A `nice' bijection for a content formula for skew semistandard Young tableaux
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 9 (2002), #R18 • View PublicationBIB
Based on Schützenberger's evacuation and a modification of jeu de taquin, we give a bijective proof of an identity connecting the generating function of reverse semistandard Young tableaux with bounded entries with the generating function of all semistandard Young tableaux. This solves Exercise 7.102 b of Richard Stanley's book `Enumerative Combinatorics 2'.

An exploration of the permanent-determinant method
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 5 (1998), #R46 • View PublicationBIB
The permanent-determinant method and its generalization, the Hafnian-Pfaffian method, are methods to enumerate perfect matchings of plane graphs that was discovered by P. W. Kasteleyn. We present several new techniques and arguments related to the permanent-determinant with consequences in enumerative combinatorics. Here are some of the results that follow from these techniques: 1. If a bipartite graph on the sphere with 4n vertices is invariant under the antipodal map, the number of matchings is the square of the number of matchings of the quotient graph. 2. The number of matchings of the edge graph of a graph with vertices of degree at most 3 is a power of 2. 3. The three Carlitz matrices whose determinants count a x b x c plane partitions all have the same cokernel. 4. Two symmetry classes of plane partitions can be enumerated with almost no calculation.

Polynomial Sequences of Binomial Type and Path Integrals
Published in Ann. of Combinatorics, 6(2002), no. 1, pp. 45-56. • View PublicationBIB
Polynomial sequences $p_n(x)$ of binomial type are a principal tool in the umbral calculus of enumerative combinatorics. We express $p_n(x)$ as a \emph{path integral} in the ``phase space'' $\Space{N}{} \times {[-π,π]}$. The Hamiltonian is $h(φ)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty p_n'(0)/n! e^{inφ}$ and it produces a Schrödinger type equation for $p_n(x)$. This establishes a bridge between enumerative combinatorics and quantum field theory. It also provides an algorithm for parallel quantum computations. Keywords: Feynman path integral, umbral calculus, polynomial sequence of binomial type, token, Schrödinger equation, propagator, wave function, cumulants, quantum computation.
