Rational exponents near 3/2
Given a graph $H$, the extremal number $ex(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph not containing $H$ as a subgraph. The well-known rational exponents conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits states that for any rational $γ\in (1,2)$ there exists a single bipartite graph $H$ satisfying $ex(n,H)=Θ(n^γ)$. Among other results, the conjecture has been verified for all $γ=1+a/b$, where $b>a^2$, by Jiang and Qiu and for all $γ=2-a/b$, where $b>\max\{a, (a-1)^2\}$, by Conlon and Janzer. In this paper, we establish the rational exponents conjecture for many $γ$ near the center of the interval, namely, for all $γ=1+\frac{rt-1}{2rt+2r}$, where $r,t$ are natural numbers satisfying $t\geq 2$, $r\geq 2t+3$.

Induced rational exponents near two
Given a bipartite graph $H$ and a natural number $s$, let $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H,s)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that contains neither $K_{s,s}$ nor an induced copy of $H$. Hunter, Milojević, Sudakov, and Tomon conjectured that $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H,s)=O_{H,s}(\mathrm{ex}(n,H))$ whenever $H$ is connected. Motivated by this conjecture and the rational exponents conjecture, Dong, Gao, Li, and Liu conjectured that for every rational $r\in (1,2)$ there is a bipartite graph $H$ and an $s_0$ such that $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H,s)=Θ(n^r)$ for all $s\geq s_0$. We prove that the latter conjecture holds for all rationals $r=2-a/b$, where $a,b\in\mathbb{N}$ satisfy $b\geq \max\{a,(a-1)^2\}$. Our result extends a well-known result of Conlon and Janzer to the induced setting and adds more evidence to support the former conjecture.

On the number of families avoiding a subposet
In this paper we show that for any poset $P$ that is not an antichain, the number of induced $P$-free families in the Boolean lattice $2^{[n]}$ is at most $ 2^{O(\mathrm{La}^*(n,P))}$, where $\mathrm{La}^*(n,P)$ denotes the the largest size of an induced $P$-free subfamily of $2^{[n]}$. We also obtain related supersaturation results.

Regularization and asymmetric extremal numbers of subdivisions
Given a real $μ\geq 1$, a graph $H$ is $μ$-almost-regular if $Δ(H)\leq μδ(H)$. The celebrated regularization theorem of Erdős and Simonovits states that for every real $0<\varepsilon<1$ there exists a real $μ=μ(\varepsilon)$ such that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $Ω(n^{1+\varepsilon})$ edges contains an $m$-vertex $μ$-almost-regular subgraph $H$ with $Ω(m^{1+\varepsilon})$ edges for some $n^{\varepsilon\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\varepsilon}}\leq m\leq n$. We develop an enhanced version of it in which the subgraph $H$ also has average degree at least $Ω(\frac{d(G)}{\log n})$, where $d(G)$ is the average degree of $G$. We then give a bipartite analogue of the enhanced regularization theorem. Using the bipartite regularization theorem, we establish upper bounds on the maximum number of edges in a bipartite graph with part sizes $m$ and $n$ that does not contain a $2k$-subdivision of $K_{s,t}$ or $2k$-multi-subdivisions of $K_p$, thus extending the corresponding work of Janzer to the bipartite setting for even subdivisions. We show these upper bounds are tight up to a constant factor for infinitely many pairs $(m,n)$. The problem for estimating the maximum number of edges in a bipartite graph with part sizes $m$ and $n$ that does not contain a $(2k+1)$-subdivision of $K_{s,t}$ remains open.

On the number of H-free hypergraphs
Two central problems in extremal combinatorics are concerned with estimating the number $ex(n,H)$, the size of the largest $H$-free hypergraph on $n$ vertices, and the number $forb(n,H)$ of $H$-free hypergraph on $n$ vertices. While it is known that $forb(n,H)=2^{(1+o(1))ex(n,H)}$ for $k$-uniform hypergraphs that are not $k$-partite, estimates for hypergraphs that are $k$-partite (or degenerate) are not nearly as tight. In a recent breakthrough, Ferber, McKinley, and Samotij proved that for many degenerate hypergraphs $H$, $forb(n, H) = 2^{O(ex(n,H))}$. However, there are few known instances of degenerate hypergraphs $H$ for which $forb(n,H)=2^{(1+o(1))ex(n,H)}$ holds. In this paper, we show that $forb(n,H)=2^{(1+o(1))ex(n,H)}$ holds for a wide class of degenerate hypergraphs known as $2$-contractible hypertrees. This is the first known infinite family of degenerate hypergraphs $H$ for which $forb(n,H)=2^{(1+o(1))ex(n,H)}$ holds. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain a surprisingly sharp estimate of $forb(n,C^{(k)}_\ell)=2^{(\lfloor\frac{\ell-1}{2}\rfloor+o(1))\binom{n}{k-1}}$ for the $k$-uniform linear $\ell$-cycle, for all pairs $k\geq 5, \ell\geq 3$, thus settling a question of Balogh, Narayanan, and Skokan affirmatively for all $k\geq 5, \ell\geq 3$. Our methods also lead to some related sharp results on the corresponding random Turan problem. As a key ingredient of our proofs, we develop a novel supersaturation variant of the delta systems method for set systems, which may be of independent interest.

Tree Posets: Supersaturation, Enumeration, and Randomness
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a powerful tool for embedding any tree poset $P$ of height $k$ in the Boolean lattice which allows us to solve several open problems in the area. We show that: * If $H$ is a family in $B_n$ with $|H|\ge (q-1+\varepsilon){n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ for some $q\ge k$, then $H$ contains on the order of as many induced copies of $P$ as is contained in the $q$ middle layers of the Boolean lattice. This generalizes results of Bukh and of Boehnlein and Jiang which guaranteed a single such copy in non-induced and induced settings respectively. * The number of induced $P$-free families of $B_n$ is $2^{(k-1+o(1)){n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}}$, strengthening recent independent work of Balogh, Garcia, Wigal who obtained the same bounds in the non-induced setting. * The largest induced $P$-free subset of a $p$-random subset of $B_n$ for $p\gg n^{-1}$ has size at most $(k-1+o(1))p{n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}$, generalizing previous work of Balogh, Mycroft, and Treglown and of Collares and Morris for the case when $P$ is a chain. All three results are asymptotically tight and give affirmative answers to general conjectures of Gerbner, Nagy, Patkós, and Vizer in the case of tree posets.

Balanced supersaturation and Turan numbers in random graphs
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2024:3, 26pp • View PublicationBIB
In a ground-breaking paper solving a conjecture of Erdős on the number of $n$-vertex graphs not containing a given even cycle, Morris and Saxton \cite{MS} made a broad conjecture on so-called balanced supersaturation property of a bipartite graph $H$. Ferber, McKinley, and Samotij \cite{FMS} established a weaker version of this conjecture and applied it to derive far-reaching results on the enumeration problem of $H$-free graphs. In this paper, we show that Morris and Saxton's conjecture holds under a very mild assumption about $H$, which is widely believed to hold whenever $H$ contains a cycle. We then use our theorem to obtain enumeration results and general upper bounds on the Turán number of a bipartite $H$ in the random graph $G(n,p)$, the latter being first of its kind.

Tree-degenerate graphs and nested dependent random choice
Published • View PublicationBIB
The celebrated dependent random choice lemma states that in a bipartite graph an average vertex (weighted by its degree) has the property that almost all small subsets $S$ in its neighborhood has common neighborhood almost as large as in the random graph of the same edge-density. Two well-known applications of the lemma are as follows. The first is a theorem of Füredi and of Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov showing that the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph not containing a fixed bipartite graph with maximum degree at most $r$ on one side is $O(n^{2-1/r})$. This was recently extended by Grzesik, Janzer and Nagy to the family of so-called $(r,t)$-blowups of a tree. A second application is a theorem of Conlon, Fox, and Sudakov, confirming a special case of a conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits and of Sidorenko, showing that if $H$ is a bipartite graph that contains a vertex complete to the other part and $G$ is a graph then the probability that the uniform random mapping from $V(H)$ to $V(G)$ is a homomorphismis at least $\left[\frac{2|E(G)|}{|V(G)|^2}\right]^{|E(H)|}$. In this note, we introduce a nested variant of the dependent random choice lemma, which might be of independent interest. We then apply it to obtain a common extension of the theorem of Conlon, Fox, and Sudakov and the theorem of Grzesik, Janzer, and Nagy, regarding Turán and Sidorenko properties of so-called tree-degenerate graphs.

Bipartite-ness under smooth conditions

Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs, the {\it Zarankiewicz number} $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $m$ by $n$ bipartite graph $G$ that does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph (such $G$ is called {\it $\mathcal{F}$-free}). For $1\leq β<α<2$, a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs is $(α,β)$-{\it smooth} if for some $ρ>0$ and every $m\leq n$, $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})=ρm n^{α-1}+O(n^β)$. Motivated by their work on a conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits on compactness and a classic result of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós, in \cite{AKSV} Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte proved that for any $(α,β)$-smooth family $\mathcal{F}$, there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$, any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup\{C_k\}$-free graph with minimum degree at least $ρ(\frac{2n}{5}+o(n))^{α-1}$ is bipartite. In this paper, we strengthen their result by showing that for every real $δ>0$, there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$, any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup\{C_k\}$-free graph with minimum degree at least $δn^{α-1}$ is bipartite. Furthermore, our result holds under a more relaxed notion of smoothness, which include the families $\mathcal{F}$ consisting of the single graph $K_{s,t}$ when $t\gg s$. We also prove an analogous result for $C_{2\ell}$-free graphs for every $\ell\geq 2$, which complements a result of Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte in \cite{KSV}.
Rainbow subdivisions of cliques

We show that for every integer $m \ge 2$ and large $n$, every properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices with at least $n (\log n)^{53}$ edges contains a rainbow subdivision of $K_m$. This is sharp up to a polylogarithmic factor. Our proof method exploits the connection between the mixing time of random walks and expansion in graphs.

Rainbow Turán number of clique subdivisions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 110, May 2023, 103675 • View PublicationBIB
We show that for any integer $t\geq 2$, every properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices with more than $n^{1+o(1)}$ edges contains a rainbow subdivision of $K_t$. Note that this bound on the number of edges is sharp up to the $o(1)$ error term. This is a rainbow analogue of some classical results on clique subdivisions and extends some results on rainbow Turán numbers. Our method relies on the framework introduced by Sudakov and Tomon[2020] which we adapt to find robust expanders in the coloured setting.

Negligible obstructions and Turán exponents

We show that for every rational number $r \in (1,2)$ of the form $2 - a/b$, where $a, b \in \mathbb{N}^+$ satisfy $\lfloor b/a \rfloor^3 \le a \le b / (\lfloor b/a \rfloor +1) + 1$, there exists a graph $F_r$ such that the Turán number $\operatorname{ex}(n, F_r) = Θ(n^r)$. Our result in particular generates infinitely many new Turán exponents. As a byproduct, we formulate a framework that is taking shape in recent work on the Bukh--Conlon conjecture.

Linear cycles of consecutive lengths
Published • View PublicationBIB
A well-known result of Verstraëte \cite{V00} shows that for each integer $k\geq 2$ every graph $G$ with average degree at least $8k$ contains cycles of $k$ consecutive even lengths, the shortest of which is at most twice the radius of $G$. We establish two extensions of Verstraëte's result for linear cycles in linear $r$-uniform hypergraphs. We show that for any fixed integers $r\geq 3,k\geq 2$, there exist constants $c_1=c_1(r)$ and $c_2=c_2(r,k)$, such that every linear $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with average degree $d(G)\geq c_1 k$ contains linear cycles of $k$ consecutive even lengths, the shortest of which is at most $2\lceil \frac{ \log n}{\log (d(G)/k)-c_2}\rceil$. In particular, as an immediate corollary, we retrieve the current best known upper bound on the linear Turán number of $C^r_{2k}$ with improved coefficients. Furthermore, we show that for any fixed integers $r\geq 3,k\geq 2$, there exist constants $c_3=c_3(r)$ and $c_4=c_4(r)$ such that every $n$-vertex linear $r$-uniform graph with average degree $d(G)\geq c_3k$, contains linear cycles of $k$ consecutive lengths, the shortest of which has length at most $6\lceil \frac{\log n}{\log (d(G)/k)-c_4} \rceil +6$. Both the degree condition and the shortest length among the cycles guaranteed are best possible up to a constant factor.
Extremal problems for hypergraph blowups of trees
In this paper we present a novel approach in extremal set theory which may be viewed as an asymmetric version of Katona's permutation method. We use it to find more Turán numbers of hypergraphs in the Erdős--Ko--Rado range. An $(a,b)$-path $P$ of length $2k-1$ consists of $2k-1$ sets of size $r=a+b$ as follows. Take $k$ pairwise disjoint $a$-element sets $A_0, A_2, \dots, A_{2k-2}$ and other $k$ pairwise disjoint $b$-element sets $B_1, B_3, \dots, B_{2k-1}$ and order them linearly as $A_0, B_1, A_2, B_3, A_4\dots$. Define the (hyper)edges of $P_{2k-1}(a,b)$ as the sets of the form $A_i\cup B_{i+1}$ and $B_j\cup A_{j+1}$. The members of $P$ can be represented as $r$-element intervals of the $ak+bk$ element underlying set. Our main result is about hypergraphs that are blowups of trees, and implies that for fixed $k,a,b$, as $n\to \infty$ \[ {\rm ex}_r(n,P_{2k-1}(a,b)) = (k - 1){n \choose r - 1} + o(n^{r - 1}).\] This generalizes the Erdős--Gallai theorem for graphs which is the case of $a=b=1$. We also determine the asymptotics when $a+b$ is even; the remaining cases are still open.
Tight paths in convex geometric hypergraphs
In this paper, we prove a theorem on tight paths in convex geometric hypergraphs, which is asymptotically sharp in infinitely many cases. Our geometric theorem is a common generalization of early results of Hopf and Pannwitz [12], Sutherland [19], Kupitz and Perles [16] for convex geometric graphs, as well as the classical Erdős-Gallai Theorem [6] for graphs. As a consequence, we obtain the first substantial improvement on the Turán problem for tight paths in uniform hypergraphs.

Many Turan exponents via subdivisions

Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $n$, the {\it Turán number} $\ex(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. A real number $r\in(1,2)$ is called a {\it Turán exponent} if there exists a bipartite graph $H$ such that $\ex(n,H)=Θ(n^r)$. A long-standing conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits states that $1+\frac{p}{q}$ is a Turán exponent for all positive integers $p$ and $q$ with $q> p$. In this paper, we build on recent developments on the conjecture to establish a large family of new Turán exponents. In particular, it follows from our main result that $1+\frac{p}{q}$ is a Turán exponent for all positive integers $p$ and $q$ with $q> p^2$.
Extremal problems for convex geometric hypergraphs and ordered hypergraphs
An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered, and a convex geometric hypergraph is a hypergraph whose vertex set is cyclically ordered. Extremal problems for ordered and convex geometric graphs have a rich history with applications to a variety of problems in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we consider analogous extremal problems for uniform hypergraphs, and determine the order of magnitude of the extremal function for various ordered and convex geometric paths and matchings. Our results generalize earlier works of Braß-Károlyi-Valtr, Capoyleas-Pach and Aronov-Dujmovič-Morin-Ooms-da Silveira. We also provide a new generalization of the Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem in the ordered setting.
Partitioning ordered hypergraphs
An {\em ordered $r$-graph} is an $r$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered. Given $2\leq k\leq r$, an ordered $r$-graph $H$ is {\em interval} $k$-{\em partite} if there exist at least $k$ disjoint intervals in the ordering such that every edge of $H$ has nonempty intersection with each of the intervals and is contained in their union. Our main result implies that for each $α> k - 1$ and $d>0$, every $n$-vertex ordered $r$-graph with $d \,n^α$ edges has for some $m\leq n$ an $m$-vertex interval $k$-partite subgraph with $Ω(d\, m^α)$ edges. This is an extension to ordered $r$-graphs of the observation by Erd\H os and Kleitman that every $r$-graph contains an $r$-partite subgraph with a constant proportion of the edges. The restriction $α> k-1$ is sharp. We also present applications of the main result to several extremal problems for ordered hypergraphs.

Turan numbers of bipartite subdivisions
Given a graph $H$, the Turán number $ex(n,H)$ is the largest number of edges in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We make progress on a recent conjecture of Conlon, Janzer, and Lee on the Turán numbers of bipartite graphs, which in turn yields further progress on a conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits. Let $s,t,k\geq 2$ be integers. Let $K_{s,t}^k$ denote the graph obtained from the complete bipartite graph $K_{s,t}$ by replacing each edge $uv$ in it with a path of length $k$ between $u$ and $v$ such that the $st$ replacing paths are internally disjoint. It follows from a general theorem of Bukh and Conlon that $ex(n,K_{s,t}^k)=Ω(n^{1+\frac{1}{k}-\frac{1}{sk}})$. Conlon, Janzer, and Lee recently conjectured that for any integers $s,t,k\geq 2$, $ex(n,K_{s,t}^k)=O(n^{1+\frac{1}{k}-\frac{1}{sk}})$. Among many other things, they settled the $k=2$ case of their conjecture. As the main result of this paper, we prove their conjecture for $k=3,4$. Our main results also yield infinitely many new so-called Turán exponents: rationals $r\in (1,2)$ for which there exists a bipartite graph $H$ with $ex(n, H)=Θ(n^r)$, adding to the lists recently obtained by Jiang, Ma, Yepremyan, by Kang, Kim, Liu, and by Conlon, Janzer, Lee. Our method builds on an extension of the Conlon-Janzer-Lee method. We also note that the extended method also gives a weaker version of the Conlon-Janzer-Lee conjecture for all $k\geq 2$.

New bounds for a hypergraph Bipartite Turán problem
Let $t$ be an integer such that $t\geq 2$. Let $K_{2,t}^{(3)}$ denote the triple system consisting of the $2t$ triples $\{a,x_i,y_i\}$, $\{b,x_i,y_i\}$ for $1 \le i \le t$, where the elements $a, b, x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_t,$ $y_1, y_2, \ldots, y_t$ are all distinct. Let $ex(n,K_{2,t}^{(3)})$ denote the maximum size of a triple system on $n$ elements that does not contain $K_{2,t}^{(3)}$. This function was studied by Mubayi and Verstraëte, where the special case $t=2$ was a problem of Erdős that was studied by various authors. Mubayi and Verstraëte proved that $ex(n,K_{2,t}^{(3)})<t^4\binom{n}{2}$ and that for infinitely many $n$, $ex(n,K_{2,t}^{(3)})\geq \frac{2t-1}{3} \binom{n}{2}$. These bounds together with a standard argument show that $g(t):=\lim_{n\to \infty} ex(n,K_{2,t}^{(3)})/\binom{n}{2}$ exists and that \[\frac{2t-1}{3}\leq g(t)\leq t^4.\] Addressing the question of Mubayi and Verstraëte on the growth rate of $g(t)$, we prove that as $t \to \infty$, \[g(t) = Θ(t^{1+o(1)}).\]
