Pattern avoidance in forests of binary shrubs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 18 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2015, Permutation Patterns (July 21, 2016) dmtcs:1322 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate pattern avoidance in permutations satisfying some additional restrictions. These are naturally considered in terms of avoiding patterns in linear extensions of certain forest-like partially ordered sets, which we call binary shrub forests. In this context, we enumerate forests avoiding patterns of length three. In four of the five non-equivalent cases, we present explicit enumerations by exhibiting bijections with certain lattice paths bounded above by the line $y=\ell x$, for some $\ell\in\mathbb{Q}^+$, one of these being the celebrated Duchon's club paths with $\ell=2/3$. In the remaining case, we use the machinery of analytic combinatorics to determine the minimal polynomial of its generating function, and deduce its growth rate.

Path decompositions of digraphs and their applications to Weyl algebra
We consider decompositions of digraphs into edge-disjoint paths and describe their connection with the $n$-th Weyl algebra of differential operators. This approach gives a graph-theoretic combinatorial view of the normal ordering problem and helps to study skew-symmetric polynomials on certain subspaces of Weyl algebra. For instance, path decompositions can be used to study minimal polynomial identities on Weyl algebra, similar as Eulerian tours applicable for Amitsur--Levitzki theorem. We introduce the $G$-Stirling functions which enumerate decompositions by sources (and sinks) of paths.

A classification of all 1-Salem graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
One way to study certain classes of polynomials is by considering examples that are attached to combinatorial objects. Any graph $G$ has an associated reciprocal polynomial $R_G$, and with two particular classes of reciprocal polynomials in mind one can ask the questions: (a) when is $R_G$ a product of cyclotomic polynomials (giving the cyclotomic graphs)? (b) when does $R_G$ have the minimal polynomial of a Salem number as its only non-cyclotomic factor (the non-trival Salem graphs)? Cyclotomic graphs were classified by Smith in 1970. Salem graphs are `spectrally close' to being cyclotomic, in that nearly all their eigenvalues are in the critical interval [-2,2]. On the other hand Salem graphs do not need to be `combinatorially close' to being cyclotomic: the largest cyclotomic induced subgraph might be comparatively tiny. We define an $m$-Salem graph to be a connected Salem graph $G$ for which $m$ is minimal such that there exists an induced cyclotomic subgraph of $G$ that has $m$ fewer vertices than $G$. The 1-Salem subgraphs are both spectrally close and combinatorially close to being cyclotomic. Moreover, every Salem graph contains a 1-Salem graph as an induced subgraph, so these 1-Salem graphs provide some necessary substructure of all Salem graphs. The main result of this paper is a complete combinatorial description of all 1-Salem graphs: there are 26 infinite families and 383 sporadic examples.

On Binary Cyclic Codes with Five Nonzero Weights
Let $q=2^n$, $0\leq k\leq n-1$, $n/\gcd(n,k)$ be odd and $k\neq n/3, 2n/3$. In this paper the value distribution of following exponential sums \[\sum\limits_{x\in \bF_q}(-1)^{\mathrm{Tr}_1^n(αx^{2^{2k}+1}+βx^{2^k+1}+\ga x)}\quad(α,β,\ga\in \bF_{q})\] is determined. As an application, the weight distribution of the binary cyclic code $\cC$, with parity-check polynomial $h_1(x)h_2(x)h_3(x)$ where $h_1(x)$, $h_2(x)$ and $h_3(x)$ are the minimal polynomials of $π^{-1}$, $π^{-(2^k+1)}$ and $π^{-(2^{2k}+1)}$ respectively for a primitive element $π$ of $\bF_q$, is also determined.

Let $q=p^n$ with $p$ be an odd prime. Let $0\leq k\leq n-1$ and $k\neq n/2$. In this paper we determine the value distribution of following exponential(character) sums \[\sum\limits_{x\in \bF_q}ζ_p^{\Tra_1^n(αx^{p^{3k}+1}+βx^{p^k+1})}\quad(α\in \bF_{p^m},β\in \bF_{q})\] and \[\sum\limits_{x\in \bF_q}ζ_p^{\Tra_1^n(αx^{p^{3k}+1}+βx^{p^k+1}+\ga x)}\quad(α\in \bF_{p^m},β,\ga\in \bF_{q})\] where $\Tra_1^n: \bF_q\ra \bF_p$ and $\Tra_1^m: \bF_{p^m}\ra\bF_p$ are the canonical trace mappings and $ζ_p=e^{\frac{2πi}{p}}$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity. Discrete excursions
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 57 (2008) 23 pp • Search Publication
It is well-known that the length generating function E(t) of Dyck paths (excursions with steps +1 and -1) satisfies 1-E+t^2E^2=0. The generating function E^(k)(t) of Dyck paths of height at most k is E^(k)=F_k/F_{k+1}, where the F_k are polynomials in t given by F_0=F_1=1 and F_{k+1}= F_k-t^2F_{k-1}. This means that the generating function of these polynomials is \sum_{k\ge 0} F_k z^k= 1/(1-z+t^2z^2). We note that the denominator of this fraction is the minimal polynomial of the algebraic series E(t). This pattern persists for walks with more general steps. For any finite set of steps S, the generating function E^(k)(t) of excursions (generalized Dyck paths) taking their steps in S and of height at most k is the ratio F_k/F_{k+1} of two polynomials. These polynomials satisfy a linear recurrence relation with coefficients in Q[t]. Their (rational) generating function can be written \sum_{k\ge 0} F_k z^k= N(t,z)/D(t,z). The excursion generating function E(t) is algebraic and satisfies D(t,E(t))=0 (while N(t,E(t))\not = 0). If max S=a and min S=b, the polynomials D(t,z) and N(t,z) can be taken to be respectively of degree d_{a,b}=binomial(a+b,a) and d_{a,b}-a-b in z. These degrees are in general optimal: for instance, when S={a,-b} with a and b coprime, D(t,z) is irreducible, and is thus the minimal polynomial of the excursion generating function E(t). The proofs of these results involve a slightly unusual mixture of combinatorial and algebraic tools, among which the kernel method (which solves certain functional equations), symmetric functions, and a pinch of Galois theory.

Minimal Polynomials for the Coordinates of the Harborth Graph
The Harborth graph is the smallest known example of a 4-regular planar unit-distance graph. In this paper we give an analytical description of the coordinates of its vertices for a particular embedding in the Euclidean plane. More precisely, we show, how to calculate the minimal polynomials of the coordinates of its vertices (with the help of a computer algebra system), and list those. Furthermore some algebraic properties of these polynomials, and consequences to the structure of the Harborth graph are determined.

List Decoding of Reed-Solomon Codes from a Groebner Basis Perspective
Published • View PublicationBIB
The interpolation step of Guruswami and Sudan's list decoding of Reed-Solomon codes poses the problem of finding the minimal polynomial of an ideal with respect to a certain monomial order. An efficient algorithm that solves the problem is presented based on the theory of Groebner bases of modules. In a special case, this algorithm reduces to a simple Berlekamp-Massey-like decoding algorithm.

Quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation, generalized Razumov-Stroganov sum rules and extended Joseph polynomials
Published in J. Phys. A 38 (2005) L815-L822 • View PublicationBIB
We prove higher rank analogues of the Razumov--Stroganov sum rule for the groundstate of the O(1) loop model on a semi-infinite cylinder: we show that a weighted sum of components of the groundstate of the A_{k-1} IRF model yields integers that generalize the numbers of alternating sign matrices. This is done by constructing minimal polynomial solutions of the level 1 U_q(\hat{sl(k)}) quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equations, which may also be interpreted as quantum incompressible q-deformations of fractional quantum Hall effect wave functions at filling fraction nu=1/k. In addition to the generalized Razumov--Stroganov point q=-e^{i pi/k+1}, another combinatorially interesting point is reached in the rational limit q -> -1, where we identify the solution with extended Joseph polynomials associated to the geometry of upper triangular matrices with vanishing k-th power.
