List $k$-Colouring $P_t$-Free Graphs: a Mim-width Perspective
Published in Information Processing Letters 173 (2022), 106168 • View PublicationBIB
A colouring of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a mapping $c\colon V\to \{1,2,\ldots\}$ such that $c(u)\neq c(v)$ for every two adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$. The {\sc List $k$-Colouring} problem is to decide whether a graph $G=(V,E)$ with a list $L(u)\subseteq \{1,\ldots,k\}$ for each $u\in V$ has a colouring $c$ such that $c(u)\in L(u)$ for every $u\in V$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices and let $K_{1,s}^1$ be the graph obtained from the $(s+1)$-vertex star $K_{1,s}$ by subdividing each of its edges exactly once.Recently, Chudnovsky, Spirkl and Zhong (DM 2020) proved that List $3$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for $(K_{1,s}^1,P_t)$-free graphs for every $t\geq 1$ and $s\geq 1$. We generalize their result to List $k$-Colouring for every $k\geq 1$. Our result also generalizes the known result that for every $k\geq 1$ and $s\geq 0$, List $k$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for $(sP_1+P_5)$-free graphs, which was proven for $s=0$ by Hoàng, Kamiński, Lozin, Sawada, and Shu (Algorithmica 2010) and for every $s\geq 1$ by Couturier, Golovach, Kratsch and Paulusma (Algorithmica 2015). We show our result by proving boundedness of an underlying width parameter. Namely, we show that for every $k\geq 1$, $s\geq 1$, $t\geq 1$, the class of $(K_k,K_{1,s}^1,P_t)$-free graphs has bounded mim-width and that a corresponding branch decomposition is "quickly computable" for these graphs.
Edge-colouring graphs with local list sizes

The famous List Colouring Conjecture from the 1970s states that for every graph $G$ the chromatic index of $G$ is equal to its list chromatic index. In 1996 in a seminal paper, Kahn proved that the List Colouring Conjecture holds asymptotically. Our main result is a local generalization of Kahn's theorem. More precisely, we show that, for a graph $G$ with sufficiently large maximum degree $Δ$ and minimum degree $δ\geq \ln^{25} Δ$, the following holds: for every assignment of lists of colours to the edges of $G$, such that $|L(e)| \geq (1+o(1)) \cdot \max\left\{\rm{deg}(u),\rm{deg}(v)\right\}$ for each edge $e=uv$, there is an $L$-edge-colouring of $G$. Furthermore, Kahn showed that the List Colouring Conjecture holds asymptotically for linear, $k$-uniform hypergraphs, and recently Molloy generalized Kahn's original result to correspondence colouring as well as its hypergraph generalization. We prove local versions of all of these generalizations by showing a weighted version that simultaneously implies all of our results.

Multiple list colouring of $3$-choice critical graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is called $3$-choice critical if $G$ is not $2$-choosable but any proper subgraph is $2$-choosable. A characterization of $3$-choice critical graphs was given by Voigt in [On list Colourings and Choosability of Graphs, Habilitationsschrift, Tu Ilmenau(1998)]. Voigt conjectured that if $G$ is a bipartite $3$-choice critical graph, then $G$ is $(4m, 2m)$-choosable for every integer $m$. This conjecture was disproved by Meng, Puleo and Zhu in [On (4, 2)-Choosable Graphs, Journal of Graph Theory 85(2):412-428(2017)]. They showed that if $G=Θ_{r,s,t}$ where $r,s,t$ have the same parity and $\min\{r,s,t\} \ge 3$, or $G=Θ_{2,2,2,2p}$ with $p \ge 2$, then $G$ is bipartite $3$-choice critical, but not $(4,2)$-choosable. On the other hand, all the other bipartite 3-choice critical graphs are $(4,2)$-choosable. This paper strengthens the result of Meng, Puleo and Zhu and shows that all the other bipartite $3$-choice critical graphs are $(4m,2m)$-choosable for every integer $m$.

Asymmetric list sizes in bipartite graphs
Published in Ann. Comb. 25, 913-933 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
Given a bipartite graph with parts $A$ and $B$ having maximum degrees at most $Δ_A$ and $Δ_B$, respectively, consider a list assignment such that every vertex in $A$ or $B$ is given a list of colours of size $k_A$ or $k_B$, respectively. We prove some general sufficient conditions in terms of $Δ_A$, $Δ_B$, $k_A$, $k_B$ to be guaranteed a proper colouring such that each vertex is coloured using only a colour from its list. These are asymptotically nearly sharp in the very asymmetric cases. We establish one sufficient condition in particular, where $Δ_A=Δ_B=Δ$, $k_A=\log Δ$ and $k_B=(1+o(1))Δ/\logΔ$ as $Δ\to\infty$. This amounts to partial progress towards a conjecture from 1998 of Krivelevich and the first author. We also derive some necessary conditions through an intriguing connection between the complete case and the extremal size of approximate Steiner systems. We show that for complete bipartite graphs these conditions are asymptotically nearly sharp in a large part of the parameter space. This has provoked the following. In the setup above, we conjecture that a proper list colouring is always guaranteed * if $k_A \ge Δ_A^\varepsilon$ and $k_B \ge Δ_B^\varepsilon$ for any $\varepsilon>0$ provided $Δ_A$ and $Δ_B$ are large enough; * if $k_A \ge C \logΔ_B$ and $k_B \ge C \logΔ_A$ for some absolute constant $C>1$; or * if $Δ_A=Δ_B = Δ$ and $ k_B \ge C (Δ/\logΔ)^{1/k_A}\log Δ$ for some absolute constant $C>0$. These are asymmetric generalisations of the above-mentioned conjecture of Krivelevich and the first author, and if true are close to best possible. Our general sufficient conditions provide partial progress towards these conjectures.

Subgraphs of large connectivity and chromatic number
Resolving a problem raised by Norin, we show that for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists an $f(k) \le 7k$ such that every graph $G$ with chromatic number at least $f(k)+1$ contains a subgraph $H$ with both connectivity and chromatic number at least $k$. This result is best-possible up to multiplicative constants, and sharpens earlier results of Alon-Kleitman-Thomassen-Saks-Seymour from 1987 showing that $f(k) = O(k^3)$, and of Chudnovsky-Penev-Scott-Trotignon from 2013 showing that $f(k) = O(k^2)$. Our methods are robust enough to handle list colouring as well: we also show that for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists an $f_\ell(k) \le 4k$ such that every graph $G$ with list chromatic number at least $f_\ell(k)+1$ contains a subgraph $H$ with both connectivity and list chromatic number at least $k$. This result is again best-possible up to multiplicative constants; here, unlike with $f(\cdot)$, even the existence of $f_\ell(\cdot)$ appears to have been previously unknown.

Colourings, transversals and local sparsity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated both by recently introduced forms of list colouring and by earlier work on independent transversals subject to a local sparsity condition, we use the semi-random method to prove the following result. For any function $μ$ satisfying $μ(d)=o(d)$ as $d\to\infty$, there is a function $λ$ satisfying $λ(d)=d+o(d)$ as $d\to\infty$ such that the following holds. For any graph $H$ and any partition of its vertices into parts of size at least $λ$ such that (a) for each part the average over its vertices of degree to other parts is at most $d$, and (b) the maximum degree from a vertex to some other part is at most $μ$, there is guaranteed to be a transversal of the parts that forms an independent set of $H$. This is a common strengthening of two results of Loh and Sudakov (2007) and Molloy and Thron (2012), each of which in turn implies an earlier result of Reed and Sudakov (2002).
Generalized list colouring of graphs

This paper disproves a conjecture of Wang, Wu, Yan and Xie, and answers in negative a question in Dvorak, Pekarek and Sereni. In return, we pose five open problems.
List colouring of two matroids through reduction to partition matroids
In the list coloring problem for two matroids, we are given matroids $M_1=(S,{\cal I}_1)$ and $M_2=(S,{\cal I}_2)$ on the same ground set $S$, and the goal is to determine the smallest number $k$ such that given arbitrary lists $L_s$ of $k$ colors for $s\in S$, it is possible to choose a color from each list so that every monochromatic set is independent in both $M_1$ and $M_2$. When both $M_1$ and $M_2$ are partition matroids, Galvin's list coloring theorem for bipartite graphs gives the answer. One of the main open questions is to decide if there exists a constant $c$ such that if the coloring number is $k$ (i.e., the ground set can be partitioned into $k$ common independent sets), then the list coloring number is at most $c\cdot k$. We consider matroid classes that appear naturally in combinatorial optimization problems, namely graphic matroids, paving matroids and gammoids. We show that if both matroids are from these fundamental classes, then the list coloring number is at most twice the coloring number. The proof is based on a new approach that reduces a matroid to a partition matroid without increasing its coloring number too much, and might be of independent combinatorial interest. In particular, we show that if $M=(S,{\cal I})$ is a matroid in which $S$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets, then there exists a partition matroid $N=(S,{\cal J})$ with ${\cal J}\subseteq{\cal I}$ in which $S$ can be partitioned into (A) $k$ independent sets if $M$ is a transversal matroid, (B) $2k-1$ independent sets if $M$ is a graphic matroid, (C) $\lceil kr/(r-1)\rceil$ independent sets if $M$ is a paving matroid of rank $r$, and (D) $2k-2$ independent sets if $M$ is a gammoid. We extend our results by showing that the existence of a matroid $N$ with $χ(N)\leq 2χ(M)$ implies the existence of a matroid $N'$ with $χ(N')\leq 2χ(M')$ for every truncation $M'$ of $M$.

List colouring triangle free planar graphs

This paper proves the following result: Assume $G$ is a triangle free planar graph, $X$ is an independent set of $G$. If $L$ is a list assignment of $G$ such that $\mid L(v)\mid = 4$ for each vertex $v \in V(G)-X$ and $\mid L(v)\mid = 3$ for each vertex $v \in X$, then $G$ is $L$-colourable.

List Ramsey numbers
We introduce the list colouring extension of classical Ramsey numbers. We investigate when the two Ramsey numbers are equal, and in general, how far apart they can be from each other. We find graph sequences where the two are equal and where they are far apart. For $\ell$-uniform cliques we prove that the list Ramsey number is bounded by an exponential function, while it is well-known that the Ramsey number is super-exponential for uniformity at least $3$. This is in great contrast to the graph case where we cannot even decide the question of equality for cliques.
Colouring triangle-free graphs with local list sizes

We prove two distinct and natural refinements of a recent breakthrough result of Molloy (and a follow-up work of Bernshteyn) on the (list) chromatic number of triangle-free graphs. In both our results, we permit the amount of colour made available to vertices of lower degree to be accordingly lower. One result concerns list colouring and correspondence colouring, while the other concerns fractional colouring. Our proof of the second illustrates the use of the hard-core model to prove a Johansson-type result, which may be of independent interest.

A refinement of choosability of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Assume $k$ is a positive integer, $λ=\{k_1, k_2, \ldots, k_q\}$ is a partition of $k$ and $G$ is a graph. A $λ$-list assignment of $G$ is a $k$-list assignment $L$ of $G$ such that the colour set $\cup_{v\in V(G)}L(v)$ can be partitioned into $q$ subsets $C_1 \cup C_2 \ldots \cup C_q$ and for each vertex $v$ of $G$, $|L(v) \cap C_i| \ge k_i$. We say $G$ is $λ$-choosable if for each $λ$-list assignment $L$ of $G$, $G$ is $L$-colourable. It follows from the definition that if $λ=\{k\}$, then $λ$-choosable is the same as $k$-choosable, if $λ=\{1,1,\ldots, 1\}$, then $λ$-choosable is equivalent to $k$-colourable. For the other partitions of $k$ sandwiched between $\{k\}$ and $\{1,1,\ldots, 1\}$ in terms of refinements, $λ$-choosability reveals a complex hierarchy of colourability of graphs. We prove that for two partitions $λ, λ'$ of $k$, every $λ$-choosable graph is $λ'$-choosable if and only if $λ'$ is a refinement of $λ$. Then we concentrate on $λ$-choosability of planar graphs for partitions $λ$ of $4$. Several conjectures concerning colouring of generalized signed planar graphs are proposed and relations between these conjectures and list colouring conjectures for planar graphs are explored. In particular, it is proved that a conjecture of Kündgen and Ramamurthi on list colouring of planar graphs is implied by the conjecture that every planar graph is $\{2,2\}$-choosable, and also implied by the conjecture of Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera which asserts that every planar graph is signed MRS-$4$-colourable, and that a conjecture of Kang and Steffen asserting that every planar graph is signed KS-$4$-colourable implies that every planar graph is $\{1,1,2\}$-choosable.

Defective and Clustered Graph Colouring
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, #DS23, http://www.combinatorics.org/DS23, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
Consider the following two ways to colour the vertices of a graph where the requirement that adjacent vertices get distinct colours is relaxed. A colouring has "defect" $d$ if each monochromatic component has maximum degree at most $d$. A colouring has "clustering" $c$ if each monochromatic component has at most $c$ vertices. This paper surveys research on these types of colourings, where the first priority is to minimise the number of colours, with small defect or small clustering as a secondary goal. List colouring variants are also considered. The following graph classes are studied: outerplanar graphs, planar graphs, graphs embeddable in surfaces, graphs with given maximum degree, graphs with given maximum average degree, graphs excluding a given subgraph, graphs with linear crossing number, linklessly or knotlessly embeddable graphs, graphs with given Colin de Verdière parameter, graphs with given circumference, graphs excluding a fixed graph as an immersion, graphs with given thickness, graphs with given stack- or queue-number, graphs excluding $K_t$ as a minor, graphs excluding $K_{s,t}$ as a minor, and graphs excluding an arbitrary graph $H$ as a minor. Several open problems are discussed.

Separation choosability and dense bipartite induced subgraphs
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 28 (2019) 720-732 • View PublicationBIB
We study a restricted form of list colouring, for which every pair of lists that correspond to adjacent vertices may not share more than one colour. The optimal list size such that a proper list colouring is always possible given this restriction, we call separation choosability. We show for bipartite graphs that separation choosability increases with (the logarithm of) the minimum degree. This strengthens results of Molloy and Thron and, partially, of Alon. One attempt to drop the bipartiteness assumption precipitates a natural class of Ramsey-type questions, of independent interest. For example, does every triangle-free graph of minimum degree $d$ contain a bipartite induced subgraph of minimum degree $Ω(\log d)$ as $d\to\infty$?

A note on two conjectures that strengthen the four colour theorem
There are two conjectures concerning planar graph colourings that are strengthenings of the four colour theorem. One concerns signed graph colouring and is proposed by Máčajová, Raspaud and Škoviera. It asserts that every signed planar graph is $4$-colourable. Another concerns list colouring and is proposed by Kündgen and Ramamurthi which asserts that if $L$ is a $2$-list assignment of a planar graph $G$, then there is an $L$-colouring of $G$ such that each colour class induces a bipartite graph. In this note we prove that the first conjecture implies the second one.

List colouring of graphs and generalized Dyck paths

The Catalan numbers occur in various counting problems in combinatorics. This paper reveals a connection between the Catalan numbers and list colouring of graphs. Assume $G$ is a graph and $f:V(G) \to N$ is a mapping. For a nonnegative integer $m$, let $f^{(m)}$ be the extension of $f$ to the graph $ G \diamondplus \overline{K_m}$ for which $f^{(m)}(v)=|V(G)|$ for each vertex $v$ of $\overline{K_m}$. Let $m_c(G,f)$ be the minimum $m$ such that $ G \diamondplus \overline{K_m}$ is not $f^{(m)}$-choosable and $m_p(G,f)$ be the minimum $m$ such that $ G \diamondplus \overline{K_m}$ is not $f^{(m)}$-paintable. We study the parameter $m_c(K_n, f)$ and $m_p(K_n,f)$ for arbitrary mappings $f$. For $\vec{x}=(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n)$, an $\vec{x}$-dominated path ending at $(a, b)$ is a monotonic path $P$ of the $a \times b$ grid from $(0,0)$ to $(a,b)$ such that each vertex $(i,j)$ on $P$ satisfies $i \le x_{j+1}$. Let $ψ(\vec{x})$ be the number of $\vec{x}$-dominated paths ending at $(x_n,n)$. By this definition, the Catalan number $C_n$ equals $ ψ((0,1, \ldots, n-1)) $. This paper proves that if $G=K_n$ has vertices $v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_n$ and $f(v_1) \le f(v_2) \le \ldots \le f(v_n)$, then $m_c(G,f)=m_p(G,f)=ψ(\vec{x}(f))$, where $\vec{x}(f)=(x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n)$ and $x_i=f(v_i)-i$ for $i=1, 2,\ldots, n$. Therefore, if $f(v_i)=n$, then $m_c(K_n, f)=m_p(K_n, f)$ equals the Catalan number $C_n$.

List colourings of multipartite hypergraphs

Let $χ_l(G)$ denote the list chromatic number of the $r$-uniform hypergraph~$G$. Extending a result of Alon for graphs, Saxton and the second author used the method of containers to prove that, if $G$ is simple and $d$-regular, then $χ_l(G)\ge (1/(r-1)+o(1))\log_r d$. To see how close this inequality is to best possible, we examine $χ_l(G)$ when $G$ is a random $r$-partite hypergraph with $n$ vertices in each class. The value when $r=2$ was determined by Alon and Krivelevich, here we show that $χ_l(G)= (g(r,α)+o(1))\log_r d$ almost surely, where $d$ is the expected average degree of~$G$ and $α=\log_nd$. The function $g(r,α)$ is defined in terms of "preference orders" and can be determined fairly explicitly. This is enough to show that the container method gives an optimal lower bound on $χ_l(G)$ for $r=2$ and $r=3$, but, perhaps surprisingly, apparently not for $r\ge4$.

The Thue choice number versus the Thue chromatic number of graphs
We say that a vertex colouring $\varphi$ of a graph $G$ is nonrepetitive if there is no positive integer $n$ and a path on $2n$ vertices $v_{1}\ldots v_{2n}$ in $G$ such that the associated sequence of colours $\varphi(v_{1})\ldots\varphi(v_{2n})$ satisfy $\varphi(v_{i})=\varphi(v_{i+n})$ for all $i=1,2,\dots,n$. The minimum number of colours in a nonrepetitive vertex colouring of $G$ is the Thue chromatic number $π(G)$. For the case of vertex list colourings the Thue choice number $π_{l}(G)$ of $G$ denotes the smallest integer $k$ such that for every list assignment $L:V(G)\rightarrow 2^{\mathbb{N}}$ with minimum list length at least $k$, there is a nonrepetitive vertex colouring of $G$ from the assigned lists. Recently it was proved that the Thue chromatic number and the Thue choice number of the same graph may have an arbitrary large difference in some classes of graphs. Here we give an overview of the known results where we compare these two parameters for several families of graphs and we also give a list of open problems on this topic.
