Complementary Families of the Fibonacci-Lucas Relations
In this paper we present two families of Fibonacci-Lucas identities, with the Sury's identity being the best known representative of one of the families. While these results can be proved by means of the basic identity relating Fibonacci and Lucas sequences we also provide a bijective proof. Both families are then treated by generating functions.

A graph theoretic encoding of Lucas sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Some well-known results of Prodinger and Tichy are that the number of independent sets in the $n$-vertex path graph is $F_{n+2}$, and that the number of independent sets in the $n$-vertex cycle graph is $L_n$. We generalize these results by introducing new classes of graphs whose independent set structures encode the Lucas sequences of both the first and second kind. We then use this class of graphs to provide new combinatorial interpretations of the terms of Dickson polynomials of the first and second kind.

Generalized Fibonacci and Lucas cubes arising from powers of paths and cycles
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 339, Issue 1, 6 January 2016, Pages 270-282, ISSN 0012-365X • View PublicationBIB
The paper deals with some generalizations of Fibonacci and Lucas sequences, arising from powers of paths and cycles, respectively. In the first part of the work we provide a formula for the number of edges of the Hasse diagram of the independent sets of the h-th power of a path ordered by inclusion. For h=1 such a diagram is called a Fibonacci cube, and for h>1 we obtain a generalization of the Fibonacci cube. Consequently, we derive a generalized notion of Fibonacci sequence, called h-Fibonacci sequence. Then, we show that the number of edges of a generalized Fibonacci cube is obtained by convolution of an h-Fibonacci sequence with itself. In the second part we consider the case of cycles. We evaluate the number of edges of the Hasse diagram of the independent sets of the hth power of a cycle ordered by inclusion. For h=1 such a diagram is called Lucas cube, and for h>1 we obtain a generalization of the Lucas cube. We derive then a generalized version of the Lucas sequence, called h-Lucas sequence. Finally, we show that the number of edges of a generalized Lucas cube is obtained by an appropriate convolution of an h-Fibonacci sequence with an h-Lucas sequence.

Solution of Certain Pell Equations

Let $a,b,c $ be any positive integers such that $c\mid ab$ and $d_i^\pm$ is a square free positive integer of the form $d_i^\pm=a^{2k} b^{2l}\pm i c^m$ where $k,l \geq m$ and $i=1,2.$ The main focus of this paper to find the fundamental solution of the equation $ x^2-d_i^\pm y^2=1$ with the help of the continued fraction of $\sqrt{d_i^\pm}.$ We also obtain all the positive solutions of the equations $ x^2-d_i^\pm y^2=\pm 1$ and $ x^2-d_i^\pm y^2=\pm 4$ by means of the Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Furthermore, in this work, we derive some algebraic relations on the Pell form $ F_{d_i^\pm}(x, y) = x^2-d_i^\pm y^2 $ including cycle, proper cycle, reduction and proper automorphism of it. We also determine the integer solutions of the Pell equation $ F_{Δ_{d_i^\pm}} (x, y) = 1 $ in terms of $d_i^\pm. We generalized all the results of the papers [2], [9], [26], and [37].

New properties for a composition of some generating functions for primes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider properties of coefficients of a generating functions composition, where the outer function is a logarithmic generating function and the inner function is an ordinary generating function with integer coefficients. Using notions of composita and composition of generating functions, we get new properties for this composition. The properties can be used for distinguishing prime numbers from composite numbers. As an application, obtained results can be used to obtain new primality criteria. We obtain primality criteria for the Mersenne numbers, the Lucas numbers, the Pell-Lucas numbers, the Jacobsthal-Lucas numbers, and the Lucas sequences. Keywords: generating function, composition of generating function, composita, primality criterion.

The Newman phenomenon and Lucas sequence
This article gives an alternative proof of the fact that N_{Q(zeta)/Q}(1-zeta)=p where p is an odd prime number and zeta is a primitive p-th root of unity, and uses it to prove that N_{Q(zeta)/Q}(1+zeta-zeta^2)=L(p) the p-th Lucas number. It shows a relation between this result and a generalisation of the Newman phenomenon.

Some conjectures on congruences
Let $p$ be an odd prime. In the paper we collect the author's various conjectures on congruences modulo $p$ or $p^2$, which are concerned with sums of binomial coefficients, Lucas sequences, power residues and special binary quadratic forms.

Proof of three conjectures on congruences
Published in Sci. China Math. 57(2014), 2091-2102 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove three conjectures on congruences involving central binomial coefficients or Lucas sequences. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $a$ be a positive integer. We show that if $p\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ or $a>1$ then $$ \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor\frac34p^a\rfloor}\binom{-1/2}k\equiv\left(\frac{2}{p^a}\right)\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $(-)$ denotes the Jacobi symbol. This confirms a conjecture of the second author. We also confirm a conjecture of R. Tauraso by showing that $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1}\frac{L_k}{k^2}\equiv0\pmod{p}\quad {\rm provided}\ \ p>5,$$ where the Lucas numbers $L_0,L_1,L_2,\ldots$ are defined by $L_0=2,\ L_1=1$ and $L_{n+1}=L_n+L_{n-1}\ (n=1,2,3,\ldots)$. Our third theorem states that if $p\not=5$ then we can determine $F_{p^a-(\frac{p^a}5)}$ mod $p^3$ in the following way: $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}(-1)^k\binom{2k}k\equiv\left(\frac{p^a}5\right)\left(1-2F_{p^a-(\frac{p^a}5)}\right)\ \pmod{p^3},$$ which appeared as a conjecture in a paper of Sun and Tauraso in 2010.

On harmonic numbers and Lucas sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Harmonic numbers $H_k=\sum_{0<j\le k}1/j (k=0,1,2,...)$ arise naturally in many fields of mathematics. In this paper we initiate the study of congruences involving both harmonic numbers and Lucas sequences. One of our three theorems is as follows: Let u_0=0, u_1=1, and u_{n+1}=u_n-4u_{n-1} for n=1,2,3,.... Then, for any prime p>5 we have $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}u_{k+δ}H_k/2^k=0 (mod p),$$ where $δ=0$ if p=1,2,4,8 (mod 15), and $δ=1$ otherwise.

Congruences involving binomial coefficients and Lucas sequences
In this paper we obtain some congruences involving central binomial coefficients and Lucas sequences. For example, we show that if p>5 is a prime then $\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_k*binom(2k,k)/12^k$ is congruent to 0,1,-1 modulo p according as p=1,4 (mod 5), p=13,17 (mod 30), and p=7,23 (mod 30) respectively, where {F_n} is the Fibonacci sequence. We also raise several conjectures.

Combinatorial interpretations of binomial coefficient analogues related to Lucas sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let s and t be variables. Define polynomials {n} in s, t by {0}=0, {1}=1, and {n}=s{n-1}+t{n-2} for n >= 2. If s, t are integers then the corresponding sequence of integers is called a Lucas sequence. Define an analogue of the binomial coefficients by C{n,k}={n}!/({k}!{n-k}!) where {n}!={1}{2}...{n}. It is easy to see that C{n,k} is a polynomial in s and t. The purpose of this note is to give two combinatorial interpretations for this polynomial in terms of statistics on integer partitions inside a k by n-k rectangle. When s=t=1 we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the fibonomial coefficients which are simpler than any that have previously appeared in the literature.

Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $a,m$ be integers with $a>0$ and $m \not\equiv0\pmod p$. In this paper we determine $\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\binom{2k}{k+d}/m^k$ mod $p^2$ for $d=0,1$; for example, $$\sum_{k=0}^{p^a-1}\frac{\binom{2k}k}{m^k}\equiv\left(\frac{m^2-4m}{p^a}\right)+\left(\frac{m^2-4m}{p^{a-1}}\right)u_{p-(\frac{m^2-4m}{p})}\pmod{p^2},$$ where $(-)$ is the Jacobi symbol, and $\{u_n\}_{n\geqslant0}$ is the Lucas sequence given by $u_0=0$, $u_1=1$ and $u_{n+1}=(m-2)u_n-u_{n-1}$ for $n=1,2,3,\ldots$. As an application, we determine $\sum_{0<k<p^a,\, k\equiv r\pmod{p-1}}C_k$ modulo $p^2$ for any integer $r$, where $C_k$ denotes the Catalan number $\binom{2k}k/(k+1)$. We also pose some related conjectures.

$n$-Colour self-inverse compositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
MacMahon's definition of self-inverse composition is extended to $n$-colour self-inverse composition. This introduces four new sequences which satisfy the same recurrence relation with different initial conditions like the famous Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. For these new sequences explicit formulas, recurrence relations, generating functions and a summation formula are obtained. Two new binomial identities with combinatorial meaning are also given.

Polymatrix and generalized polynacci numbers
We consider $m$-th order linear recurrences that can be thought of as generalizations of the Lucas sequence. We exploit some interplay with matrices that again can be considered generalizations of the Fibonacci matrix. We introduce the definition of reflected sequence and inverted sequence and we establish some relationship between the coefficients of the Cayley-Hamilton equation for these matrices and the introduced sequences.

Identities for Tribonacci-related sequences
We establish some identities relating two sequences that are, as explained, related to the Tribonacci sequence. One of these sequences bears the same resemblance to the Tribonacci sequence as the Lucas sequence does to the Fibonacci sequence. Defining a matrix that we call Tribomatrix, which extends the Fibonacci matrix, we see that the other sequence is related to the sum of the determinants of the 2nd order principal minors of this matrix.

Generating Functions, Weighted and Non-Weighted Sums for Powers of Second-Order Recurrence Sequences
In this paper we find closed form for the generating function of powers of any non-degenerate second-order recurrence sequence, completing a study begun by Carlitz and Riordan in 1962. Moreover, we generalize a theorem of Horadam on partial sums involving such sequences. Also, we find closed forms for weighted (by binomial coefficients) partial sums of powers of any non-degenerate second-order recurrence sequences. As corollaries we give some known and seemingly unknown identities and derive some very interesting congruence relations involving Fibonacci and Lucas sequences.
