DP vertex-arboricity of sparse graphs
The vertex arboricity $\mathrm{va}(G)$ of a multigraph $G$ is the minimum number $k$ for which $V(G)$ can be partitioned into $k$ subsets, each of which induces an acyclic subgraph of $G$. By definition, if $\mathrm{va}(G)= k$, then the chromatic number, $χ(G)$, satisfies $k\leq χ(G)\leq 2k$. Fundamental results by Borodin from 1976 and Bollobás and Manvel from 1979 imply an analog of Gallai's lower bound on the number of edges in a $(2k-1)$-critical graph. We consider a slight generalization of vertex arboricity in the setting of DP-coloring. Using this framework, we derive lower bounds on the number of edges in graphs critical for vertex arboricity and for list arboricity that are better than Gallai's bound, along with similar bounds in our DP-setting.
An introduction to equitable DP coloring of graphs
A proper $k$-coloring of vertices of an $n$-vertex graph is equitable if the size of every color class is $\lfloor n/k\rfloor$ or $\lceil n/k\rceil$. An extension of it to list coloring requires only that the size of every color class is at most $\lceil n/k\rceil$. Such colorings have interesting applications and have been actively studied recently. In this paper, we extend the notion of equitable coloring to the more general notion of equitable DP coloring and study properties of the new parameter.
Turán number of four vertex-disjoint cliques
Given a graph $H$, the Turán number ${\rm ex}(n,H)$ of $H$ is the maximum number of edges of an $n$-vertex simple graph containing no $H$ as a subgraph. Let $kK_p$ denote the disjoint union of $k$ copies of the complete graph $K_p$. In this paper, utilizing the idea of the proof of the Hajnal-Szemerédi Theorem and discharging, we determine the value ${\rm ex}(n,4K_p)$ for all $n$ and $p\ge 3$.
Flexible DP 3-coloring of sparse multigraphs
A \emph{request} on a graph assigns a preferred color to a subset of the vertices. A graph $G$ is \emph{$ε$-flexibly $k$-choosable} if for every $k$-list assignment $L$ and every request $r$ on $G$, there is an $L$-coloring such that an $ε$-fraction of the requests are satisfied. This notion was introduced in 2019 by Dvořák, Norin, and Postle, who also proved important properties of flexible colorings and posed several natural problems. However, the weighted version of this problem is a special case of the much older problem of fractional hypergraph matchings, introduced by Lovász in 1975. We study flexibly DP-colorable multigraphs. We prove that every loopless multigraph with maximum average degree less than $3$ is $\frac{1}{5}$-flexibly DP $3$-colorable, except for an infinite family of multigraphs that we completely characterize. The constant $ε= \frac 15$ is best possible in the weighted setting, as shown by an infinite family of tight examples. Our result follows from a stronger statement in terms of potential. We also provide a family of graphs that gives a negative answer to a question by Dvořák, Norin, and Postle regarding flexibility for list coloring in the setting of DP-coloring.
Results and Problems on Equitable Coloring of Graphs
A proper coloring of vertices of a graph is equitable if the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most 1. Such colorings have many applications and are interesting by themselves. In this paper, we discuss the state of art and unsolved problems on equitable coloring and its list versions.
Equitable list coloring of sparse graphs
A proper vertex coloring of a graph is equitable if the sizes of all color classes differ by at most $1$. For a list assignment $L$ of $k$ colors to each vertex of an $n$-vertex graph $G$, an equitable $L$-coloring of $G$ is a proper coloring of vertices of $G$ from their lists such that no color is used more than $\lceil n/k\rceil$ times. Call a graph equitably $k$-choosable if it has an equitable $L$-coloring for every $k$-list assignment $L$. A graph $G$ is $(a,b)$-sparse if for every $A\subseteq V(G)$, the number of edges in the subgraph $G[A]$ of $G$ induced by $A$ is at most $a|A|+b$.
Our first main result is that every $(\frac{7}{6},\frac{1}{3})$-sparse graph with minimum degree at least $2$ is equitably $3$-colorable and equitably $3$-choosable. This is sharp. Our second main result is that every $(\frac{5}{4},\frac{1}{2})$-sparse graph with minimum degree at least $2$ is equitably $4$-colorable and equitably $4$-choosable. This is also sharp.
One of the tools in the proof is the new notion of strongly equitable (SE) list coloring. This notion is both stronger and more natural than equitable list coloring; and our upper bounds are for SE list coloring.
A lower bound on the number of edges in DP-critical graphs. II. Four colors
A graph $G$ is $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) if $χ(G)= k$ ($χ_\ell(G)= k$, $χ_\mathrm{DP}(G)= k$) and for every proper subgraph $G'$ of $G$, $χ(G')<k$ ($χ_\ell(G')< k$, $χ_\mathrm{DP}(G')<k$). Let $f(n, k)$ ($f_\ell(n, k), f_\mathrm{DP}(n,k)$) denote the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) graph. The main result of this paper is that if $n\geq 6$ and $n\not\in\{7,10\}$, then $$f_\mathrm{DP}(n,4)>\left(3 + \frac{1}{5} \right) \frac{n}{2}. $$ This is the first bound on $f_\mathrm{DP}(n,4)$ that is asymptotically better than the well-known bound $f(n,4)\geq \left(3 + \frac{1}{13} \right) \frac{n}{2}$ by Gallai from 1963. The result also yields a better bound on $f_{\ell}(n,4)$ than the one known before.
A lower bound on the number of edges in DP-critical graphs
A graph $G$ is $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) if $χ(G)= k$ ($χ_\ell(G)= k$, $χ_\mathrm{DP}(G)= k$) and for every proper subgraph $G'$ of $G$, $χ(G')<k$ ($χ_\ell(G')< k$, $χ_\mathrm{DP}(G')<k$). Let $f(n, k)$ ($f_\ell(n, k), f_\mathrm{DP}(n,k)$) denote the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) graph. Our main result is that if $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq k+2$, then $$f_\mathrm{DP}(n,k)>\left(k - 1 + \left \lceil \frac{k^2 - 7}{2k-7} \right \rceil^{-1}\right)\frac{n}{2}.$$ This is the first bound on $f_\mathrm{DP}(n,k)$ that is asymptotically better than the well-known bound on $f(n,k)$ by Gallai from 1963. The result also yields a slightly better bound on $f_{\ell}(n,k)$ than the ones known before.
Ore-type conditions for existence of a jellyfish in a graph
The famous Dirac's Theorem states that for each $n\geq 3$ every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ(G)\geq n/2$ has a hamiltonian cycle. When $δ(G)< n/2$, this cannot be guaranteed, but the existence of some other specific subgraphs can be provided. Gargano, Hell, Stacho and Vaccaro proved that every connected $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq (n-1)/3$ contains a spanning {\em spider}, i.e., a spanning tree with at most one vertex of degree at least $3$. Later, Chen, Ferrara, Hu, Jacobson and Liu proved the stronger (and exact) result that for $n\geq 56$ every connected $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq (n-2)/3$ contains a spanning {\em broom}, i.e., a spanning spider obtained by joining the center of a star to an endpoint of a path. They also showed that a $2$-connected graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq (n-2)/3$ and some additional properties contains a spanning {\em jellyfish} which is a graph obtained by gluing the center of a star to a vertex in a cycle disjoint from that star. Note that every spanning jellyfish contains a spanning broom.
The goal of this paper is to prove an exact Ore-type bound which guarantees the existence of a spanning jellyfish: We prove that if $G$ is a $2$-connected graph on $n$ vertices such that every non-adjacent pair of vertices $(u,v)$ satisfies $d(u) + d(v) \geq \frac{2n-3}{3}$, then $G$ has a spanning jellyfish. As corollaries, we obtain strengthenings of two results by Chen et al.: a minimum degree condition guaranteeing the existence of a spanning jellyfish, and an Ore-type sufficient condition for the existence of a spanning broom. The corollaries are sharp for infinitely many $n$. One of the main ingredients of our proof is a modification of the Hopping Lemma due to Woodall.
A hypergraph analog of Dirac's Theorem for long cycles in 2-connected graphs, II: Large uniformities
Dirac proved that each $n$-vertex $2$-connected graph with minimum degree $k$ contains a cycle of length at least $\min\{2k, n\}$. We obtain analogous results for Berge cycles in hypergraphs. Recently, the authors proved an exact lower bound on the minimum degree ensuring a Berge cycle of length at least $\min\{2k, n\}$ in $n$-vertex $r$-uniform $2$-connected hypergraphs when $k \geq r+2$. In this paper we address the case $k \leq r+1$ in which the bounds have a different behavior. We prove that each $n$-vertex $r$-uniform $2$-connected hypergraph $H$ with minimum degree $k$ contains a Berge cycle of length at least $\min\{2k,n,|E(H)|\}$. If $|E(H)|\geq n$, this bound coincides with the bound of the Dirac's Theorem for 2-connected graphs.
Sparse critical graphs for defective $(1,3)$-coloring
A graph $G$ is $(1,3)$-colorable if its vertices can be partitioned into subsets $V_1$ and $V_2$ so that every vertex in $G[V_1]$ has degree at most $1$ and every vertex in $G[V_2]$ has degree at most $3$. We prove that every graph with maximum average degree at most 28/9 is $(1, 3)$-colorable.
Equitable list coloring of planar graphs with given maximum degree
If $L$ is a list assignment of $r$ colors to each vertex of an $n$-vertex graph $G$, then an equitable $L$-coloring of $G$ is a proper coloring of vertices of $G$ from their lists such that no color is used more than $\lceil n/r\rceil$ times. A graph is equitably $r$-choosable if it has an equitable $L$-coloring for every $r$-list assignment $L$. In 2003, Kostochka, Pelsmajer and West (KPW) conjectured that an analog of the famous Hajnal-Szemerédi Theorem on equitable coloring holds for equitable list coloring, namely, that for each positive integer $r$ every graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $r-1$ is equitably $r$-choosable.
The main result of this paper is that for each $r\geq 9$ and each planar graph $G$, a stronger statement holds: if the maximum degree of $G$ is at most $r$, then $G$ is equitably $r$-choosable. In fact, we prove the result for a broader class of graphs -- the class ${\mathcal{B}}$ of the graphs in which each bipartite subgraph $B$ with $|V(B)|\ge3$ has at most $2|V(B)|-4$ edges. Together with some known results, this implies that the KPW Conjecture holds for all graphs in ${\mathcal{B}}$, in particular, for all planar graphs.
Tur\' an number for bushes
Let $ a,b \in {\bf Z}^+$, $r=a + b$, and let $T$ be a tree with parts $U = \{u_1,u_2,\dots,u_s\}$ and $V = \{v_1,v_2,\dots,v_t\}$. Let $U_1, \dots ,U_s$ and $V_1, \dots, V_t$ be disjoint sets, such that {$|U_i|=a$ and $|V_j|=b$ for all $i,j$}. The {\em $(a,b)$-blowup} of $T$ is the $r$-uniform hypergraph with edge set $ {\{U_i \cup V_j : u_iv_j \in E(T)\}.}$ We use the $Δ$-systems method to prove the following Tur\' an-type result. Suppose $a,b,s \in {\bf Z}^+$, $r=a+b\geq 3$,{ $a\geq 2$,} and $T$ is a fixed tree of diameter $4$ in which the degree of the center vertex is $s $. Then there exists a $C=C(r,s ,T)>0$ such that $ |\mathcal{H}|\leq (s -1){n\choose r-1} +Cn^{r-2}$ for every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ {not containing an $(a,b)$-blowup of $T$}. This is {asymptotically exact} when $s \leq |V(T)|/2$. A stability result is also presented.
Sparse critical graphs for defective DP-colorings
An interesting generalization of list coloring is so called DP-coloring (named after Dvořák and Postle). We study $(i,j)$-defective DP-colorings of simple graphs. Define $g_{DP}(i,j,n)$ to be the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex DP-$(i,j)$-critical graph. We prove sharp bounds on $g_{DP}(i,j,n)$ for $i=1,2$ and $j\geq 2i$ for infinitely many $n$.
Equitable coloring of planar graphs with maximum degree at least eight
The Chen-Lih-Wu Conjecture states that each connected graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3$ that is not the complete graph $K_{Δ+1}$ or the complete bipartite graph $K_{Δ,Δ}$ admits an equitable coloring with $Δ$ colors. For planar graphs, the conjecture has been confirmed for $Δ\geq 13$ by Yap and Zhang and for $9\leq Δ\leq 12$ by Nakprasit. In this paper, we present a proof that confirms the conjecture for graphs embeddable into a surface with non-negative Euler characteristic with maximum degree $Δ\geq 9$ and for planar graphs with maximum degree $Δ\geq 8$.

Dirac proved that each $n$-vertex $2$-connected graph with minimum degree at least $k$ contains a cycle of length at least $\min\{2k, n\}$. We consider a hypergraph version of this result. A Berge cycle in a hypergraph is an alternating sequence of distinct vertices and edges $v_1,e_2,v_2, \ldots, e_c, v_1$ such that $\{v_i,v_{i+1}\} \subseteq e_i$ for all $i$ (with indices taken modulo $c$). We prove that for $n \geq k \geq r+2 \geq 5$, every $2$-connected $r$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph with minimum degree at least ${k-1 \choose r-1} + 1$ has a Berge cycle of length at least $\min\{2k, n\}$. The bound is exact for all $k\geq r+2\geq 5$.

We refine a property of $2$-connected graphs described in the classical paper of Dirac from 1952 and use the refined property to somewhat shorten Dirac's proof of the fact that each $2$-connected $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $k$ has a cycle of length at least $\min\{n,2k\}$.

A hypergraph $H$ is hamiltonian-connected if for any distinct vertices $x$ and $y$, $H$ contains a hamiltonian Berge path from $x$ to $y$. We find for all $3\leq r<n$, exact lower bounds on minimum degree $δ(n,r)$ of an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ guaranteeing that $H$ is hamiltonian-connected. It turns out that for $3\leq n/2<r<n$, $δ(n,r)$ is 1 less than the degree bound guaranteeing the existence of a hamiltonian Berge cycle. Moreover, unlike for graphs, for each $r \geq 3$ there exists an $r$-uniform hypergraph that is hamiltonian-connected but does not contain a hamiltonian Berge cycle.

Let $F$ and $H$ be $k$-uniform hypergraphs. We say $H$ is $F$-saturated if $H$ does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $F$, but $H+e$ does for any hyperedge $e\not\in E(H)$. The saturation number of $F$, denoted $\mathrm{sat}_k(n,F)$, is the minimum number of edges in a $F$-saturated $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices. Let $C_3^{(3)}$ denote the $3$-uniform loose cycle on $3$ edges. In this work, we prove that
\[
\left(\frac{4}3+o(1)\right)n\leq \mathrm{sat}_3(n,C_3^{(3)})\leq \frac{3}2n+O(1).
\]
This is the first non-trivial result on the saturation number for a fixed short hypergraph cycle.

The famous Dirac's Theorem gives an exact bound on the minimum degree of an $n$-vertex graph guaranteeing the existence of a hamiltonian cycle. We prove exact bounds of similar type for hamiltonian Berge cycles in $r$-uniform, $n$-vertex hypergraphs for all $3\leq r< n$. The bounds are different for $r<n/2$ and $r\geq n/2$. We also give bounds on the minimum degree guaranteeing existence of Berge cycles of length at least $k$ in such hypergraphs; the bounds are exact for all $k\geq n/2$.
