The strong chromatic index of $K_{t,t}$-free graphs
A strong edge coloring of a graph $G$ is an edge coloring $φ\,:\,E(G) \rightarrow \mathbb N$ such that each color class forms an induced matching in $G$. The strong chromatic index of $G$, written $χ'_s(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed for a strong edge coloring of $G$. Erdős and Nešetřil conjectured in 1985 that if $G$ has maximum degree $d$, then $χ'_s(G) \leq \frac 54 d^2$.
Mahdian showed in 2000 that if $G$ is $C_4$-free, then $χ'_s(G) \leq (2+o(1)) \frac{d^2}{\log d}$, and he conjectured that the same upper bound holds for $K_{t,t}$-free graphs. In this paper, we prove this conjecture and improve upon it to show the following: every $K_{t,t}$-free graph $G$ of maximum degree $d$ satisfies $χ'_s(G) \leq (1+o(1)) \frac{d^2}{\log d}$. We employ a variant of the Rödl nibble method to prove this result. The key new ingredient in our adaptation of the method is an application of the Kővári-Sós-Turán theorem to show that $H := L(G)^2$ satisfies certain structural properties. These properties, in conjunction with a variant of Talagrand's inequality to handle exceptional outcomes, allow us to concentrate the sizes of certain vertex sets through the nibble, even when these vertex sets have order smaller than the maximum codegree of $H$. We encapsulate these structural properties into a more general statement on list coloring that we believe to be of independent interest. In light of the conjectured computational threshold for coloring random graphs arising in average-case complexity theory, we suspect that our result is best possible using this approach.
A lower bound on the number of edges in DP-critical graphs. II. Four colors
A graph $G$ is $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) if $χ(G)= k$ ($χ_\ell(G)= k$, $χ_\mathrm{DP}(G)= k$) and for every proper subgraph $G'$ of $G$, $χ(G')<k$ ($χ_\ell(G')< k$, $χ_\mathrm{DP}(G')<k$). Let $f(n, k)$ ($f_\ell(n, k), f_\mathrm{DP}(n,k)$) denote the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) graph. The main result of this paper is that if $n\geq 6$ and $n\not\in\{7,10\}$, then $$f_\mathrm{DP}(n,4)>\left(3 + \frac{1}{5} \right) \frac{n}{2}. $$ This is the first bound on $f_\mathrm{DP}(n,4)$ that is asymptotically better than the well-known bound $f(n,4)\geq \left(3 + \frac{1}{13} \right) \frac{n}{2}$ by Gallai from 1963. The result also yields a better bound on $f_{\ell}(n,4)$ than the one known before.
A lower bound on the number of edges in DP-critical graphs
A graph $G$ is $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) if $χ(G)= k$ ($χ_\ell(G)= k$, $χ_\mathrm{DP}(G)= k$) and for every proper subgraph $G'$ of $G$, $χ(G')<k$ ($χ_\ell(G')< k$, $χ_\mathrm{DP}(G')<k$). Let $f(n, k)$ ($f_\ell(n, k), f_\mathrm{DP}(n,k)$) denote the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) graph. Our main result is that if $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq k+2$, then $$f_\mathrm{DP}(n,k)>\left(k - 1 + \left \lceil \frac{k^2 - 7}{2k-7} \right \rceil^{-1}\right)\frac{n}{2}.$$ This is the first bound on $f_\mathrm{DP}(n,k)$ that is asymptotically better than the well-known bound on $f(n,k)$ by Gallai from 1963. The result also yields a slightly better bound on $f_{\ell}(n,k)$ than the ones known before.
Sparse critical graphs for defective $(1,3)$-coloring
A graph $G$ is $(1,3)$-colorable if its vertices can be partitioned into subsets $V_1$ and $V_2$ so that every vertex in $G[V_1]$ has degree at most $1$ and every vertex in $G[V_2]$ has degree at most $3$. We prove that every graph with maximum average degree at most 28/9 is $(1, 3)$-colorable.
Injective edge colorings of degenerate graphs and the oriented chromatic number
Given a graph $G$, an injective edge-coloring of $G$ is a function $ψ:E(G) \rightarrow \mathbb N$ such that if $ψ(e) = ψ(e')$, then no third edge joins an endpoint of $e$ and an endpoint of $e'$. The injective chromatic index of a graph $G$, written $χ_{inj}'(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed for an injective edge coloring of $G$. In this paper, we investigate the injective chromatic index of certain classes of degenerate graphs. First, we show that if $G$ is a $d$-degenerate graph of maximum degree $Δ$, then $χ_{inj}'(G) = O(d^3 \log Δ)$. Next, we show that if $G$ is a graph of Euler genus $g$, then $χ_{inj}'(G) \leq (3+o(1))g$, which is tight when $G$ is a clique. Finally, we show that the oriented chromatic number of a graph is at most exponential in its injective chromatic index. Using this fact, we prove that the oriented chromatic number of a graph embedded on a surface of Euler genus $g$ has oriented chromatic number at most $O(g^{6400})$, improving the previously known upper bound of $2^{O(g^{\frac{1}{2} + ε})}$ and resolving a conjecture of Aravind and Subramanian.
Sparse critical graphs for defective DP-colorings
An interesting generalization of list coloring is so called DP-coloring (named after Dvořák and Postle). We study $(i,j)$-defective DP-colorings of simple graphs. Define $g_{DP}(i,j,n)$ to be the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex DP-$(i,j)$-critical graph. We prove sharp bounds on $g_{DP}(i,j,n)$ for $i=1,2$ and $j\geq 2i$ for infinitely many $n$.

A coloring of edges of a graph $G$ is injective if for any two distinct edges $e_1$ and $e_2$, the colors of $e_1$ and $e_2$ are distinct if they are at distance $1$ in $G$ or in a common triangle. Naturally, the injective chromatic index of $G$, $χ'_{inj}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed for an injective edge-coloring of $G$. We study how large can be the injective chromatic index of $G$ in terms of maximum degree of $G$ when we have restrictions on girth and/or chromatic number of $G$. We also compare our bounds with analogous bounds on the strong chromatic index.

DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring developed recently by Dvořák and Postle. We introduce and study $(i,j)$-defective DP-colorings of simple graphs. Let $g_{DP}(i,j,n)$ be the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex DP-$(i,j)$-critical graph. In this paper we determine sharp bound on $g_{DP}(i,j,n)$ for each $i\geq3$ and $j\geq 2i+1$ for infinitely many $n$.

DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring developed recently by Dvorak and Postle. We introduce and study $(i,j)$-defective DP-colorings of multigraphs. We concentrate on sparse multigraphs and consider $f_{DP}(i,j,n)$ --- the minimum number of edges that may have an $n$-vertex $(i,j)$-critical multigraph, that is, a multigraph $G$ that has no $(i,j)$-defective DP-coloring but whose every proper subgraph has such a coloring. For every $i$ and $j$, we find linear lower bounds on $f_{DP}(i,j,n)$ that are exact for infinitely many $n$.
