Intersective sets over abelian groups
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 94 (2026), no. 1, Paper No. 19, 19pp • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite abelian group $G$ and a subset $J\subset G$ with $0\in J$, let $D_{G}(J,N)$ be the maximum size of $A\subset G^{N}$ such that the difference set $A-A$ and $J^{N}$ have no non-trivial intersection. Recently, this extremal problem has been widely studied for different groups $G$ and subsets $J$. In this paper, we generalize and improve the relevant results by Alon and by Hegedűs by building a bridge between this problem and cyclotomic polynomials with the help of algebraic graph theory. In particular, we construct infinitely many non-trivial families of $G$ and $J$ for which the current known upper bounds on $D_{G}(J, N)$ can be improved exponentially.

A note on multicolor Ramsey number of small odd cycles versus a large clique

Let $R_k(H;K_m)$ be the smallest number $N$ such that every coloring of the edges of $K_{N}$ with $k+1$ colors has either a monochromatic $H$ in color $i$ for some $1\leqslant i\leqslant k$, or a monochromatic $K_{m}$ in color $k+1$. In this short note, we study the lower bound for $R_k(H;K_m)$ when $H$ is $C_5$ or $C_7$, respectively. We show that \begin{equation*} R_{k}(C_5;K_m)=Ω(m^{\frac{3k}{8}+1}/(\log{m})^{\frac{3k}{8}+1}), \end{equation*} and \begin{equation*} R_{k}(C_7;K_m)=Ω(m^{\frac{2k}{9}+1}/(\log{m})^{\frac{2k}{9}+1}), \end{equation*} for fixed positive integer $k$ and $m\rightarrow\infty$. These slightly improve the previously known lower bound $R_{k}(C_{2\ell+1};K_m)=Ω(m^{\frac{k}{2\ell-1}+1}/(\log m)^{k+\frac{2k}{2\ell-1}})$ obtained by Alon and Rödl. The proof is based on random block constructions and random blowups argument.

A polynomial resultant approach to algebraic constructions of extremal graphs
Published in SCIENCE CHINA Mathematics, 2024+ • View PublicationBIB
The Turán problem asks for the largest number of edges ex$(n,H)$ in an $n$-vertex graph not containing a fixed forbidden subgraph $H$, which is one of the most important problems in extremal graph theory. However the order of magnitude of ex$(n,H)$ for bipartite graphs is known only in a handful of cases. In particular, giving explicit constructions of extremal graphs is very challenging in this field. In this paper, we develop a polynomail resultant approach to algebraic construction of explicit extremal graphs, which can efficiently decide whether a specified structure exists. A key insight in our approach is the multipolynomial resultant, which is a fundamental tool of computational algebraic geometry. Our main results include the matched lowers bounds for Turán number of $1$-subdivision of $K_{3,t_{1}}$ and linear Turán number of Berge theta hyerpgraph $Θ_{3,t_{2}}^{B}$ with $t_{1}=25$ and $t_{2}=217$. Moreover, the constant $t_{1}$ improves the random algebraic construction of Bukh and Conlon~[Rational exponents in extremal graph theory, J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018), 1747-1757] and makes progress on the known estimation for the smallest value of $t_{1}$ concerning a problem posed by Conlon, Janzer and Lee ~[More on the extremal number of subdivisions, Combinatorica, to appear], while the constant $t_{2}$ improves a result of He and Tait~[Hypergraphs with few berge paths of fixed length between vertices, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 33(3), 1472-1481].

On color isomorphic subdivisions

Given a graph $H$ and an integer $k\geqslant 2$, let $f_{k}(n,H)$ be the smallest number of colors $C$ such that there exists a proper edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_{n}$ with $C$ colors containing no $k$ vertex-disjoint color isomorphic copies of $H$. In this paper, we prove that $f_{2}(n,H_{t})=Ω(n^{1+\frac{1}{2t-3}})$ where $H_{t}$ is the $1$-subdivision of the complete graph $K_{t}$. This answers a question of Conlon and Tyomkyn (arXiv: 2002.00921).

Color isomorphic even cycles and a related Ramsey problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we first study a new extremal problem recently posed by Conlon and Tyomkyn~(arXiv: 2002.00921). Given a graph $H$ and an integer $k\geqslant 2$, let $f_{k}(n,H)$ be the smallest number of colors $c$ such that there exists a proper edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_{n}$ with $c$ colors containing no $k$ vertex-disjoint color-isomorphic copies of $H$. Using algebraic properties of polynomials over finite fields, we give an explicit proper edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ and show that $f_{k}(n, C_{4})=Θ(n)$ when $k\geqslant 3$ and $n\rightarrow\infty$. The methods we used in the edge-coloring may be of some independent interest. We also consider a related generalized Ramsey problem. For given graphs $G$ and $H,$ let $r(G,H,q)$ be the minimum number of edge-colors (not necessarily proper) of $G$, such that the edges of every copy of $H\subseteq G$ together receive at least $q$ distinct colors. Establishing the relation to the Turán number of specified bipartite graphs, we obtain some general lower bounds for $r(K_{n,n},K_{s,t},q)$ with a broad range of $q$.

On the Turán number of 1-subdivision of $K_{3,t}$
For a graph $H$, the 1-subdivision of $H$, denoted by $H'$, is the graph obtained by replacing the edges of $H$ by internally disjoint paths of length 2. Recently, Conlon, Janzer and Lee (arXiv: 1903.10631) asked the following question: For any integer $s\ge2$, estimate the smallest $t$ such that $\textup{ex}(n,K_{s,t}')=Ω(n^{\frac{3}{2}-\frac{1}{2s}})$. In this paper, we consider the case $s=3$. More precisely, we provide an explicit construction giving \begin{align*} \text{ex}(n,K_{3,30}')=Ω(n^{\frac{4}{3}}), \end{align*} which reduces the estimation for the smallest value of $t$ from a magnitude of $10^{56}$ to the number $30$. The construction is algebraic, which is based on some equations over finite fields.

3-uniform hypergraphs with few Berge paths of length three between any two vertices
Recently, Berge theta hypergraphs have received special attention due to the similarity with Berge even cycles. Let $r$-uniform Berge theta hypergraph $Θ_{\ell,t}^{B}$ be the $r$-uniform hypergraph consisting of $t$ internally disjoint Berge paths of length $\ell$ with the same pair of endpoints. In this work, we determine the Turán number of $3$-uniform Berge theta hypergraph when $\ell=3$ and $t$ is relatively small. More precisely, we provide an explicit construction giving \begin{align*} \textup{ex}_{3}(n,Θ_{3,217}^{B})=Ω(n^{\frac{4}{3}}). \end{align*} This matches an earlier upper bound by He and Tait up to an absolute constant factor. The construction is algebraic, which is based on some equations over finite fields, and the parameter $t$ in our construction is much smaller than that in random algebraic construction. Our main technique is using the resultant of polynomials, which appears to be a powerful technique to eliminate variables.

Some tight lower bounds for Turán problems via constructions of multi-hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, several hypergraph Turán problems were solved by the powerful random algebraic method. However, the random algebraic method usually requires some parameters to be very large, hence we are concerned about how these Turán numbers depend on such large parameters of the forbidden hypergraphs. In this paper, we determine the dependence on such specified large constant for several hypergraph Turán problems. More specifically, for complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs, we show that if $s_{r}$ is sufficiently larger than $s_{1},s_{2},\ldots,s_{r-1},$ then $$\textup{ex}_{r}(n,K_{s_{1},s_{2},\ldots,s_{r}}^{(r)})=Θ(s_{r}^{\frac{1}{s_{1}s_{2}\cdots s_{r-1}}}n^{r-\frac{1}{s_{1}s_{2}\cdots s_{r-1}}}).$$ For complete bipartite $r$-uniform hypergraphs, we prove that if $s$ is sufficiently larger than $t,$ we have $$\textup{ex}_{r}(n,K_{s,t}^{(r)})=Θ(s^{\frac{1}{t}}n^{r-\frac{1}{t}}).$$ In particular, our results imply that the famous Kővári--Sós--Turán's upper bound $\textup{ex}(n,K_{s,t})=O(t^{\frac{1}{s}}n^{2-\frac{1}{s}})$ has the correct dependence on large $t$. The main approach is to construct random multi-hypergraph via a variant of random algebraic method.

Some extremal results on hypergraph Turán problems
For two $r$-graphs $\mathcal{T}$ and $\mathcal{H}$, let $\text{ex}_{r}(n,\mathcal{T},\mathcal{H})$ be the maximum number of copies of $\mathcal{T}$ in an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free $r$-graph. The determination of Turán number $\text{ex}_{r}(n,\mathcal{T},\mathcal{H})$ has become the fundamental core problem in extremal graph theory ever since the pioneering work Turán's Theorem was published in $1941$. Although we have some rich results for the simple graph case, only sporadic results have been known for the hypergraph Turán problems. In this paper, we mainly focus on the function $\text{ex}_{r}(n,\mathcal{T},\mathcal{H})$ when $\mathcal{H}$ is one of two different hypergraph extensions of the complete bipartite graph $K_{s,t}$. The first extension is the complete bipartite $r$-graph $K_{s,t}^{(r)}$, which was introduced by Mubayi and Verstraëte~[J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 106: 237--253, 2004]. Using the powerful random algebraic method, we show that if $s$ is sufficiently larger than $t$, then \[\text{ex}_{r}(n,\mathcal{T},K_{s,t}^{(r)})=Ω(n^{v-\frac{e}{t}}),\] where $\mathcal{T}$ is an $r$-graph with $v$ vertices and $e$ edges. In particular, when $\mathcal{T}$ is an edge or some specified complete bipartite $r$-graph, we can determine their asymptotics. The second important extension is the complete $r$-partite $r$-graph $K_{s_{1},s_{2},\ldots,s_{r}}^{(r)}$, which has been widely studied. When $r=3$, we provide an explicit construction giving \[\text{ex}_{3}(n,K_{2,2,7}^{(3)})\geqslant\frac{1}{27}n^{\frac{19}{7}}+o(n^{\frac{19}{7}}).\] Our construction is based on the Norm graph, and improves the lower bound $Ω(n^{\frac{73}{27}})$ obtained by probabilistic method.

On vertex-induced weighted Turán problems
Recently, Bennett et al. introduced the vertex-induced weighted Turán problem. In this paper, we consider their open Turán problem under sum-edge-weight function and characterize the extremal structure of $K_{l}$-free graphs. Based on these results, we propose a generalized version of the Erdős-Stone theorem for weighted graphs under two types of vertex-induced weight functions.

New Theoretical Bounds and Constructions of Permutation Codes under Block Permutation Metric
Published • View PublicationBIB
Permutation codes under different metrics have been extensively studied due to their potentials in various applications. Generalized Cayley metric is introduced to correct generalized transposition errors, including previously studied metrics such as Kendall's $τ$-metric, Ulam metric and Cayley metric as special cases. Since the generalized Cayley distance between two permutations is not easily computable, Yang et al. introduced a related metric of the same order, named the block permutation metric. Given positive integers $n$ and $d$, let $\mathcal{C}_{B}(n,d)$ denote the maximum size of a permutation code in $S_n$ with minimum block permutation distance $d$. In this paper, we focus on the theoretical bounds of $\mathcal{C}_{B}(n,d)$ and the constructions of permutation codes under block permutation metric. Using a graph theoretic approach, we improve the Gilbert-Varshamov type bound by a factor of $Ω(\log{n})$, when $d$ is fixed and $n$ goes into infinity. We also propose a new encoding scheme based on binary constant weight codes. Moreover, an upper bound beating the sphere-packing type bound is given when $d$ is relatively close to $n$.
