A further study on the mass formula for linear codes with prescribed hull dimension
Finding a mass formula for a given class of linear codes is a fundamental problem in combinatorics and coding theory. In this paper, we consider the action of the unitary (resp. symplectic) group on the set of all Hermitian (resp. symplectic) linear complementary dual (LCD) codes, prove that all Hermitian (resp. symplectic) LCD codes are on a unique orbit under this action, and determine the formula for the size of the orbit. Based on this, we develop a general technique to obtain a closed mass formula for linear codes with prescribed Hermitian (resp. symplectic) hull dimension, and further obtain some asymptotic results.
A Construction of Asymptotically Optimal Cascaded CDC Schemes via Combinatorial Designs
A coded distributed computing (CDC) system aims to reduce the communication load in the MapReduce framework. Such a system has $K$ nodes, $N$ input files, and $Q$ Reduce functions. Each input file is mapped by $r$ nodes and each Reduce function is computed by $s$ nodes. The objective is to achieve the maximum multicast gain. There are known CDC schemes that achieve optimal communication load. In some prominent known schemes, however, $N$ and $Q$ grow too fast in terms of $K$, greatly reducing their gains in practical scenarios. To mitigate the situation, some asymptotically optimal cascaded CDC schemes with $r=s$ have been proposed by using symmetric designs. In this paper, we put forward new asymptotically optimal cascaded CDC schemes with $r=s$ by using $1$-designs. Compared with earlier schemes from symmetric designs, ours have much smaller computation loads while keeping the other relevant parameters the same. We also obtain new asymptotically optimal cascaded CDC schemes with more flexible parameters compared with previously best-performing schemes.
Sharper Asymptotically Optimal CDC Schemes via Combinatorial Designs
Coded distributed computing (CDC) was introduced to greatly reduce the communication load for MapReduce computing systems. Such a system has $K$ nodes, $N$ input files, and $Q$ Reduce functions. Each input file is mapped by $r$ nodes and each Reduce function is computed by $s$ nodes. The architecture must allow for coding techniques that achieve the maximum multicast gain. Some CDC schemes that achieve optimal communication load have been proposed before. The parameters $N$ and $Q$ in those schemes, however, grow too fast with respect to $K$ to be of great practical value. To improve the situation, researchers have come up with some asymptotically optimal cascaded CDC schemes with $s+r=K$ from symmetric designs. In this paper, we propose new asymptotically optimal cascaded CDC schemes. Akin to known schemes, ours have $r+s=K$ and make use of symmetric designs as construction tools. Unlike previous schemes, ours have much smaller communication loads, given the same set of parameters $K$, $r$, $N$, and $Q$. We also expand the construction tools to include almost difference sets. Using them, we have managed to construct a new asymptotically optimal cascaded CDC scheme.
On Binary de Bruijn Sequences from LFSRs with Arbitrary Characteristic Polynomials
Published in Des. Codes and Cryptogr. 87 (2019) 1137-1160 • View PublicationBIB
We propose a construction of de Bruijn sequences by the cycle joining method from linear feedback shift registers (LFSRs) with arbitrary characteristic polynomial $f(x)$. We study in detail the cycle structure of the set $Ω(f(x))$ that contains all sequences produced by a specific LFSR on distinct inputs and provide a fast way to find a state of each cycle. This leads to an efficient algorithm to find all conjugate pairs between any two cycles, yielding the adjacency graph. The approach is practical to generate a large class of de Bruijn sequences up to order $n \approx 20$. Many previously proposed constructions of de Bruijn sequences are shown to be special cases of our construction.

Spectral Analysis of Quasi-Cyclic Product Codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper considers a linear quasi-cyclic product code of two given quasi-cyclic codes of relatively prime lengths over finite fields. We give the spectral analysis of a quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the spectral analysis of the row- and the column-code. Moreover, we provide a new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of a given quasi-cyclic code and present a new algebraic decoding algorithm.More specifically, we prove an explicit (unreduced) basis of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code in terms of the generator matrix in reduced Gr{ö}bner basis with respect to the position-over-term order (RGB/POT) form of the l\_a-quasi-cyclic row- and the l\_b-quasi-cyclic column-code, respectively. This generalizes the work of Burton and Weldon for the generator polynomial of a cyclic product code (where l\_a =l\_b=1). Furthermore, we derive the generator matrix in Pre-RGB/POT form of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code for two special cases: (i) for l\_a=2 and l\_b=1, and (ii) if the row-code is a 1-level l\_a-quasi-cyclic code (for arbitrary l\_a) and l\_b=1.For arbitrary l\_a and l\_b, the Pre-RGB/POT form of the generator matrix of an l\_a l\_b-quasi-cyclic product code is conjectured. The spectral analysis is applied to the generator matrix of the product of an l-quasi-cyclic and a cyclic code, and we propose a new lower bound on the minimum Hamming distance of a given l-quasi-cyclic code. In addition, we develop an efficient syndrome-based decoding algorithm for l-phased burst errors with guaranteed decoding radius.

Construction of Quasi-Cyclic Product Codes
Linear quasi-cyclic product codes over finite fields are investigated. Given the generating set in the form of a reduced Gr{ö}bner basis of a quasi-cyclic component code and the generator polynomial of a second cyclic component code, an explicit expression of the basis of the generating set of the quasi-cyclic product code is given. Furthermore, the reduced Gr{ö}bner basis of a one-level quasi-cyclic product code is derived.
List Decodability at Small Radii

$A'(n,d,e)$, the smallest $\ell$ for which every binary error-correcting code of length $n$ and minimum distance $d$ is decodable with a list of size $\ell$ up to radius $e$, is determined for all $d\geq 2e-3$. As a result, $A'(n,d,e)$ is determined for all $e\leq 4$, except for 42 values of $n$.

Universal Cycles for Minimum Coverings of Pairs by Triples, with Application to 2-Radius Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new ordering, extending the notion of universal cycles of Chung {\em et al.} (1992), is proposed for the blocks of $k$-uniform set systems. Existence of minimum coverings of pairs by triples that possess such an ordering is established for all orders. Application to the construction of short 2-radius sequences is given, with some new 2-radius sequences found through computer search.
Linear Size Optimal q-ary Constant-Weight Codes and Constant-Composition Codes
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 56, no. 1, pp. 140-151, 2010 • View PublicationBIB
An optimal constant-composition or constant-weight code of weight $w$ has linear size if and only if its distance $d$ is at least $2w-1$. When $d\geq 2w$, the determination of the exact size of such a constant-composition or constant-weight code is trivial, but the case of $d=2w-1$ has been solved previously only for binary and ternary constant-composition and constant-weight codes, and for some sporadic instances. This paper provides a construction for quasicyclic optimal constant-composition and constant-weight codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ based on a new generalization of difference triangle sets. As a result, the sizes of optimal constant-composition codes and optimal constant-weight codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ are determined for all such codes of sufficiently large lengths. This solves an open problem of Etzion. The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight $w$ and distance $2w-1$ are also determined for all $w\leq 6$, except in two cases.

New Results on Two Hypercube Coloring Problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the following two hypercube coloring problems: Given $n$ and $d$, find the minimum number of colors, denoted as $χ'_{d}(n)$ (resp. $χ_{d}(n)$), needed to color the vertices of the $n$-cube such that any two vertices with Hamming distance at most $d$ (resp. exactly $d$) have different colors. These problems originally arose in the study of the scalability of optical networks. Using methods in coding theory, we show that $χ'_{4}(2^{r+1}-1)=2^{2r+1}$, $χ'_{5}(2^{r+1})=4^{r+1}$ for any odd number $r\geq3$, and give two upper bounds on $χ_{d}(n)$. The first upper bound improves on that of Kim, Du and Pardalos. The second upper bound improves on the first one for small $n$. Furthermore, we derive an inequality on $χ_{d}(n)$ and $χ'_{d}(n)$.
Intersection of two quadrics with no common hyperplane in $\mathbb{P}^{n}(\mathbb{F}_q)$}}
Let $\mathcal{Q}_1$ and $\mathcal{Q}_2$ be two arbitrary quadrics with no common hyperplane in ${\mathbb{P}}^n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We give the best upper bound for the number of points in the intersection of these two quadrics. Our result states that $| \mathcal{Q}_1\cap \mathcal{Q}_2|\le 4q^{n-2}+π_{n-3}$. This result inspires us to establish the conjecture on the number of points of an algebraic set $X\subset {\mathbb{P}}^n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ of dimension $s$ and degree $d$: $|X(\mathbb{F}_q)|\le dq^s+π_{s-1}$.

Cyclic Codes and Sequences from a Class of Dembowski-Ostrom Functions
Let $q=p^n$ with $p$ be an odd prime. Let $0\leq k\leq n-1$ and $k\neq n/2$. In this paper we determine the value distribution of following exponential(character) sums \[\sum\limits_{x\in \bF_q}ζ_p^{\Tra_1^n(αx^{p^{3k}+1}+βx^{p^k+1})}\quad(α\in \bF_{p^m},β\in \bF_{q})\] and \[\sum\limits_{x\in \bF_q}ζ_p^{\Tra_1^n(αx^{p^{3k}+1}+βx^{p^k+1}+\ga x)}\quad(α\in \bF_{p^m},β,\ga\in \bF_{q})\] where $\Tra_1^n: \bF_q\ra \bF_p$ and $\Tra_1^m: \bF_{p^m}\ra\bF_p$ are the canonical trace mappings and $ζ_p=e^{\frac{2πi}{p}}$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity. As applications: (1). We determine the weight distribution of the cyclic codes $\cC_1$ and $\cC_2$ over $\bF_{p^t}$ with parity-check polynomials $h_2(x)h_3(x)$ and $h_1(x)h_2(x)h_3(x)$ respectively where $t$ is a divisor of $d=\gcd(n,k)$, and $h_1(x)$, $h_2(x)$ and $h_3(x)$ are the minimal polynomials of $π^{-1}$, $π^{-(p^k+1)}$ and $π^{-(p^{3k}+1)}$ over $\bF_{p^t}$ respectively for a primitive element $π$ of $\bF_q$. (2). We determine the correlation distribution among a family of m-sequences.

Improved Lower Bounds for Constant GC-Content DNA Codes
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 54, no. 1, pp. 391-394, 2008 • View PublicationBIB
The design of large libraries of oligonucleotides having constant GC-content and satisfying Hamming distance constraints between oligonucleotides and their Watson-Crick complements is important in reducing hybridization errors in DNA computing, DNA microarray technologies, and molecular bar coding. Various techniques have been studied for the construction of such oligonucleotide libraries, ranging from algorithmic constructions via stochastic local search to theoretical constructions via coding theory. We introduce a new stochastic local search method which yields improvements up to more than one third of the benchmark lower bounds of Gaborit and King (2005) for n-mer oligonucleotide libraries when n <= 14. We also found several optimal libraries by computing maximum cliques on certain graphs.

The PBD-Closure of Constant-Composition Codes
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 53, No. 8, August 2007, pp. 2685-2692 • View PublicationBIB
We show an interesting PBD-closure result for the set of lengths of constant-composition codes whose distance and size meet certain conditions. A consequence of this PBD-closure result is that the size of optimal constant-composition codes can be determined for infinite families of parameter sets from just a single example of an optimal code. As an application, the size of several infinite families of optimal constant-composition codes are derived. In particular, the problem of determining the size of optimal constant-composition codes having distance four and weight three is solved for all lengths sufficiently large. This problem was previously unresolved for odd lengths, except for lengths seven and eleven.
