our proof implies a linear-time algorithm for finding strong $7$-edge-colorings of such graphs. We also construct infinitely many claw-free subcubic graphs with their strong chromatic indices attaining the bound $7$.
