The strong chromatic index of $K_{t,t}$-free graphs
A strong edge coloring of a graph $G$ is an edge coloring $φ\,:\,E(G) \rightarrow \mathbb N$ such that each color class forms an induced matching in $G$. The strong chromatic index of $G$, written $χ'_s(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed for a strong edge coloring of $G$. Erdős and Nešetřil conjectured in 1985 that if $G$ has maximum degree $d$, then $χ'_s(G) \leq \frac 54 d^2$. Mahdian showed in 2000 that if $G$ is $C_4$-free, then $χ'_s(G) \leq (2+o(1)) \frac{d^2}{\log d}$, and he conjectured that the same upper bound holds for $K_{t,t}$-free graphs. In this paper, we prove this conjecture and improve upon it to show the following: every $K_{t,t}$-free graph $G$ of maximum degree $d$ satisfies $χ'_s(G) \leq (1+o(1)) \frac{d^2}{\log d}$. We employ a variant of the Rödl nibble method to prove this result. The key new ingredient in our adaptation of the method is an application of the Kővári-Sós-Turán theorem to show that $H := L(G)^2$ satisfies certain structural properties. These properties, in conjunction with a variant of Talagrand's inequality to handle exceptional outcomes, allow us to concentrate the sizes of certain vertex sets through the nibble, even when these vertex sets have order smaller than the maximum codegree of $H$. We encapsulate these structural properties into a more general statement on list coloring that we believe to be of independent interest. In light of the conjectured computational threshold for coloring random graphs arising in average-case complexity theory, we suspect that our result is best possible using this approach.

Graphs of maximum average degree less than $\frac {11}{3}$ are flexibly $4$-choosable
We consider the flexible list coloring problem, in which we have a graph $G$, a color list assignment $L:V(G) \rightarrow 2^{\mathbb N}$, and a set $U \subseteq V(G)$ of vertices such that each $u \in U$ has a preferred color $p(u) \in L(u)$. Given a constant $\varepsilon > 0$, the problem asks for an $L$-coloring of $G$ in which at least $\varepsilon |U|$ vertices in $U$ receive their preferred color. We use a method of reducible subgraphs to approach this problem. We develop a vertex-partitioning tool that, when used with a new reducible subgraph framework, allows us to define large reducible subgraphs. Using this new tool, we show that if $G$ has maximum average degree less than $\frac{11}{3}$, a list $L(v)$ of size $4$ at each $v \in V(G)$, and a set $U \subseteq V(G)$ of vertices with preferred colors, then there exists an $L$-coloring of $G$ for which at least $2^{-145} |U|$ vertices of $U$ receive their preferred color.

Flexible list coloring of graphs with maximum average degree less than $3$
In the flexible list coloring problem, we consider a graph $G$ and a color list assignment $L$ on $G$, as well as a subset $U \subseteq V(G)$ for which each $u \in U$ has a preferred color $p(u) \in L(u)$. Our goal is to find a proper $L$-coloring $φ$ of $G$ such that $φ(u) = p(u)$ for at least $ε|U|$ vertices $u \in U$. We say that $G$ is $ε$-flexibly $k$-choosable if for every $k$-size list assignment $L$ on $G$ and every subset of vertices with coloring preferences, $G$ has a proper $L$-coloring that satisfies an $ε$ proportion of these coloring preferences. Dvořák, Norin, and Postle [Journal of Graph Theory, 2019] asked whether every $d$-degenerate graph is $ε$-flexibly $(d+1)$-choosable for some constant $ε= ε(d) > 0$. In this paper, we prove that there exists a constant $ε> 0$ such that every graph with maximum average degree less than $3$ is $ε$-flexibly $3$-choosable, which gives a large class of $2$-degenerate graphs which are $ε$-flexibly $(d+1)$-choosable. In particular, our results imply a theorem of Dvořák, Masařík, Musílek, and Pangrác [Journal of Graph Theory, 2020] stating that every planar graph of girth $6$ is $ε$-flexibly $3$-choosable for some constant $ε> 0$. To prove our result, we generalize the existing reducible subgraph framework traditionally used for flexible list coloring to allow reducible subgraphs of arbitrarily large order.
Rainbow Connection for Complete Multipartite Graphs

A path in an edge-colored graph is said to be rainbow if no color repeats on it. An edge-colored graph is said to be rainbow $k$-connected if every pair of vertices is connected by $k$ internally disjoint rainbow paths. The rainbow $k$-connection number $\mathrm{rc}_k(G)$ is the minimum number of colors $\ell$ such that there exists a coloring with $\ell$ colors that makes $G$ rainbow $k$-connected. Let $f(k,t)$ be the minimum integer such that every $t$-partite graph with part sizes at least $f(k,t)$ has $\mathrm{rc}_k(G) \le 4$ if $t=2$ and $\mathrm{rc}_k(G) \le 3$ if $t \ge 3$. Answering a question of Fujita, Liu and Magnant, we show that \[ f(k,t) = \left\lceil \frac{2k}{t-1} \right\rceil \] for all $k\geq 2$, $t\geq 2$. We also give some conditions for which $\mathrm{rc}_k(G) \le 3$ if $t=2$ and $\mathrm{rc}_k(G) \le 2$ if $t \ge 3$.
