Local Weak Degeneracy of Planar Graphs
Thomassen showed that planar graphs are 5-list-colourable, and that planar graphs of girth at least five are 3-list-colourable. An easy degeneracy argument shows that planar graphs of girth at least four are 4-list-colourable. In 2022, Postle and Smith-Roberge proved a common strengthening of these three results: with $g(v)$ denoting the length of a shortest cycle containing a vertex $v$, they showed that if $G$ is a planar graph and $L$ a list assignment for $G$ where $|L(v)| \geq \max\{3,8-g(v)\}$ for all $v \in V(G)$, then $G$ is $L$-colourable. Moreover, they conjectured that an analogous theorem should hold for correspondence colouring. We prove this conjecture; in fact, our main theorem holds in the still more restrictive setting of weak degeneracy, and moreover acts as a joint strengthening of the fact that planar graphs are weakly 4-degenerate (originally due to Bernshteyn, Lee, and Smith-Roberge), and that planar graphs of girth at least five are weakly 2-degenerate (originally due to Han et al.).
Flow-critical graphs
Lovász et al. proved that every $6$-edge-connected graph has a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. In fact, they proved a more technical statement which says that there exists a nowhere zero $3$-flow that extends the flow prescribed on the incident edges of a single vertex $z$ with bounded degree. We extend this theorem of Lovász et al. to allow $z$ to have arbitrary degree, but with the additional assumption that there is another vertex $x$ with large degree and no small cut separating $x$ and $z$. Using this theorem, we prove two results regarding the generation of minimal graphs with the property that prescribing the edges incident to a vertex with specific flow does not extend to a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. We use this to further strengthen the theorem of Lovász et al., as well as make progress on a conjecture of Li et al.
Acyclic List Colouring Locally Planar Graphs
A (vertex) colouring of graph is \emph{acyclic} if it contains no bicoloured cycle. In 1979, Borodin proved that planar graphs are acyclically 5-colourable. In 2010, Kawarabayashi and Mohar proved that locally planar graphs are acyclically 7-colourable. In 2002, Borodin, Fon-Der-Flaass, Kostochka, Raspaud, and Sopena proved that planar graphs are acyclically 7-list-colourable. We prove that locally planar graphs are acyclically 9-list-colourable\textemdash no bound for acyclic list colouring locally planar graphs for any fixed number of colours was previously known.
Maximum $k$-colourable induced subgraphs in $(P_5+rK_1)$-free graphs
We show that for any nonnegative integer $r$, the Weighted Maximum List-$k$-Colourable Induced Subgraph problem can be solved in polynomial time for input graphs that do not contain $(P_5+ rK_1)$ as an induced subgraph, and give an explicit algorithm demonstrating this. This answers a question of Agrawal et al.\ (2024).
Weak Degeneracy of Planar Graphs
The weak degeneracy of a graph $G$ is a numerical parameter that was recently introduced by the first two authors with the aim of understanding the power of greedy algorithms for graph coloring. Every $d$-degenerate graph is weakly $d$-degenerate, but the converse is not true in general (for example, all connected $d$-regular graphs except cycles and cliques are weakly $(d-1)$-degenerate). If $G$ is weakly $d$-degenerate, then the list-chromatic number of $G$ is at most $d+1$, and the same upper bound holds for various other parameters such as the DP-chromatic number and the paint number. Here we rectify a mistake in a paper of the first two authors and give a correct proof that planar graphs are weakly $4$-degenerate, strengthening the famous result of Thomassen that planar graphs are $5$-list-colorable.

List Packing and Correspondence Packing of Planar Graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory. Vol. 109(3), July 2025, pp. 339-352 • Search Publication
For a graph $G$ and a list assignment $L$ with $|L(v)|=k$ for all $v$, an $L$-packing consists of $L$-colorings $\varphi_1,\cdots,\varphi_k$ such that $\varphi_i(v)\ne\varphi_j(v)$ for all $v$ and all distinct $i,j\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$. Let $χ^{\star}_{\ell}(G)$ denote the smallest $k$ such that $G$ has an $L$-packing for every $L$ with $|L(v)|=k$ for all $v$. Let $\mathcal{P}_k$ denote the set of all planar graphs with girth at least $k$. We show that (i) $χ^{\star}_{\ell}(G)\le 8$ for all $G\in \mathcal{P}_3$ and (ii) $χ^{\star}_{\ell}(G)\le 5$ for all $G\in \mathcal{P}_4$ and (iii) $χ^{\star}_{\ell}(G)\le 4$ for all $G\in \mathcal{P}_5$. Part (i) makes progress on a problem of Cambie, Cames van Batenburg, Davies, and Kang. We also construct outerplanar graphs $G$ such that $χ^{\star}_{\ell}(G)=4$, which matches the known upper bound $χ^{\star}_{\ell}(G)\le 4$ for all outerplanar graphs. Finally, we consider the analogue of $χ^{\star}_{\ell}$ for correspondence coloring, $χ^{\star}_c$. In fact, all bounds stated above for $χ^{\star}_{\ell}$ also hold for $χ^{\star}_c$.
Beyond the Pseudoforest Strong Nine Dragon Tree Theorem
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 2025 • Search Publication
The pseudoforest version of the Strong Nine Dragon Tree Conjecture states that if a graph $G$ has maximum average degree $\text{mad}(G) = 2 \max_{H \subseteq G} \frac{e(G)}{v(G)}$ at most $2(k + \frac{d}{k+d+1})$, then it has a decomposition into $k+1$ pseudoforests where in one pseudoforest $F$ the components of $F$ have at most $d$ edges. This was proven in 2020. We strengthen this theorem by showing that we can find such a decomposition where additionally $F$ is acyclic, the diameter of the components of $F$ is at most $2\ell + 2$, where $\ell = \lfloor\frac{d-1}{k+1} \rfloor$, and at most $2\ell + 1$ if $d \equiv 1 \bmod k+1$. Furthermore, for any component $K$ of $F$ and any $z \in \mathbb N$, we have $diam(K) \leq 2z$ if $e(K) \geq d - z(k-1) + 1$. We also show that both diameter bounds are best possible as an extension for both the Strong Nine Dragon Tree Conjecture for pseudoforests and its original conjecture for forests. In fact, they are still optimal even if we only enforce $F$ to have any constant maximum degree, instead of enforcing every component of $F$ to have at most $d$ edges.

Exponentially Many Correspondence Colourings of Planar and Locally Planar Graphs
We show that there exists a constant $c > 0$ such that if $G$ is a planar graph with 5-correspondence assignment $(L,M)$, then $G$ has at least $2^{c\cdot v(G)}$ distinct $(L,M)$-colourings. This confirms a conjecture of Langhede and Thomassen. More broadly, we introduce a general method showing how hyperbolicity theorems for certain families of critical graphs can be used to derive lower bounds on the number of colourings of the associated class of planar graphs. Hence our main result follows from this method plus a technical theorem (that we proved in a previous paper) involving the hyperbolicity of graphs critical for $5$-correspondence colouring. We further demonstrate our method in the case of counting 3-correspondence colourings of planar graphs of girth at least five. Finally, we use these theorems to show analogous results hold in the case of counting 5-correspondence colourings of locally planar graphs, and counting 3-correspondence colourings of locally planar graphs of girth at least five.

Hyperbolicity Theorems for Correspondence Colouring
We generalize a framework of list colouring results to correspondence colouring. Correspondence colouring is a generalization of list colouring wherein we localize the meaning of the colours available to each vertex. As pointed out by Dvořák and Postle, both of Thomassen's theorems on the 5-choosability of planar graphs and 3-choosability of planar graphs of girth at least five carry over to the correspondence colouring setting. In this paper, we show that the family of graphs that are critical for 5-correspondence colouring as well as the family of graphs of girth at least five that are critical for 3-correspondence colouring form hyperbolic families. Analogous results for list colouring were shown by Postle and Thomas and by Dvořák and Kawarabayashi, respectively. Using results on hyperbolic families due to Postle and Thomas, we show further that this implies that locally planar graphs are 5-correspondence colourable; and, using results of Dvořák and Kawarabayashi, that there exist linear-time algorithms for the decidability of 5-correspondence colouring for embedded graphs. We show analogous results for 3-correspondence colouring graphs of girth at least five.

On the choosability with separation of planar graphs and its correspondence colouring analogue
A list assignment $L$ for a graph $G$ is an $(\ell,k)$-list assignment if $|L(v)|\geq \ell$ for each $v \in V(G)$ and $|L(u) \cap L(v)| \leq k$ for each $uv \in E(G)$. We say $G$ is $(\ell,k)$-choosable if it admits an $L$-colouring for every $(\ell, k)$-list assignment $L$. We prove that if $G$ is a planar graph with $(4,2)$-list assignment $L$ and for every triangle $T \subseteq G$ we have that $|\bigcap_{v \in V(T)} L(v)| \neq 2$, then $G$ is $L$-colourable. In fact, we prove a slightly stronger result: if $G$ contains a clique $H$ such that $V(H) \cap V(T) \neq \emptyset$ for every triangle $T \subseteq G$ with $|\bigcap_{v \in V(T)} L(v)| = 2$, then $G$ is $L$-colourable. Additionally, we give a counterexample to the correspondence colouring analogue of $(4,2)$-choosability for planar graphs.

Local girth choosability of planar graphs
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2022:8, 38pp • View PublicationBIB
In 1994, Thomassen famously proved that every planar graph is 5-choosable, resolving a conjecture initially posed by Vizing and, independently, Erd\H{os}, Rubin, and Taylor in the 1970s. Later, Thomassen proved that every planar graph of girth at least five is 3-choosable. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a \emph{local girth list assignment}: a list assignment wherein the list size of a vertex depends not on the girth of the graph, but rather on the length of the shortest cycle in which the vertex is contained. We give a local list colouring theorem unifying the two theorems of Thomassen mentioned above. In particular, we show that if $G$ is a planar graph and $L$ is a list assignment for $G$ such that $|L(v)| \geq 3$ for all $v \in V(G)$; $|L(v)| \geq 4$ for every vertex $v$ contained in a 4-cycle; and $|L(v)| \geq 5$ for every $v$ contained in a triangle, then $G$ admits an $L$-colouring.

A density bound for triangle-free $4$-critical graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every triangle-free $4$-critical graph $G$ satisfies $e(G) \geq \frac{5v(G)+2}{3}$. This result gives a unified proof that triangle-free planar graphs are $3$-colourable, and that graphs of girth at least five which embed in either the projective plane, torus, or Klein Bottle are $3$-colourable, which are results of Grötzsch, Thomassen, and Thomas and Walls. Our result is nearly best possible, as Davies has constructed triangle-free $4$-critical graphs $G$ such that $e(G) = \frac{5v(G) + 4}{3}$. To prove this result, we prove a more general result characterizing sparse $4$-critical graphs with few vertex-disjoint triangles.

On the Density of $C_7$-Critical Graphs
In 1959, Grötzsch famously proved that every planar graph of girth at least 4 is 3-colourable (or equivalently, admits a homomorphism to $C_3$). A natural generalization of this is the following conjecture: for every positive integer $t$, every planar graph of girth at least $4t$ admits a homomorphism to $C_{2t+1}$. This is in fact the planar dual of a well-known conjecture of Jaeger which states that every $4t$-edge-connected graph admits a modulo $(2t+1)$-orientation. Though Jaeger's original conjecture was disproved in 2018 by Han et al., Lovasz et al. showed that every $6t$-edge connected graph admits a modulo $(2t+1)$-flow. The latter result implies that every planar graph of girth at least $6t$ admits a homomorphism to $C_{2t+1}$. We improve upon this in the $t=3$ case, by showing that every planar graph of girth at least $16$ admits a homomorphism to $C_7$. We obtain this through a more general result regarding the density of $C_7$-critical graphs: if $G$ is a $C_7$-critical graph with $G \not \in \{C_3, C_5\}$, then $e(G) \geq \tfrac{17v(G)-2}{15}$.
