Counting homomorphisms in antiferromagnetic graphs via Lorentzian polynomials
An edge-weighted graph $G$, possibly with loops, is said to be antiferromagnetic if it has nonnegative weights and at most one positive eigenvalue, counting multiplicities. The number of graph homomorphisms from a graph $H$ to an antiferromagnetic graph $G$ generalises various important parameters in graph theory, including the number of independent sets and proper vertex-colourings, as well as their relaxations in statistical physics. We obtain homomorphism inequalities for various graphs $H$ and antiferromagnetic graphs~$G$ of the form \[ \lvert\operatorname{Hom}(H,G)\rvert^2 \leq \lvert\operatorname{Hom}(H\times K_2,G)\rvert, \] where $H\times K_2$ denotes the tensor product of $H$ and $K_2$. Firstly, we show that the inequality holds for any $H$ obtained by blowing up vertices of a bipartite graph into complete graphs and any antiferromagnetic $G$. In particular, one can take $H=K_{d+1}$, which already implies a new result for the Sah--Sawhney--Stoner--Zhao conjecture on the maximum number of $d$-regular graphs in antiferromagnetic graphs. Secondly, the inequality also holds for $G=K_q$ and those $H$ obtained by blowing up vertices of a bipartite graph into complete multipartite graphs, paths or even cycles. Both results can be seen as the first progress towards Zhao's conjecture on $q$-colourings, which states that the inequality holds for any $H$ and $G=K_q$, after his own work. Our method leverages on the emerging theory of Lorentzian polynomials due to Brändén and Huh and log-concavity of the list colourings of bipartite graphs, which may be of independent interest.
Reconfiguration of List Colourings
Given a proper (list) colouring of a graph $G$, a recolouring step changes the colour at a single vertex to another colour (in its list) that is currently unused on its neighbours, hence maintaining a proper colouring. Suppose that each vertex $v$ has its own private list $L(v)$ of allowed colours such that $|L(v)|\ge \mbox{deg}(v)+1$. We prove that if $G$ is connected and its maximum degree $Δ$ is at least $3$, then for any two proper $L$-colourings in which at least one vertex can be recoloured, one can be transformed to the other by a sequence of $O(|V(G)|^2)$ recolouring steps. We also show that reducing the list-size of a single vertex $w$ to $\mbox{deg}(w)$ can lead to situations where the space of proper $L$-colourings is `shattered'. Our results can be interpreted as showing a sharp phase transition in the Glauber dynamics of proper $L$-colourings of graphs. This constitutes a `local' strengthening and generalisation of a result of Feghali, Johnson, and Paulusma, which considered the situation where the lists are all identical to $\{1,\ldots,Δ+1\}$.
Indicated list colouring game on graphs
Given a graph $G$ and a list assignment $L$ for $G$, the indicated $L$-colouring game on $G$ is played by two players: Ann and Ben. In each round, Ann chooses an uncoloured vertex $v$, and Ben colours $v$ with a colour from $L(v)$ that is not used by its coloured neighbours. If all vertices are coloured, then Ann wins the game. Otherwise after a finite number of rounds, there remains an uncoloured vertex $v$ such that all colours in $L(v)$ have been used by its coloured neighbours, Ben wins. We say $G$ is indicated $L$-colourable if Ann has a winning strategy for the indicated $L$-colouring game on $G$. For a mapping $g: V(G) \to \mathbb{N}$, we say $G$ is indicated $g$-choosable if $G$ is indicated $L$-colourable for every list assignment $L$ with $|L(v)| \ge g(v)$ for each vertex $v$, and $G$ is indicated degree-choosable if $G$ is indicated $g$-choosable for $g(v) =d_G(v)$ (the degree of $v$). This paper proves that a graph $G$ is not indicated degree-choosable if and only if $G$ is an expanded Gallai-tree - a graph whose maximal connected induced subgraphs with no clique-cut are complete graphs or blow-ups of odd cycles, along with a technical condition (see Definition \ref{def-egt}). This leads to a linear-time algorithm that determines if a graph is indicated degree-choosable. A connected graph $G$ is called an IC-Brooks graph if its indicated chromatic number equals $Δ(G)+1$. Every IC-Brooks graph is a regular expanded Gallai-tree. We show that if $r \le 3$, then every $r$-regular expanded Gallai-tree is an IC-Brooks graph. For $r \ge 4$, there are $r$-regular expanded Gallai-trees that are not IC-Brooks graphs. We give a characterization of IC-Brooks graphs, and present a linear-time algorithm that determines if a given graph of bounded maximum degree is an IC-Brooks graph.
Acyclic List Colouring Locally Planar Graphs
A (vertex) colouring of graph is \emph{acyclic} if it contains no bicoloured cycle. In 1979, Borodin proved that planar graphs are acyclically 5-colourable. In 2010, Kawarabayashi and Mohar proved that locally planar graphs are acyclically 7-colourable. In 2002, Borodin, Fon-Der-Flaass, Kostochka, Raspaud, and Sopena proved that planar graphs are acyclically 7-list-colourable. We prove that locally planar graphs are acyclically 9-list-colourable\textemdash no bound for acyclic list colouring locally planar graphs for any fixed number of colours was previously known.

Fractional list packing for layered graphs
The fractional list packing number $χ_{\ell}^{\bullet}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a graph invariant that has recently arisen from the study of disjoint list-colourings. It measures how large the lists of a list-assignment $L:V(G)\rightarrow 2^{\mathbb{N}}$ need to be to ensure the existence of a `perfectly balanced' probability distribution on proper $L$-colourings, i.e., such that at every vertex $v$, every colour appears with equal probability $1/|L(v)|$. In this work we give various bounds on $χ_{\ell}^{\bullet}(G)$, which admit strengthenings for correspondence and local-degree versions. As a corollary, we improve theorems on the related notion of flexible list colouring. In particular we study Cartesian products and $d$-degenerate graphs, and we prove that $χ_{\ell}^{\bullet}(G)$ is bounded from above by the pathwidth of $G$ plus one. The correspondence analogue of the latter is false for treewidth instead of pathwidth.

3-Coloring $C_4$ or $C_3$-free Diameter Two Graphs
The question of whether 3-Coloring can be solved in polynomial-time for the diameter two graphs is a well-known open problem in the area of algorithmic graph theory. We study the problem restricted to graph classes that avoid cycles of given lengths as induced subgraphs. Martin et. al. [CIAC 2021] showed that the problem is polynomial-time solvable for $C_5$-free or $C_6$-free graphs, and, $(C_4,C_s)$-free graphs where $s \in \{3,7,8,9\}$. We extend their result proving that it is polynomial-time solvable for $(C_4,C_s)$-free graphs, for any constant $s$, and for $(C_3,C_7)$-free graphs. Our results also hold for the more general problem List 3-Colouring.

Breaking small automorphisms by list colourings
For a graph G, we define a small automorphism as one that maps some vertex into its neighbour. We investigate the edge colourings of G that break every small automorphism of G. We show that such a colouring can be chosen from any set of lists of length three. In addition, we show that any set of lists of length two on both edges and vertices of G yields a total colouring which breaks all the small automorphisms of $G$. These results are sharp and they match the non-list variants.

The polynomial method for 3-path extendability of list colourings of planar graphs
We restate Thomassen's theorem of 3-extendability, an extension of the famous planar 5-choosability theorem, in terms of graph polynomials. This yields an Alon--Tarsi equivalent of 3-extendability.

Hyperbolicity Theorems for Correspondence Colouring
We generalize a framework of list colouring results to correspondence colouring. Correspondence colouring is a generalization of list colouring wherein we localize the meaning of the colours available to each vertex. As pointed out by Dvořák and Postle, both of Thomassen's theorems on the 5-choosability of planar graphs and 3-choosability of planar graphs of girth at least five carry over to the correspondence colouring setting. In this paper, we show that the family of graphs that are critical for 5-correspondence colouring as well as the family of graphs of girth at least five that are critical for 3-correspondence colouring form hyperbolic families. Analogous results for list colouring were shown by Postle and Thomas and by Dvořák and Kawarabayashi, respectively. Using results on hyperbolic families due to Postle and Thomas, we show further that this implies that locally planar graphs are 5-correspondence colourable; and, using results of Dvořák and Kawarabayashi, that there exist linear-time algorithms for the decidability of 5-correspondence colouring for embedded graphs. We show analogous results for 3-correspondence colouring graphs of girth at least five.

Refined list version of Hadwiger's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Assume $λ=\{k_1,k_2, \ldots, k_q\}$ is a partition of $k_λ = \sum_{i=1}^q k_i$. A $λ$-list assignment of $G$ is a $k_λ$-list assignment $L$ of $G$ such that the colour set $\bigcup_{v \in V(G)}L(v)$ can be partitioned into $|λ|= q$ sets $C_1,C_2,\ldots,C_q$ such that for each $i$ and each vertex $v$ of $G$, $|L(v) \cap C_i| \ge k_i$. We say $G$ is \emph{$λ$-choosable} if $G$ is $L$-colourable for any $λ$-list assignment $L$ of $G$. The concept of $λ$-choosability is a refinement of choosability that puts $k$-choosability and $k$-colourability in the same framework. If $|λ|$ is close to $k_λ$, then $λ$-choosability is close to $k_λ$-colourability; if $|λ|$ is close to $1$, then $λ$-choosability is close to $k_λ$-choosability. This paper studies Hadwiger's Conjecture in the context of $λ$-choosability. Hadwiger's Conjecture is equivalent to saying that every $K_t$-minor-free graph is $\{1 \star (t-1)\}$-choosable for any positive integer $t$. We prove that for $t \ge 5$, for any partition $λ$ of $t-1$ other than $\{1 \star (t-1)\}$, there is a $K_t$-minor-free graph $G$ that is not $λ$-choosable. We then construct several types of $K_t$-minor-free graphs that are not $λ$-choosable, where $k_λ- (t-1)$ gets larger as $k_λ-|λ|$ gets larger. In partcular, for any $q$ and any $ε> 0$, there exists $t_0$ such that for any $t \ge t_0$, for any partition $λ$ of $\lfloor (2-ε)t \rfloor$ with $|λ| =q$, there is a $K_t$-minor-free graph that is not $λ$-choosable. The $q=1$ case of this result was recently proved by Steiner, and our proof uses a similar argument. We also generalize this result to $(a,b)$-list colouring.

Decomposition of triangle-free planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A decomposition of a graph $G$ is a family of subgraphs of $G$ whose edge sets form a partition of $E(G)$. In this paper, we prove that every triangle-free planar graph $G$ can be decomposed into a $2$-degenerate graph and a matching. Consequently, every triangle-free planar graph $G$ has a matching $M$ such that $G-M$ is online 3-DP-colorable. This strengthens an earlier result in [R. Škrekovski, {\em A Grötzsch-Type Theorem for List Colourings with Impropriety One}, Combin. Prob. Comput. 8 (1999), 493-507] that every triangle-free planar graph is $1$-defective $3$-choosable.
Optimally Reconfiguring List and Correspondence Colourings
Published in European J. Combinatorics, Volume 115, January 2024, 103798 • View PublicationBIB
The reconfiguration graph $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ for the $k$-colourings of a graph $G$ has a vertex for each proper $k$-colouring of $G$, and two vertices of $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ are adjacent precisely when those $k$-colourings differ on a single vertex of $G$. Much work has focused on bounding the maximum value of ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ over all $n$-vertex graphs $G$. We consider the analogous problems for list colourings and for correspondence colourings. We conjecture that if $L$ is a list-assignment for a graph $G$ with $|L(v)|\ge d(v)+2$ for all $v\in V(G)$, then ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_L(G)\le n(G)+μ(G)$. We also conjecture that if $(L,H)$ is a correspondence cover for a graph $G$ with $|L(v)|\ge d(v)+2$ for all $v\in V(G)$, then ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_{(L,H)}(G)\le n(G)+τ(G)$. (Here $μ(G)$ and $τ(G)$ denote the matching number and vertex cover number of $G$.) For every graph $G$, we give constructions showing that both conjectures are best possible. Our first main result proves the upper bounds (for the list and correspondence versions, respectively) ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_L(G)\le n(G)+2μ(G)$ and ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_{(L,H)}(G)\le n(G)+2τ(G)$. Our second main result proves that both conjectured bounds hold, whenever all $v$ satisfy $|L(v)|\ge 2d(v)+1$. We conclude by proving one or both conjectures for various classes of graphs such as complete bipartite graphs, subcubic graphs, cactuses, and graphs with bounded maximum average degree.

List $4$-colouring of planar graphs

This paper proves the following result: If $G$ is a planar graph and $L$ is a $4$-list assignment of $G$ such that $|L(x) \cap L(y)| \le 2$ for every edge $xy$, then $G$ is $L$-colourable. This answers a question asked by Kratochvíl, Tuza and Voigt in [Journal of Graph Theory, 27(1):43--49, 1998].
Packing list-colourings
Published • View PublicationBIB
List colouring is an influential and classic topic in graph theory. We initiate the study of a natural strengthening of this problem, where instead of one list-colouring, we seek many in parallel. Our explorations have uncovered a potentially rich seam of interesting problems spanning chromatic graph theory. Given a $k$-list-assignment $L$ of a graph $G$, which is the assignment of a list $L(v)$ of $k$ colours to each vertex $v\in V(G)$, we study the existence of $k$ pairwise-disjoint proper colourings of $G$ using colours from these lists. We may refer to this as a \emph{list-packing}. Using a mix of combinatorial and probabilistic methods, we set out some basic upper bounds on the smallest $k$ for which such a list-packing is always guaranteed, in terms of the number of vertices, the degeneracy, the maximum degree, or the (list) chromatic number of $G$. (The reader might already find it interesting that such a minimal $k$ is well defined.) We also pursue a more focused study of the case when $G$ is a bipartite graph. Our results do not yet rule out the tantalising prospect that the minimal $k$ above is not too much larger than the list chromatic number. Our study has taken inspiration from study of the strong chromatic number, and we also explore generalisations of the problem above in the same spirit.

The strong fractional choice number and the strong fractional paint number of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the strong fractional choice number $ch^s_f(G)$ and the strong fractional paint number $χ^s_{f,P}(G)$ of a graph $G$. We prove that these parameters of any finite graph are rational numbers. On the other hand, for any positive integers $p,q$ satisfying $2 \le \frac{2p}{2q+1} \leq \lfloor\frac{p}{q}\rfloor$, there exists a graph $G$ with $ch^s_f(G) = χ^s_{f,P}(G) = \frac{p}{q}$. The relationship between $χ^s_{f,P}(G)$ and $ch^s_f(G)$ is explored. We prove that the gap $χ^s_{f,P}(G)-ch^s_f(G)$ can be arbitrarily large. The strong fractional choice number of a family $\mathcal{G}$ of graphs is the supremum of the strong fractional choice number of graphs in $\mathcal{G}$. Let $\mathcal{P}$ denote the class of planar graphs and $\mathcal{P}_{k_1,\ldots, k_q}$ denote the class of planar graphs without $k_i$-cycles for $i=1,\ldots, q$. We prove that $3 + \frac{1}{2} \leq ch^s_f(\mathcal{P}_{ 4}) \leq 4$, $ch^s_f(\mathcal{P}_{ k})=4$ for $k \in \{5,6\}$, $3 +\frac{1}{12} \leq ch^s_f(\mathcal{P}_{ 4,5}) \leq 4$ and $ch^s_f(\mathcal{P}) \ge 4+\frac 13$. The last result improves the lower bound $4+\frac 29$ in [X. Zhu, multiple list colouring of planar graphs, Journal of Combin. Th. Ser. B,122(2017),794-799].

Local girth choosability of planar graphs
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2022:8, 38pp • View PublicationBIB
In 1994, Thomassen famously proved that every planar graph is 5-choosable, resolving a conjecture initially posed by Vizing and, independently, Erd\H{os}, Rubin, and Taylor in the 1970s. Later, Thomassen proved that every planar graph of girth at least five is 3-choosable. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a \emph{local girth list assignment}: a list assignment wherein the list size of a vertex depends not on the girth of the graph, but rather on the length of the shortest cycle in which the vertex is contained. We give a local list colouring theorem unifying the two theorems of Thomassen mentioned above. In particular, we show that if $G$ is a planar graph and $L$ is a list assignment for $G$ such that $|L(v)| \geq 3$ for all $v \in V(G)$; $|L(v)| \geq 4$ for every vertex $v$ contained in a 4-cycle; and $|L(v)| \geq 5$ for every $v$ contained in a triangle, then $G$ admits an $L$-colouring.

Adaptable and conflict colouring multigraphs with no cycles of length three or four
Published • View PublicationBIB
The adaptable choosability of a multigraph $G$, denoted $\mathrm{ch}_a(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that any edge labelling, $τ$, of $G$ and any assignment of lists of size $k$ to the vertices of $G$ permits a list colouring, $σ$, of $G$ such that there is no edge $e = uv$ where $τ(e) = σ(u) = σ(v)$. Here we show that for a multigraph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$ and no cycles of length 3 or 4, $\mathrm{ch}_a(G) \leq (2\sqrt{2}+o(1))\sqrt{Δ/\lnΔ}$. Under natural restrictions we can show that the same bound holds for the conflict choosability of $G$, which is a closely related parameter defined by Dvořák, Esperet, Kang and Ozeki [arXiv:1803.10962].

Colouring Graphs of Bounded Diameter in the Absence of Small Cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $k\geq 1$, a $k$-colouring $c$ of $G$ is a mapping from $V(G)$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$ such that $c(u)\neq c(v)$ for any two non-adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$. The $k$-Colouring problem is to decide if a graph $G$ has a $k$-colouring. For a family of graphs ${\cal H}$, a graph $G$ is ${\cal H}$-free if $G$ does not contain any graph from ${\cal H}$ as an induced subgraph. Let $C_s$ be the $s$-vertex cycle. In previous work (MFCS 2019) we examined the effect of bounding the diameter on the complexity of $3$-Colouring for $(C_3,\ldots,C_s)$-free graphs and $H$-free graphs where $H$ is some polyad. Here, we prove for certain small values of $s$ that $3$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for $C_s$-free graphs of diameter $2$ and $(C_4,C_s)$-free graphs of diameter $2$. In fact, our results hold for the more general problem List $3$-Colouring. We complement these results with some hardness result for diameter $4$.
Solving Problems on Generalized Convex Graphs via Mim-Width
Published in Journal of Computer and System Sciences, 140:103493, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
A bipartite graph $G=(A,B,E)$ is ${\cal H}$-convex, for some family of graphs ${\cal H}$, if there exists a graph $H\in {\cal H}$ with $V(H)=A$ such that the set of neighbours in $A$ of each $b\in B$ induces a connected subgraph of $H$. Many $\mathsf{NP}$-complete problems, including problems such as Dominating Set, Feedback Vertex Set, Induced Matching and List $k$-Colouring, become polynomial-time solvable for ${\mathcal H}$-convex graphs when ${\mathcal H}$ is the set of paths. In this case, the class of ${\mathcal H}$-convex graphs is known as the class of convex graphs. The underlying reason is that the class of convex graphs has bounded mim-width. We extend the latter result to families of ${\mathcal H}$-convex graphs where (i) ${\mathcal H}$ is the set of cycles, or (ii) ${\mathcal H}$ is the set of trees with bounded maximum degree and a bounded number of vertices of degree at least $3$. As a consequence, we can re-prove and strengthen a large number of results on generalized convex graphs known in the literature. To complement result (ii), we show that the mim-width of ${\mathcal H}$-convex graphs is unbounded if ${\mathcal H}$ is the set of trees with arbitrarily large maximum degree or an arbitrarily large number of vertices of degree at least $3$. In this way we are able to determine complexity dichotomies for the aforementioned graph problems. Afterwards we perform a more refined width-parameter analysis, which shows even more clearly which width parameters are bounded for classes of ${\cal H}$-convex graphs.

An Improved Bound for the Linear Arboricity Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1980, Akiyama, Exoo and Harary posited the Linear Arboricity Conjecture which states that any graph $G$ of maximum degree $Δ$ can be decomposed into at most $\left\lceil \fracΔ{2}\right\rceil$ linear forests. (A forest is linear if all of its components are paths.) In 1988, Alon proved the conjecture holds asymptotically. The current best bound is due to Ferber, Fox and Jain from 2020 who showed that $\fracΔ{2}+ O(Δ^{.661})$ suffices for large enough $Δ$. Here, we show that $G$ admits a decomposition into at most $\fracΔ{2}+ 3\sqrtΔ \log^4 Δ$ linear forests provided $Δ$ is large enough. Moreover, our result also holds in the more general list setting, where edges have (possibly different) sets of permissible linear forests. Thus our bound also holds for the List Linear Arboricity Conjecture which was only recently shown to hold asymptotically by Kim and the second author. Indeed, our proof method ties together the Linear Arboricity Conjecture and the well-known List Colouring Conjecture; consequently, our error term for the Linear Arboricity Conjecture matches the best known error-term for the List Colouring Conjecture due to Molloy and Reed from 2000. This follows as we make two copies of every colour and then seek a proper edge colouring where we avoid bicoloured cycles between a colour and its copy; we achieve this via a clever modification of the nibble method.
