Forbidden stars in multidimensional $0$-$1$ matrices and visibility of lattice points
A $d$-dimensional $0$-$1$ matrix $M$ of size $n_1\times n_2\times \dots \times n_d$ can be considered as a Boolean function
$M: B(n_1\times n_2\times \dots \times n_d) \to \{ 0,1\}$, where $B$ is the $d$-dimensional box of lattice points $(x_1, \dots, , x_d)\in Z^d$ with $0\leq x_i \leq n_i-1$, $1\leq i\leq d$. The $0$-$1$ matrix $M$ can also be described as a subset $P:=P(M)$ of $B$ such that $x\in P$ if and only if $M(x)=1$. A $k$-star with center $p$ in $M$ corresponds to a $(k+1)$-element subset $\{ p, p_1, \dots , p_k\} \subset B$ such that $p$ and $p_i$ differ only in one coordinate (for all $1\leq i\leq k$) and these $k$ coordinates are distinct.
Here we consider the problem of determining the maximum number of $1$-entries of a $0$-$1$ matrix $M$ of dimension $d$ and size $n\times n \times \dots \times n$ that avoids all $k$-stars.
Our main results are the asymptotical solution of the problem for every $d$ and $k$ (as $n\to \infty$), very close bounds for $k=d$, and the exact solution of the $d=k=3$ case.
This problem has connections to several other areas of discrete mathematics, including $k$-partite hypergraphs, independent set problems, dominating set problems and covering codes. One of our tools (concerning maximal packings of induced copies of a given hypergraph) might have independent interest.
Clique number of xor-powers of Kneser graphs
Let $f_\ell(n, k)$ denote the clique number of the xor-product of $\ell$ isomorphic Kneser graphs KG(n,k). Alon and Lubetzky investigated the case of complete graphs as a coding theory problem and showed $f_\ell(n,1)\leq \ell n +1$. Imolay, Kocsis, and Schweitzer proved that $f_2(n,k)\leq n/k +c(k)$.
Here, the order of magnitude of $c(k)$ is determined to be $Θ\left( k \binom{2k}{k} \right)$. By explicit constructions and by an algebraic proof, it is shown that $\ell n- 2\ell-1 \leq f_\ell(n,1)\leq \ell n-\ell+1$ (for all $n \geq 1$ and $\ell\geq 3$). Finally, it is proved that the order of magnitude of $f$ lies between $Ω\left(n^{\left\lfloor \log_2(\ell+1)\right\rfloor}\right)$ and $O\left(n^{\left\lfloor \frac{\ell+1}{2} \right\rfloor} \right)$ (as $\ell$, $k$ are given and $n\to \infty$).
We conjecture that the lower bound gives the correct exponent.
Triangle-free triple systems
There are four non-isomorphic configurations of triples that can form a triangle in a $3$-uniform hypergraph. Forbidding different combinations of these four configurations, fifteen extremal problems can be defined, several of which already appeared in the literature in some different context. Here we systematically study all of these problems solving the new cases exactly or asymptotically. In many cases we also characterize the extremal constructions.
Tur\' an number for bushes
Let $ a,b \in {\bf Z}^+$, $r=a + b$, and let $T$ be a tree with parts $U = \{u_1,u_2,\dots,u_s\}$ and $V = \{v_1,v_2,\dots,v_t\}$. Let $U_1, \dots ,U_s$ and $V_1, \dots, V_t$ be disjoint sets, such that {$|U_i|=a$ and $|V_j|=b$ for all $i,j$}. The {\em $(a,b)$-blowup} of $T$ is the $r$-uniform hypergraph with edge set $ {\{U_i \cup V_j : u_iv_j \in E(T)\}.}$ We use the $Δ$-systems method to prove the following Tur\' an-type result. Suppose $a,b,s \in {\bf Z}^+$, $r=a+b\geq 3$,{ $a\geq 2$,} and $T$ is a fixed tree of diameter $4$ in which the degree of the center vertex is $s $. Then there exists a $C=C(r,s ,T)>0$ such that $ |\mathcal{H}|\leq (s -1){n\choose r-1} +Cn^{r-2}$ for every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ {not containing an $(a,b)$-blowup of $T$}. This is {asymptotically exact} when $s \leq |V(T)|/2$. A stability result is also presented.

In this entry point into the subject, combining two elementary proofs, we decrease the gap between the upper and lower bounds by $0.2\%$ in a classical combinatorial number theory problem. We show that the maximum size of a Sidon set of $\{ 1, 2, \ldots, n\}$ is at most $\sqrt{n}+ 0.998n^{1/4}$ for sufficiently large $n$.
Shadows of 3-uniform hypergraphs under a minimum degree condition
We prove a minimum degree version of the Kruskal--Katona theorem: given $d\ge 1/4$ and a triple system $F$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $d\binom n2$, we obtain asymptotically tight lower bounds for the size of its shadow. Equivalently, for $t\ge n/2-1$, we asymptotically determine the minimum size of a graph on $n$ vertices, in which every vertex is contained in at least $\binom t2$ triangles. This can be viewed as a variant of the Rademacher--Turán problem.
Turán number of special four cycles in triple systems
A {\em special four-cycle } $F$ in a triple system consists of four triples {\em inducing } a $C_4$. This means that $F$ has four special vertices $v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4$ and four triples in the form $w_iv_iv_{i+1}$ (indices are understood $\pmod 4$) where the $w_j$s are not necessarily distinct but disjoint from $\{v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4\}$. There are seven non-isomorphic special four-cycles, their family is denoted by $\cal{F}$. Our main result implies that the Turán number $\text{ex}(n,{\cal{F}})=Θ(n^{3/2})$. In fact, we prove more, $\text{ex}(n,\{F_1,F_2,F_3\})=Θ(n^{3/2})$, where the $F_i$-s are specific members of $\cal{F}$. This extends previous bounds for the Turán number of triple systems containing no Berge four cycles.
We also study $\text{ex}(n,{\cal{A}})$ for all ${\cal{A}}\subseteq {\cal{F}}$. For 16 choices of $\cal{A}$ we show that $\text{ex}(n,{\cal{A}})=Θ(n^{3/2})$, for 92 choices of $\cal{A}$ we find that $\text{ex}(n,{\cal{A}})=Θ(n^2)$ and the other 18 cases remain unsolved.
Extremal problems for pairs of triangles
A convex geometric hypergraph or cgh consists of a family of subsets of a strictly convex set of points in the plane. There are eight pairwise nonisomorphic cgh's consisting of two disjoint triples. These were studied at length by Braß (2004) and by Aronov, Dujmović, Morin, Ooms, and da Silveira (2019). We determine the extremal functions exactly for seven of the eight configurations.
The above results are about cyclically ordered hypergraphs. We extend some of them for triangle systems with vertices from a non-convex set. We also solve problems posed by P. Frankl, Holmsen and Kupavskii (2020), in particular, we determine the exact maximum size of an intersecting family of triangles whose vertices come from a set of $n$ points in the plane.
Large monochromatic components in almost complete graphs and bipartite graphs
Gyárfas proved that every coloring of the edges of $K_n$ with $t+1$ colors contains a monochromatic connected component of size at least $n/t$. Later, Gyárfás and Sárközy asked for which values of $γ=γ(t)$ does the following strengthening for almost complete graphs hold: if $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $(1-γ)n$, then every $(t+1)$-edge coloring of $G$ contains a monochromatic component of size at least $n/t$. We show $γ= 1/(6t^3)$ suffices, improving a result of DeBiasio, Krueger, and Sárközy.
Extremal problems for hypergraph blowups of trees
In this paper we present a novel approach in extremal set theory which may be viewed as an asymmetric version of Katona's permutation method. We use it to find more Turán numbers of hypergraphs in the Erdős--Ko--Rado range.
An $(a,b)$-path $P$ of length $2k-1$ consists of $2k-1$ sets of size $r=a+b$ as follows. Take $k$ pairwise disjoint $a$-element sets $A_0, A_2, \dots, A_{2k-2}$ and other $k$ pairwise disjoint $b$-element sets $B_1, B_3, \dots, B_{2k-1}$ and order them linearly as $A_0, B_1, A_2, B_3, A_4\dots$. Define the (hyper)edges of $P_{2k-1}(a,b)$ as the sets of the form $A_i\cup B_{i+1}$ and $B_j\cup A_{j+1}$. The members of $P$ can be represented as $r$-element intervals of the $ak+bk$ element underlying set.
Our main result is about hypergraphs that are blowups of trees, and implies that for fixed $k,a,b$, as $n\to \infty$ \[ {\rm ex}_r(n,P_{2k-1}(a,b)) = (k - 1){n \choose r - 1} + o(n^{r - 1}).\]
This generalizes the Erdős--Gallai theorem for graphs which is the case of $a=b=1$. We also determine the asymptotics when $a+b$ is even; the remaining cases are still open.
Induced Turán problems and traces of hypergraphs
Let $F$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ contains an induced Berge $F$ if the vertices of $F$ can be embedded to $H$ (e.g., $V(F)\subseteq V(H)$) and there exists an injective mapping $f$ from the edges of $F$ to the hyperedges of $H$ such that $f(xy) \cap V(F) = \{x,y\}$ holds for each edge $xy$ of $F$. In other words, $H$ contains $F$ as a trace.
Let $ex_{r}(n,B_{ind} F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with no induced Berge $F$. Let $ex(n,K_r, F)$ denote the maximum number of $K_r$'s in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We show that these two Turán type functions are strongly related.
Berge cycles in non-uniform hypergraphs
We consider two extremal problems for set systems without long Berge cycles. First we give Dirac-type minimum degree conditions that force long Berge cycles. Next we give an upper bound for the number of hyperedges in a hypergraph with bounded circumference. Both results are best possible in infinitely many cases.
Problems and results on 1-cross intersecting set pair systems
The notion of cross intersecting set pair system of size $m$, $\Big(\{A_i\}_{i=1}^m, \{B_i\}_{i=1}^m\Big)$ with $A_i\cap B_i=\emptyset$ and $A_i\cap B_j\ne\emptyset$, was introduced by Bollobás and it became an important tool of extremal combinatorics. His classical result states that $m\le {a+b\choose a}$ if $|A_i|\le a$ and $|B_i|\le b$ for each $i$.
Our central problem is to see how this bound changes with the additional condition $|A_i\cap B_j|=1$ for $i\ne j$. Such a system is called $1$-cross intersecting. We show that the maximum size of a $1$-cross intersecting set pair system is
-- at least $5^{n/2}$ for $n$ even, $a=b=n$,
-- equal to $\bigl(\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor+1\bigr)\bigl(\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil+1\bigr)$ if $a=2$ and $b=n\ge 4$,
-- at most $|\cup_{i=1}^m A_i|$,
-- asymptotically $n^2$ if $\{A_i\}$ is a linear hypergraph ($|A_i\cap A_j|\le 1$ for $i\ne j$),
-- asymptotically ${1\over 2}n^2$ if $\{A_i\}$ and $\{B_i\}$ are both linear hypergraphs.
Hypergraphs without exponents
Here we give a short, concise proof for the following result. There exists a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ (for $k\geq 5$) without exponent, i.e., when the Turán function is not polynomial in $n$. More precisely, we have $ex(n,H)=o(n^{k-1})$ but it exceeds $n^{k-1-c}$ for any positive $c$ for $n> n_0(k,c)$.
This is an extension (and simplification) of a result of Frankl and the first author from 1987 where the case $k=5$ was proven. We conjecture that it is true for $k\in \{3, 4\}$ as well.
On 2-connected hypergraphs with no long cycles
We give an upper bound for the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex 2-connected $r$-uniform hypergraph with no Berge cycle of length $k$ or greater, where $n\geq k \geq 4r\geq 12$. For $n$ large with respect to $r$ and $k$, this bound is sharp and is significantly stronger than the bound without restrictions on connectivity. It turned out that it is simpler to prove the bound for the broader class of Sperner families where the size of each set is at most $r$. For such families, our bound is sharp for all $n\geq k\geq r\geq 3$.
Ordered and convex geometric trees with linear extremal function
The extremal functions $ex_{\rightarrow}(n,F)$ and $ex_{\cir}(n,F)$ for ordered and convex geometric acyclic graphs $F$ have been extensively investigated by a number of researchers. Basic questions are to determine when $ex_{\rightarrow}(n,F)$ and $ex_{\cir}(n,F)$ are linear in $n$, the latter posed by Braß-Károlyi-Valtr in 2003. In this paper, we answer both these questions for every tree $F$.
We give a forbidden subgraph characterization for a family $\cal T$ of ordered trees with $k$ edges, and show that $ex_{\rightarrow}(n,T) = (k - 1)n - {k \choose 2}$ for all $n \geq k + 1$ when $T \in {\cal T}$ and $ex_{\rightarrow}(n,T) = Ω(n\log n)$ for $T \not\in {\cal T}$. We also describe the family of the convex geometric trees with linear Tur\' an number and show that for every convex geometric tree $F$ not in this family, $ex_{\cir}(n,F)= Ω(n\log \log n)$.
Nearly subadditive sequences
We show that the de Bruijn-Erdős condition for the error term in their improvement of Fekete's Lemma is not only sufficient but also necessary in the following strong sense. Suppose that given a sequence $0\leq f(1)\leq f(2)\leq f(3)\leq \dots $ such that \begin{equation}\sum_{ n=1}^{\infty} f(n)/n^2 = \infty.
\end{equation} Then, there exists a sequence $\{b(n)\}_{n=1,2,\dots}$ satisfying \begin{equation}\label{eq1} b(n+m) \leq b(n) + b(m) + f(n+m)
\end{equation} such that the sequence of slopes $\{ b(n)/n\}_{n=1,2,\dots}$ takes every rational number.
When the series is bounded we improve their result as follows. If there exist $N$ and real $μ>1$ such that near $f$-subadditivity holds for all pairs $(n,m)$ with $N\leq n\leq m \leq μn$, then $\lim_n b(n)/n $ exists.
Hypergraphs not containing a tight tree with a bounded trunk ~II: 3-trees with a trunk of size 2
A tight $r$-tree $T$ is an $r$-uniform hypergraph that has an edge-ordering $e_1, e_2, \dots, e_t$ such that for each $i\geq 2$, $e_i$ has a vertex $v_i$ that does not belong to any previous edge and $e_i-v_i$ is contained in $e_j$ for some $j<i$. Kalai conjectured in 1984 that every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with more than $\frac{t-1}{r}\binom{n}{r-1}$ edges contains every tight $r$-tree $T$ with $t$ edges.
A trunk $T'$ of a tight $r$-tree $T$ is a tight subtree $T'$ of $T$ such that vertices in $V(T)\setminus V(T')$ are leaves in $T$. Kalai's Conjecture was proved in 1987 for tight $r$-trees that have a trunk of size one. In a previous paper we proved an asymptotic version of Kalai's Conjecture for all tight $r$-trees that have a trunk of bounded size. In this paper we continue that work to establish the exact form of Kalai's Conjecture for all tight $3$-trees with at least $20$ edges that have a trunk of size two.
Avoiding long Berge cycles II, exact bounds for all $n$
Let $EG_r(n,k)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with no Berge cycles of length $k$ or longer. In the first part of this work, we have found exact values of $EG_r(n,k)$ and described the structure of extremal hypergraphs for the case when $k-2$ divides $n-1$ and $k\geq r+3$. In this paper we determine $EG_r(n,k)$ and describe the extremal hypergraphs for all $n$ when $k\geq r+4$.
Extremal problems on ordered and convex geometric hypergraphs
An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered, and a convex geometric hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is cyclically ordered. Extremal problems for ordered and convex geometric graphs have a rich history with applications to a variety of problems in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we consider analogous extremal problems for uniform hypergraphs, and discover a general partitioning phenomenon which allows us to determine the order of magnitude of the extremal function for various ordered and convex geometric hypergraphs. A special case is the ordered $n$-vertex $r$-graph $F$ consisting of two disjoint sets $e$ and $f$ whose vertices alternate in the ordering. We show that for all $n \geq 2r + 1$, the maximum number of edges in an ordered $n$-vertex $r$-graph not containing $F$ is exactly \[ {n \choose r} - {n - r \choose r}.\] This could be considered as an ordered version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem, and generalizes earlier results of Capoyleas and Pach and Aronov-Dujmovič-Morin-Ooms-da Silveira.
