The dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the least number $k$ such that the vertex set of $D$ can be partitioned into $k$ parts each of which induces an acyclic subdigraph. Introduced by Neumann-Lara in 1982, this digraph invariant shares many properties with the usual chromatic number of graphs and can be seen as the natural analog of the graph chromatic number. In this paper, we study the list dichromatic number of digraphs, giving evidence that this notion generalizes the list chromatic number of graphs. We first prove that the list dichromatic number and the dichromatic number behave the same in many contexts, such as in small digraphs (by proving a directed version of Ohba's Conjecture), tournaments, and random digraphs. We then consider bipartite digraphs, and show that their list dichromatic number can be as large as $Ω(\log_2 n)$. We finally give a Brooks-type upper bound on the list dichromatic number of digon-free digraphs.

The square $G^2$ of a graph $G$ is the graph defined on $V(G)$ such that two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent in $G^2$ if the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is at most 2. Let $χ(H)$ and $χ_{\ell}(H)$ be the chromatic number and the list chromatic number of $H$, respectively. A graph $H$ is called {\em chromatic-choosable} if $χ_{\ell} (H) = χ(H)$. It is an interesting problem to find graphs that are chromatic-choosable.
Motivated by the List Total Coloring Conjecture, Kostochka and Woodall (2001) proposed the List Square Coloring Conjecture which states that $G^2$ is chromatic-choosable for every graph $G$. Recently, Kim and Park showed that the List Square Coloring Conjecture does not hold in general by finding a family of graphs whose squares are complete multipartite graphs with partite sets of unbounded size. It is a well-known fact that the List Total Coloring Conjecture is true if the List Square Coloring Conjecture holds for special class of bipartite graphs. On the other hand, the counterexamples to the List Square Coloring Conjecture are not bipartite graphs. Hence a natural question is whether $G^2$ is chromatic-choosable or not for every bipartite graph $G$.
In this paper, we give a bipartite graph $G$ such that $χ_{\ell} (G^2) \neq χ(G^2)$. Moreover, we show that the value $χ_{\ell}(G^2) - χ(G^2)$ can be arbitrarily large.

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and let $\mathcal{L}_k$ be an arbitrary function that assigns each vertex in $G$ a list of $k$ colours. Then $G$ is $\mathcal{L}_k$-list colourable if there exists a proper colouring of the vertices of $G$ such that every vertex is coloured with a colour from its own list. We say $G$ is $k$-choosable if for every such function $\mathcal{L}_k$, $G$ is $\mathcal{L}_k$-list colourable. The minimum $k$ such that $G$ is $k$-choosable is called the list chromatic number of $G$ and is denoted by $χ_L(G)$. Let $χ_L(G) = s$ and let $t$ be a positive integer less than $s$. The partial list colouring conjecture due to Albertson et al. \cite{albertson2000partial} states that for every $\mathcal{L}_t$ that maps the vertices of $G$ to $t$-sized lists, there always exists an induced subgraph of $G$ of size at least $\frac{tn}{s}$ that is $\mathcal{L}_t$-list colourable. In this paper we show that the partial list colouring conjecture holds true for certain classes of graphs like claw-free graphs, graphs with large chromatic number, chordless graphs, and series-parallel graphs.
In the second part of the paper, we put forth a question which is a variant of the partial list colouring conjecture: does $G$ always contain an induced subgraph of size at least $\frac{tn}{s}$ that is $t$-choosable? We show that the answer to this question is not always `yes' by explicitly constructing an infinite family of $3$-choosable graphs where a largest induced $2$-choosable subgraph of each graph in the family is of size at most $\frac{5n}{8}$.

Cranston and Kim conjecture that if $G$ is a connected graph with maximum degree $Δ$ and $G$ is not a Moore Graph, then $χ_l(G^2) \le Δ^2-1$; here $χ_l$ is the list chromatic number. We prove their conjecture; in fact, this upper bound holds even for online list chromatic number.

The $k$th power $G^k$ of a graph $G$ is the graph defined on $V(G)$ such that two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent in $G^k$ if the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$ is at most $k$. Let $χ(H)$ and $χ_l(H)$ be the chromatic number and the list chromatic number of $H$, respectively. A graph $H$ is called {\em chromatic-choosable} if $χ_l (H) = χ(H)$. It is an interesting problem to find graphs that are chromatic-choosable. A natural question raised by Xuding Zhu (2012) is whether there exists a constant integer $k$ such that $G^k$ is chromatic-choosable for every graph $G$. Motivated by the List Total Coloring Conjecture, Kostochka and Woodall (2001) asked whether $G^2$ is chromatic-choosable for every graph $G$. Kim and Park (2013) answered the Kostochka and Woodall's question in the negative by finding a family of graphs whose squares are complete multipartite graphs with partite sets of equal and unbounded size. In this paper, we answer Zhu's question by showing that for every integer $k \geq 2$, there exists a graph $G$ such that $G^k$ is not chromatic-choosable. Moreover, for any fixed $k$ we show that the value $χ_l(G^k) - χ(G^k)$ can be arbitrarily large.

Let $\text{ch}(G)$ denote the choice number of a graph $G$ (also called "list chromatic number" or "choosability" of $G$). Noel, Reed, and Wu proved the conjecture of Ohba that $\text{ch}(G)=χ(G)$ when $|V(G)|\le 2χ(G)+1$. We extend this to a general upper bound: $\text{ch}(G)\le \max\{χ(G),\lceil({|V(G)|+χ(G)-1})/{3}\rceil\}$. Our result is sharp for $|V(G)|\le 3χ(G)$ using Ohba's examples, and it improves the best-known upper bound for $\text{ch}(K_{4,\dots,4})$.

We determine the list chromatic number of the square of a graph $\chil(G^2)$ in terms of its maximum degree $Δ$ when its maximum average degree, denoted $\mad(G)$, is sufficiently small. For $Δ\ge 6$, if $\mad(G)<2+\frac{4Δ-8}{5Δ+2}$, then $\chil(G^2)=Δ+1$. In particular, if $G$ is planar with girth $g\ge 7+\frac{12}{Δ-2}$, then $\chil(G^2)=Δ+1$. Under the same conditions, $\chil^i(G)=Δ$, where $\chil^i$ is the list injective chromatic number.

We study squares of planar graphs with the aim to determine their list chromatic number. We present new upper bounds for the square of a planar graph with maximum degree $Δ\leq 4$. In particular $G^2$ is 5-, 6-, 7-, 8-, 12-, 14-choosable if the girth of $G$ is at least 16, 11, 9, 7, 5, 3 respectively. In fact we prove more general results, in terms of maximum average degree, that imply the results above.

A triangle in a hypergraph is a collection of distinct vertices u,v,w and distinct edges e,f,g with u,v \in e, v,w \in f, w,u \in g, and \{u,v,w\} \cap e \cap f \cap g=\emptyset. The i-degree of a vertex in a hypergraph is the number of edges of size i containing it. We prove that every triangle-free hypergraph of rank three (edges have size two or three) with maximum 3-degree Δ_3 and maximum 2-degree Δ_2 has list chromatic number at most c max{Δ_2/ log{Δ_2}}, (Δ_3 / log{Δ_3})^(1/2)} for some absolute positive constant c. This generalizes a result of Johansson and a result of Frieze and the second author.
Hypergraph containers

We develop a notion of containment for independent sets in hypergraphs. For every $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$, we find a relatively small collection $C$ of vertex subsets, such that every independent set of $G$ is contained within a member of $C$, and no member of $C$ is large; the collection, which is in various respects optimal, reveals an underlying structure to the independent sets. The containers offer a straightforward and unified approach to many combinatorial questions concerned (usually implicitly) with independence.
With regard to colouring, it follows that simple $r$-uniform hypergraphs of average degree $d$ have list chromatic number at least $(1/(r-1)^2 + o(1)) \log_r d$. For $r = 2$ this improves a bound due to Alon and is tight. For $r \ge 3$, previous bounds were weak but the present inequality is close to optimal.
In the context of extremal graph theory, it follows that, for each $\ell$-uniform hypergraph $H$ of order $k$, there is a collection $C$ of $\ell$-uniform hypergraphs of order $n$ each with $o(n^k)$ copies of $H$, such that every $H$-free $\ell$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$ is a subgraph of a hypergraph in $C$, and $\log |C| \le c n^{\ell-1/m(H)} \log n$ where $m(H)$ is a standard parameter (there is a similar statement for induced subgraphs). This yields simple proofs, for example, for the number of $H$-free hypergraphs, and for the sparsity theorems of Conlon-Gowers and Schacht. A slight variant yields a counting version of the KŁR conjecture.
Likewise, for systems of linear equations the containers supply, for example, bounds on the number of solution-free sets, and the existence of solutions in sparse random subsets.
Balogh, Morris and Samotij have independently obtained related results.

We study the linear list chromatic number, denoted $\lcl(G)$, of sparse graphs. The maximum average degree of a graph $G$, denoted $\mad(G)$, is the maximum of the average degrees of all subgraphs of $G$. It is clear that any graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)$ satisfies $\lcl(G)\ge \ceil{Δ(G)/2}+1$. In this paper, we prove the following results: (1) if $\mad(G)<12/5$ and $Δ(G)\ge 3$, then $\lcl(G)=\ceil{Δ(G)/2}+1$, and we give an infinite family of examples to show that this result is best possible; (2) if $\mad(G)<3$ and $Δ(G)\ge 9$, then $\lcl(G)\le\ceil{Δ(G)/2}+2$, and we give an infinite family of examples to show that the bound on $\mad(G)$ cannot be increased in general; (3) if $G$ is planar and has girth at least 5, then $\lcl(G)\le\ceil{Δ(G)/2}+4$.

A dynamic coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper coloring such that for every vertex $v\in V(G)$ of degree at least 2, the neighbors of $v$ receive at least 2 colors. In this paper we present some upper bounds for the dynamic chromatic number of graphs. In this regard, we shall show that there is a constant $c$ such that for every $k$-regular graph $G$, $χ_d(G)\leq χ(G)+ c\ln k +1$. Also, we introduce an upper bound for the dynamic list chromatic number of regular graphs.

In 1977, Wegner conjectured that the chromatic number of the square of every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ\ge8$ is at most $\bigl\lfloor\frac32Δ\bigr\rfloor+1$. We show that it is at most $\frac32 Δ(1+o(1))$ (where the $o(1)$ is as $Δ\to+\infty$), and indeed that this is true for the list chromatic number and for more general classes of graphs.
A Note on Partial List Colorings
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and list chromatic number $χ_\ell(G)=χ_\ell$. Suppose that $0\leq t\leq χ_\ell$ and each vertex of $G$ is assigned a list of $t$ colors. Albertson, Grossman and Haas [1] conjectured that at least $\frac{tn}{χ_\ell}$ vertices of $G$ can be colored from these lists. In this paper we find some new results in partial list coloring which help us to show that the conjecture is true for at least half of the numbers of the set $\{1,2,...,χ_\ell(G)-1\}$. In addition we introduce a new related conjecture and finally we present some results about this conjecture.
When is ch(K(m,n))=m-1?
Let n_m be the smallest integer n such that ch(K_{m,n}) = m-1, where ch(G) denotes the choice (list chromatic) number of the graph G. We prove that there is an infinite sequence of integers S, such that if m is in S, then n_m <= 0.4643 ((m-2)^(m-2)). If m -> infinity, then n_m is asymptotically at most 0.474 ((m-2)^(m-2)).

Ohba has conjectured \cite{ohb} that if the graph $G$ has $2χ(G)+1$ or fewer vertices then the list chromatic number and chromatic number of $G$ are equal. In this paper we prove that this conjecture is asymptotically correct. More precisely we obtain that for any $0<ε<1$, there exist an $n_0=n_0(ε)$ such that the list chromatic number of $G$ equals its chromatic number, provided $$n_0 \leq |V(G) | \le (2-ε)χ(G).$$

A graph is called to be uniquely list colorable, if it admits a list assignment which induces a unique list coloring. We study uniquely list colorable graphs with a restriction on the number of colors used. In this way we generalize a theorem which characterizes uniquely 2-list colorable graphs. We introduce the uniquely list chromatic number of a graph and make a conjecture about it which is a generalization of the well known Brooks' theorem.
