Subdivided expanders and counterexamples to the Tree Product Conjecture
Distel, Gollin, Harvey, Hendrey, Hickingbotham, Mohar and Wood (2023) conjectured that graphs of degree-$d$ polynomial growth can be embedded into the strong product of $d$ trees, each with linear growth, and a constant-size complete graph. Very recently, the case $d = 4$ of the conjecture was disproved by Illingworth, Norin and Steiner (2026). In this paper, we provide counterexamples to the conjecture for every integer $d \geq 2$, thus leaving $d=1$ as the only open case. Our counterexamples are appropriately subdivided cubic expanders. Our main contribution is to construct, for every real number $d>1$, subdivisions of cubic expanders with degree-$d$ polynomial growth and whose balanced separators have size $Ω(n^{1-1/d}\log n)$, where $n$ denotes the number of vertices.
Graph Classes Closed under Self-intersection
A graph class is monotone if it is closed under taking subgraphs. It is known that a monotone class defined by finitely many obstructions has bounded treewidth if and only if one of the obstructions is a so-called tripod, that is, a disjoint union of trees with exactly one vertex of degree 3 and paths. This dichotomy also characterizes exactly those monotone graph classes for which many NP-hard algorithmic problems admit polynomial-time algorithms. These algorithmic dichotomies, however, do not extend to the universe of all hereditary classes, which are classes closed under taking induced subgraphs. This leads to the natural question of whether we can extend known algorithmic dichotomies for monotone classes to larger families of hereditary classes. We give an affirmative answer to this question by considering the family of hereditary graph classes that are closed under self-intersection, which is known to be located strictly between the monotone and hereditary classes. We prove a new structural characterization of graphs in self-intersection-closed classes excluding a tripod. We use our characterization to give a complete dichotomy of Maximum Independent Set, and its weighted variant for self-intersection-closed classes defined by finitely many obstructions: these problems are in P if the class excludes a tripod and NP-hard otherwise. This generalizes several known results on Maximum Independent Set. We also use it to obtain dichotomies for Maximum Induced Matching on self-intersection-closed classes of bipartite graphs defined by finitely many obstructions. Similarly, we obtain dichotomies for Satisfiability and Counting Satisfiability on self-intersection-closed classes of (bipartite) incidence graphs defined by finitely many obstructions, and for boundedness of clique-width for self-intersection-closed classes of bipartite graphs defined by finitely many obstructions.
Layered tree-independence number and clique-based separators
Motivated by a question of Galby, Munaro, and Yang (SoCG 2023) asking whether every graph class of bounded layered tree-independence number admits clique-based separators of sublinear weight, we investigate relations between layered tree-independence number, weight of clique-based separators, clique cover degeneracy and independence degeneracy. In particular, we provide a number of results bounding these parameters on geometric intersection graphs. For example, we show that the layered tree-independence number is $\mathcal{O}(g)$ for $g$-map graphs, $\mathcal{O}(\frac{r}{\tanh r})$ for hyperbolic uniform disk graphs with radius $r$, and $\mathcal{O}(1)$ for spherical uniform disk graphs with radius $r$. Our structural results have algorithmic consequences. In particular, we obtain a number of subexponential or quasi-polynomial-time algorithms for weighted problems such as \textsc{Max Weight Independent Set} and \textsc{Min Weight Feedback Vertex Set} on several geometric intersection graphs. Finally, we conjecture that every fractionally tree-independence-number-fragile graph class has bounded independence degeneracy.
Maximum list $r$-colorable induced subgraphs in $kP_3$-free graphs
We show that, for every fixed positive integers $r$ and $k$, \textsc{Max-Weight List $r$-Colorable Induced Subgraph} admits a polynomial-time algorithm on $kP_3$-free graphs. This problem is a common generalization of \textsc{Max-Weight Independent Set}, \textsc{Odd Cycle Transversal} and \textsc{List $r$-Coloring}, among others. Our result has several consequences. First, it implies that, for every fixed $r \geq 5$, assuming $\mathsf{P}\neq \mathsf{NP}$, \textsc{Max-Weight List $r$-Colorable Induced Subgraph} is polynomial-time solvable on $H$-free graphs if and only if $H$ is an induced subgraph of either $kP_3$ or $P_5+kP_1$, for some $k \geq 1$. Second, it makes considerable progress toward a complexity dichotomy for \textsc{Odd Cycle Transversal} on $H$-free graphs, allowing to answer a question of Agrawal, Lima, Lokshtanov, Rz{ą}{ż}ewski, Saurabh, and Sharma [TALG 2024]. Third, it gives a short and self-contained proof of the known result of Chudnovsky, Hajebi, and Spirkl [Combinatorica 2024] that \textsc{List $r$-Coloring} on $kP_3$-free graphs is polynomial-time solvable for every fixed $r$ and $k$. We also consider two natural distance-$d$ generalizations of \textsc{Max-Weight Independent Set} and \textsc{List $r$-Coloring} and provide polynomial-time algorithms on $kP_3$-free graphs for every fixed integers $r$, $k$, and $d \geq 6$.
Non-crossing $H$-graphs: a generalization of proper interval graphs admitting FPT algorithms
We prove new parameterized complexity results for the FO Model Checking problem on a well-known generalization of interval and circular-arc graphs: the class of $H$-graphs, for any fixed multigraph $H$. In particular, we research how the parameterized complexity differs between two subclasses of $H$-graphs: proper $H$-graphs and non-crossing $H$-graphs, each generalizing proper interval graphs and proper circular-arc graphs. We first generalize a known result of Bonnet et al. (IPEC 2022) from interval graphs to $H$-graphs, for any (simple) forest $H$, by showing that for such $H$, the class of $H$-graphs is delineated. This implies that for every hereditary subclass ${\cal D}$ of $H$-graphs, FO Model Checking is in FPT if ${\cal D}$ has bounded twin-width and AW[$*$]-hard otherwise. As proper claw-graphs have unbounded twin-width, this means that FO Model Checking is AW[$*$]-hard for proper $H$-graphs for certain forests $H$ like the claw. In contrast, we show that even for every multigraph $H$, non-crossing $H$-graphs have bounded proper mixed-thinness and hence bounded twin-width, and thus FO Model Checking is in FPT on non-crossing $H$-graphs when parameterized by $\Vert H \Vert+\ell$, where $\Vert H \Vert$ is the size of $H$ and $\ell$ is the size of a formula. It is known that a special case of FO Model Checking, Independent Set, is $\mathsf{W}[1]$-hard on $H$-graphs when parameterized by $\Vert H \Vert +k$, where $k$ is the size of a solution. We strengthen this $\mathsf{W}[1]$-hardness result to proper $H$-graphs. Hence, we solve, in two different ways, an open problem of Chaplick (Discrete Math. 2023), who asked about problems that can be solved faster for non-crossing $H$-graphs than for proper $H$-graphs.

Polynomial-time approximation schemes for induced subgraph problems on fractionally tree-independence-number-fragile graphs
We investigate a relaxation of the notion of fractional treewidth-fragility, namely fractional tree-independence-number-fragility. In particular, we obtain polynomial-time approximation schemes for meta-problems such as finding a maximum-weight sparse induced subgraph satisfying a given $\mathsf{CMSO}_2$ formula on fractionally tree-independence-number-fragile graph classes. Our approach unifies and extends several known polynomial-time approximation schemes on seemingly unrelated graph classes, such as classes of intersection graphs of fat objects in a fixed dimension or proper minor-closed classes. We also study the related notion of layered tree-independence number, a relaxation of layered treewidth, and its applications to exact subexponential-time algorithms.
Treewidth versus clique number. IV. Tree-independence number of graphs excluding an induced star
Many recent works address the question of characterizing induced obstructions to bounded treewidth. In 2022, Lozin and Razgon completely answered this question for graph classes defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs. Their result also implies a characterization of graph classes defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs that are $(tw,ω)$-bounded, that is, treewidth can only be large due to the presence of a large clique. This condition is known to be satisfied for any graph class with bounded tree-independence number, a graph parameter introduced independently by Yolov in 2018 and by Dallard, Milanič, and Štorgel in 2024. Dallard et al. conjectured that $(tw,ω)$-boundedness is actually equivalent to bounded tree-independence number. We address this conjecture in the context of graph classes defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs and prove it for the case of graph classes excluding an induced star. We also prove it for subclasses of the class of line graphs, determine the exact values of the tree-independence numbers of line graphs of complete graphs and line graphs of complete bipartite graphs, and characterize the tree-independence number of $P_4$-free graphs, which implies a linear-time algorithm for its computation. Applying the algorithmic framework provided in a previous paper of the series leads to polynomial-time algorithms for the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem in an infinite family of graph classes.
Comparing Width Parameters on Graph Classes
We study how the relationship between non-equivalent width parameters changes once we restrict to some special graph class. As width parameters, we consider treewidth, clique-width, twin-width, mim-width, sim-width and tree-independence number, whereas as graph classes we consider $K_{t,t}$-subgraph-free graphs, line graphs and their common superclass, for $t \geq 3$, of $K_{t,t}$-free graphs. We first provide a complete comparison when restricted to $K_{t,t}$-subgraph-free graphs, showing in particular that treewidth, clique-width, mim-width, sim-width and tree-independence number are all equivalent. This extends a result of Gurski and Wanke (2000) stating that treewidth and clique-width are equivalent for the class of $K_{t,t}$-subgraph-free graphs. Next, we provide a complete comparison when restricted to line graphs, showing in particular that, on any class of line graphs, clique-width, mim-width, sim-width and tree-independence number are all equivalent, and bounded if and only if the class of root graphs has bounded treewidth. This extends a result of Gurski and Wanke (2007) stating that a class of graphs ${\cal G}$ has bounded treewidth if and only if the class of line graphs of graphs in ${\cal G}$ has bounded clique-width. We then provide an almost-complete comparison for $K_{t,t}$-free graphs, leaving one missing case. Our main result is that $K_{t,t}$-free graphs of bounded mim-width have bounded tree-independence number. This result has structural and algorithmic consequences. In particular, it proves a special case of a conjecture of Dallard, Milanič and Štorgel. Finally, we consider the question of whether boundedness of a certain width parameter is preserved under graph powers. We show that the question has a positive answer for sim-width precisely in the case of odd powers.

Non-empty intersection of longest paths in $H$-free graphs

We make progress toward a characterization of the graphs $H$ such that every connected $H$-free graph has a longest path transversal of size $1$. In particular, we show that the graphs $H$ on at most $4$ vertices satisfying this property are exactly the linear forests. We also show that if the order of a connected graph $G$ is large relative to its connectivity $κ(G)$, and its independence number $α(G)$ satisfies $α(G) \le κ(G) + 2$, then each vertex of maximum degree forms a longest path transversal of size $1$.

On algorithmic applications of sim-width and mim-width of $(H_1, H_2)$-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Mim-width and sim-width are among the most powerful graph width parameters, with sim-width more powerful than mim-width, which is in turn more powerful than clique-width. While several $\mathsf{NP}$-hard graph problems become tractable for graph classes whose mim-width is bounded and quickly computable, no algorithmic applications of boundedness of sim-width are known. In [Kang et al., A width parameter useful for chordal and co-comparability graphs, Theoretical Computer Science, 704:1-17, 2017], it is asked whether \textsc{Independent Set} and \textsc{$3$-Colouring} are $\mathsf{NP}$-complete on graphs of sim-width at most $1$. We observe that, for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$, \textsc{List $k$-Colouring} is polynomial-time solvable for graph classes whose sim-width is bounded and quickly computable. Moreover, we show that if the same holds for \textsc{Independent Set}, then \textsc{Independent $\mathcal{H}$-Packing} is polynomial-time solvable for graph classes whose sim-width is bounded and quickly computable. This problem is a common generalisation of \textsc{Independent Set}, \textsc{Induced Matching}, \textsc{Dissociation Set} and \textsc{$k$-Separator}. We also make progress toward classifying the mim-width of $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs in the case $H_1$ is complete or edgeless. Our results solve some open problems in [Brettell et al., Bounding the mim-width of hereditary graph classes, Journal of Graph Theory, 99(1):117-151, 2022].
Solving Problems on Generalized Convex Graphs via Mim-Width
Published in Journal of Computer and System Sciences, 140:103493, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
A bipartite graph $G=(A,B,E)$ is ${\cal H}$-convex, for some family of graphs ${\cal H}$, if there exists a graph $H\in {\cal H}$ with $V(H)=A$ such that the set of neighbours in $A$ of each $b\in B$ induces a connected subgraph of $H$. Many $\mathsf{NP}$-complete problems, including problems such as Dominating Set, Feedback Vertex Set, Induced Matching and List $k$-Colouring, become polynomial-time solvable for ${\mathcal H}$-convex graphs when ${\mathcal H}$ is the set of paths. In this case, the class of ${\mathcal H}$-convex graphs is known as the class of convex graphs. The underlying reason is that the class of convex graphs has bounded mim-width. We extend the latter result to families of ${\mathcal H}$-convex graphs where (i) ${\mathcal H}$ is the set of cycles, or (ii) ${\mathcal H}$ is the set of trees with bounded maximum degree and a bounded number of vertices of degree at least $3$. As a consequence, we can re-prove and strengthen a large number of results on generalized convex graphs known in the literature. To complement result (ii), we show that the mim-width of ${\mathcal H}$-convex graphs is unbounded if ${\mathcal H}$ is the set of trees with arbitrarily large maximum degree or an arbitrarily large number of vertices of degree at least $3$. In this way we are able to determine complexity dichotomies for the aforementioned graph problems. Afterwards we perform a more refined width-parameter analysis, which shows even more clearly which width parameters are bounded for classes of ${\cal H}$-convex graphs.
List $k$-Colouring $P_t$-Free Graphs: a Mim-width Perspective
Published in Information Processing Letters 173 (2022), 106168 • View PublicationBIB
A colouring of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a mapping $c\colon V\to \{1,2,\ldots\}$ such that $c(u)\neq c(v)$ for every two adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$. The {\sc List $k$-Colouring} problem is to decide whether a graph $G=(V,E)$ with a list $L(u)\subseteq \{1,\ldots,k\}$ for each $u\in V$ has a colouring $c$ such that $c(u)\in L(u)$ for every $u\in V$. Let $P_t$ be the path on $t$ vertices and let $K_{1,s}^1$ be the graph obtained from the $(s+1)$-vertex star $K_{1,s}$ by subdividing each of its edges exactly once.Recently, Chudnovsky, Spirkl and Zhong (DM 2020) proved that List $3$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for $(K_{1,s}^1,P_t)$-free graphs for every $t\geq 1$ and $s\geq 1$. We generalize their result to List $k$-Colouring for every $k\geq 1$. Our result also generalizes the known result that for every $k\geq 1$ and $s\geq 0$, List $k$-Colouring is polynomial-time solvable for $(sP_1+P_5)$-free graphs, which was proven for $s=0$ by Hoàng, Kamiński, Lozin, Sawada, and Shu (Algorithmica 2010) and for every $s\geq 1$ by Couturier, Golovach, Kratsch and Paulusma (Algorithmica 2015). We show our result by proving boundedness of an underlying width parameter. Namely, we show that for every $k\geq 1$, $s\geq 1$, $t\geq 1$, the class of $(K_k,K_{1,s}^1,P_t)$-free graphs has bounded mim-width and that a corresponding branch decomposition is "quickly computable" for these graphs.

Sublinear Longest Path Transversals

We show that connected graphs admit sublinear longest path transversals. This improves an earlier result of Rautenbach and Sereni and is related to the fifty-year-old question of whether connected graphs admit longest path transversals of constant size. The same technique allows us to show that $2$-connected graphs admit sublinear longest cycle transversals.
Bounding the Mim-Width of Hereditary Graph Classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A large number of NP-hard graph problems become polynomial-time solvable on graph classes where the mim-width is bounded and quickly computable. Hence, when solving such problems on special graph classes, it is helpful to know whether the graph class under consideration has bounded mim-width. We first extend the toolkit for proving (un)boundedness of mim-width of graph classes. This enables us to initiate a systematic study into bounding mim-width from the perspective of hereditary graph classes. For a given graph $H$, the class of $H$-free graphs has bounded mim-width if and only if it has bounded clique-width. We show that the same is not true for $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs. We find several general classes of $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs having unbounded clique-width, but the mim-width is bounded and quickly computable. We also prove a number of new results showing that, for certain $H_1$ and $H_2$, the class of $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs has unbounded mim-width. Combining these with known results, we present summary theorems of the current state of the art for the boundedness of mim-width for $(H_1,H_2)$-free graphs.

The VC-Dimension of Graphs with Respect to k-Connected Subgraphs
We study the VC-dimension of the set system on the vertex set of some graph which is induced by the family of its $k$-connected subgraphs. In particular, we give tight upper and lower bounds for the VC-dimension. Moreover, we show that computing the VC-dimension is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete and that it remains $\mathsf{NP}$-complete for split graphs and for some subclasses of planar bipartite graphs in the cases $k = 1$ and $k = 2$. On the positive side, we observe it can be decided in linear time for graphs of bounded clique-width.
