An obstacle to a decomposition theorem for near-regular matroids

Seymour's Decomposition Theorem for regular matroids states that any matroid representable over both GF(2) and GF(3) can be obtained from matroids that are graphic, cographic, or isomorphic to R10 by 1-, 2-, and 3-sums. It is hoped that similar characterizations hold for other classes of matroids, notably for the class of near-regular matroids. Suppose that all near-regular matroids can be obtained from matroids that belong to a few basic classes through k-sums. Also suppose that these basic classes are such that, whenever a class contains all graphic matroids, it does not contain all cographic matroids. We show that in that case 3-sums will not suffice.
Testing Linear-Invariant Non-Linear Properties

We consider the task of testing properties of Boolean functions that are invariant under linear transformations of the Boolean cube. Previous work in property testing, including the linearity test and the test for Reed-Muller codes, has mostly focused on such tasks for linear properties. The one exception is a test due to Green for "triangle freeness": a function $f:\cube^{n}\to\cube$ satisfies this property if $f(x),f(y),f(x+y)$ do not all equal 1, for any pair $x,y\in\cube^{n}$.
Here we extend this test to a more systematic study of testing for linear-invariant non-linear properties. We consider properties that are described by a single forbidden pattern (and its linear transformations), i.e., a property is given by $k$ points $v_{1},...,v_{k}\in\cube^{k}$ and $f:\cube^{n}\to\cube$ satisfies the property that if for all linear maps $L:\cube^{k}\to\cube^{n}$ it is the case that $f(L(v_{1})),...,f(L(v_{k}))$ do not all equal 1. We show that this property is testable if the underlying matroid specified by $v_{1},...,v_{k}$ is a graphic matroid. This extends Green's result to an infinite class of new properties.
Our techniques extend those of Green and in particular we establish a link between the notion of "1-complexity linear systems" of Green and Tao, and graphic matroids, to derive the results.
The toric ideal of a graphic matroid is generated by quadrics

Describing minimal generating sets of toric ideals is a well-studied and difficult problem. Neil White conjectured in 1980 that the toric ideal associated to a matroid is generated by quadrics corresponding to single element symmetric exchanges. We give a combinatorial proof of White's conjecture for graphic matroids.
Rigidity theory for matroids

Combinatorial rigidity theory seeks to describe the rigidity or flexibility of bar-joint frameworks in R^d in terms of the structure of the underlying graph G. The goal of this article is to broaden the foundations of combinatorial rigidity theory by replacing G with an arbitrary representable matroid M. The ideas of rigidity independence and parallel independence, as well as Laman's and Recski's combinatorial characterizations of 2-dimensional rigidity for graphs, can naturally be extended to this winder setting. As we explain, many of these fundamental concepts really depend only on the matroid associated with G (or its Tutte polynomial) and have little to do with the special nature of graphic matroids or the field R.
Our main result is a "nesting theorem" relating the various kinds of independence. Immediate corollaries include generalizations of Laman's Theorem, as well as the equality of 2-rigidity and 2-parallel independence. A key tool in our study is the space of photos of M, a natural algebraic variety whose irreducibility is closely related to the notions of rigidity independence and parallel independence.
The number of points on this variety, when working over a finite field, turns out to be an interesting Tutte polynomial evaluation.
Quadratic Orlik-Solomon algebras of graphic matroids

In this note we introduce a sufficient condition for the Orlik-Solomon algebra associated to a matroid M to be l-adic and we prove that this condition is necessary when M is binary (in particular graphic). Moreover, this result cannot be extended to the class of all matroids.
The critical group of a directed graph
The critical group K(G) of a directed graph G=(V,E) is the cokernel of the transpose of the Laplacian matrix of G acting on the integer lattice Z^V. For undirected graphs G, this has been considered by Bacher, de la Harpe, and Nagnibeda, and by Biggs. We prove several things, among which are: K(G/p) is a subgroup of K(G) when p is an equitable partition and G is strongly connected; for undirected graphs, the torsion subgroup of K(G) depends only on the graphic matroid of G; and, the `dollar game' of Biggs can be generalized to give a combinatorial interpretation for the elements of K(G), when G is strongly connected.
